[556] browser 3.6 // CommunitychrispegSep 7, 2004, 4:03pm
Build 556 of the browser will become available in the next days.
Fixed is an issue which could lead to crashes if a web url would exceed a length of 255 characters. Thanks, Chris lightwaveSep 8, 2004, 4:38pm
how do i get it when i load aw it askes to upgrade but then says
there is no upgrade for this version? -Lightwave [View Quote] eepSep 8, 2004, 5:39pm
How about fixing the issue with only allowing 22-character object names. That's just lame....
[View Quote] binarybudSep 8, 2004, 6:18pm
<vent>Talk about lame..... How about learning to program so you don't sound so lame when criticizing the very people who help you. Do you know WHY there was a 22 character limit on that to begin with? I didn't think so.... but it MUST be lame cause you can't understand it.</vent>
Don't bother responding to this Eep, I'm done venting now. lol [View Quote] garnetSep 8, 2004, 6:22pm
I tried to get the upgrade too but it said no upgrade available.. now I have
to say skip each time I log in. I suppose I'll have to reinstall the browser. I have a question too.. I just got the upgrade to WinZip.. it now has 2 more options when passwording files. I tried to use the new methods.. 128-Bit AES and 256-BitAES but neither were usable in AW. I had to go back to using the weakest Zip 2.0 compatible encryption. Does anyone have any idea if the stronger encryptions will be usable in the near future? Garnet [View Quote] builderzSep 8, 2004, 6:28pm
I believe JerMe or someone else brought up this issue many, many months
ago here in the newsgroups. There are no current plans from AWI to implement anything besides the standard password protected zip files as far as I can tell. Builderz [View Quote] brantSep 10, 2004, 11:15am
Well, the problem with that is that no matter how strong the encryption is,
if someone uses a brute force attack to guess the password, they can still access the file. I remember using random passwords 30+ characters long in AWTeen in 2002, but I would have to change them every month as some script kiddle discovered the password. -Brant [View Quote] strike rapierSep 10, 2004, 11:25am
With a decent encryption it would take far far too long to brute force a
password, its things like plain text / proxies / debug'd browsers that matter. - MR [View Quote] eepSep 11, 2004, 6:11pm
So why is there a limit then? 22 isn't even a common programming denomination/limit (16, 32, 64, 32276, 65535, etc).

I thought that same way, Eep, but again I have no programming knowledge,
just observations.... -- Legion Chairman of Rockford Township, Phin County, Alphaworld [View Quote] legionSep 11, 2004, 7:41pm
Now that brings up the question: Are citizen PPWs and PPs safe from attack
or are they in same situation as object passwords? Just wondering. -- Legion Chairman of Rockford Township, Phin County, Alphaworld [View Quote] bowenSep 11, 2004, 7:49pm

My guess is that it's really a 25 character limit (22 + 3 for
extension). Makes absolutely no sense and was probably just an arbitrary number. Go with 256, it makes the most logical sense... at least to me. bowenSep 11, 2004, 7:50pm

logically an op with a 253(going by what Bowen said) character name obj
would well wow oh and psst its DOT rwx... so wouldn't that mea it needs 4? or is it using it as others as well an actual file?? host.activeworlds.com/this-is-the-longest-object-name-ever-it-is-so-fucking-huge-i-have-no-idea.rwx that's huge... [View Quote] bowenSep 11, 2004, 10:14pm

I suspect that it's 21 characters and not 22 because of the . character.
Unless of course they do some weird parsing and string concatination. I have no idea what they do, probably something illogical. legionSep 16, 2004, 12:09am

piece of software for AW... Legion, do you not have anything better to do? You seem to be making a great many many posts, most of them trash. - Mark R |
