Some questions about the AW Browser // Communitymr brainNov 27, 2004, 1:49pm
Hi everyone.
I didn't know where to stick this kind of post, so I decided to put it here, since it looked like the most global newsgroup. This is about the AW Browser. I'm working on a program that does changes to the AW Browser settings, and there are a few things I need to know about some of them: First, in aworld.ini, I don't know the meaning of: [performance] try_directdraw mmx panning directdraw [display] depth no_warning I know that some of these, or even all of them, may be obsolete, but I can't figure out what they do exactly. I'd also like to know if it is possible to change the colors of text written on dialogs (directly written, not inside editboxes). It is possible to change the background colors in controls.ini , but I'd like to set the background to black and that is not possible if the text color remains black. [Colors] background dialog dialog_stripe Third thing, I'd like to know what the Users tab is for. Universe owners? (That's my guess) Fourth, is there a chance that toggle music\toggle sound effects will be implemented as toolbar.cfg commands in a close future? If not, how about... ever? :P I think those are the toolbar buttons I miss the most. Of course, there is also a chance that they already exist and the help files were not updated - I never know what exactly is implemented in these updates that pop up from times to times and I don't know how to set up outlook so I can see older news :P Thanks in advance to everyone who answers. - Mr Brain jermeNov 27, 2004, 2:54pm
I don't have all the answers, but I can help out a little bit...
[performance] try_directdraw -> This is probably a flag to determine wheather the browser should try to use DirectDraw, or use some other method (see below) mmx -> MMX is a processor instruction set for 3D stuff, this is probably a flag to tell the browser wheather the system is MMX capable panning -> no idea directdraw -> DirectDraw is a component of microsoft's DirectX, used for drawing shapes on the screen. [display] depth -> Display depth refers to the number of colors your moniter/video card can display. You can find this setting under the control panel, under the "Display" icon and then on the "Settings" tab. This is a dropdown box that has 16bit and 32bit color modes. no_warning -> I remember seeing some warning about my color depth, and there was a checkbox prevent this warning from appearing every time the browser starts. -J [View Quote] tony mNov 28, 2004, 12:03am
Panning reminds me of an ancient setting in version 2.1/2.2, where having it enabled caused the 3D view to "blur" slightly when turning (and strafing too?). This "panning" key is probably an ancient relic, since 3.x onward doesn't use it anymore.

Back in the last century, the DirectDraw option may have had some
performance advantage, but it was removed from the Performance dialog with 2.0 or so (1998). You could only enable it from aworld.ini anymore. The support for MMX processors thingie was probably removed with AW 3.0 & RenderWare 3.0 when rendering was moved to hardware. -- Mauz http://mauz.info kfNov 28, 2004, 10:41am
Personally, I haven't seen any of those options in the aworld.ini since
at least 2000 <g>. [View Quote] mr brainNov 28, 2004, 4:36pm
Hehe, sorry everyone... I always keep my entire AW folder (except cache)
when I format my HD, so it's been here since 1998 :P Doesn't anyone know anything about the text colors, and the other stuff? [View Quote] mauzNov 29, 2004, 12:57pm

I don't know about the text color, maybe it is not even
implemented yet? Would have to contact developers. Users tab was introduced in 3.5, it lists all users currently logged into the universe, and administrators even see the bots. It is not used here in the main universe. Would be cool though. I have wished for the sound buttons too. -- Mauz http://mauz.info |
