c p, shut up please. this time of year is focused around christmas, if you
are christian or not. it's just been commercialized so much that it becomes
"holidays" as to not offend anyone by the mention of a christian tradition.
(*gasp* we wouldn't want that!!!) anyway that's not the point. basically
make AlphaWorld festive this december.

Such lovely people inhabit the world these days. If someone tries to do
something nice and display sensitivity and caring for others, then they are told
to shut up. Lovely world we live in.

Telling someone to renounce their christian standpoint is caring for others?
C P just told me that it's wrongful for me to say Christmas specifically. I
told him to shut up because he told me to shut up about my faith. And
anyway, nobody is fooling anyone here, the "holiday spirit" that everyone
talks about IS christmas. That's what just about everyone is preparing for.
It's really too bad how a lot of people are like these days. They want all
the presents, and the fluff of christmas, but they don't want Christ. It is
okay if you are non-christian to say "holiday spirit", but it is wrongful to
tell someone to renounce their christian beliefs (I.E. saying "merry
christmas) simply because there are people who exist in the world who aren't
christian.

He was just trying to include others, as well as christians. Why should only
christians be included and not others in well wishes? And noone is trying to
'convert' you... it won't convert you or force you to 'renounce' your religion
just to say a kind word or to to someone of another faith as well as your own.
Smile...it's about xmas and peace and love in the world for *everyone*.

Nobody was being excluded when I said "christmas". If you are another
religion, proudly state whatever you like to celebrate at this time. Since
I am catholic, I will say "christmas". It isn't my duty to list every
religion in the book simply because I don't want to offend anyone. And
please say Christmas, not xmas. And where are you quoting "convert" from? I
never said that.

Christmas is such a generalized term these days that it symbolizes not only
the religious observance but the season, the time of the year. Can't we get
around the petty political correctness and just enjoy it without the
hyperbole?

Yes, it should never mean arguing about its meaning. There can be meanings
in common among Christians and secular people, or whoever cares to celebrate
it....peace and sharing, extra time with family and friends, r/l or virtual.
I imagine everyone can come together for those elements of Christmas. Then
we can share our personal beliefs or celebrations with like-minded people.

You mean like this?

The Christmas in AW NG Song

(Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) with apologies to Mel Torme and Robert
Wells

Our chestnuts (of wisdom) roasted on a funeral pyre.
Jackasses ripping at our prose
Mules like Carol never seeming to tire
Stating all their personal yes and no's.
Everybody knows a turkey who has got to go.
He helps to make our nerves so tight.
Tiny tots with keyboards all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that back lash is on its way,

It'll bring us lots of rants that they'll convey.
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To catch someone's lying the AW way.
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from 1 to 92
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you.

Sorry that wasn't meant to be negative, but in a community you cant say we,
and mean solely Christian standpoints, it is so commercialized (fat dude
breaks into houses) but still you must at least acknowledge the others, and
in a community where everyone has their own beliefs decorating the world
with Christmas only things would be horrid, and a little biggotist.

im not biased, but just acknowledge existence and don't try to justify your
meanings by knocking others.

its be great if awi decorated, snow, wreathes trees Santa's, stars of David,
nativities, menorahs, and all things would be gladfully accepted in
spreading joy in such a pitiful time. but the way you said it you came off
as "Christians celebrate Christmas and everyone else does too" is what you
came off like.

but enough about that.

decorate away awi, I look forward to it

I am not obligated to mention any other religion. I am Christian, I will
celebrate christmas. It is up to the people of other religions to express
their needs. It is not horrid nor is it boggotist to decorate a world for
Christmas. If other religions are so offended by Christmas, then they can
leave. But, I don't think we will be having that problem.

Why tiptoe around afraid that someone will be offended? People are too
concerned about offending others these days. That's one of the reasons all
the conversations in AWGate have been debased to nothing but prating.

It has nothing to do with being afraid of offending people. It is simply
"Respect". Respect is when one is conscientious of others' needs or beliefs.
True some people feel that Respect needs to be earned. However, most
Christians I think will agree that Respect has a LOT to do with the Golden
Rule. Treat others and you would like them to treat you. And that goes
beyond whatever denomination or religion other people practice. True, if
people are offended with any religious insinuations, they can leave a
particular place and go elsewhere; however, the true main reason we
Christians celebrate that particular holiday is to celebrate the birth of
Jesus (who was a Jew) and to share peace and goodwill among all nations.
Remember that please when someone gets offended that there are no menorrahs
available in the OY's. The people who follow the Bahai religion for example
don't believe in using Christmas trees, or Santas or any of the decorations
we commonly use for the holidays. Neither do the Buddhists. It would be nice
if we had a few decorations from each of the major religions celebrated in
the world. That way we'd truly be sharing everyone's celebration of our
lives in this world. It would make things much more inviting to everyone,
not just a select group. ;-") (gets off my soapbox and prepares to get
flamed)

Well said and explained there Lioness!

It is true that Jesus Christ was not born on December 25th. He wasn't even
born in December. He was born in the middle of summer. So why is the birth
of Christ celebrated on December the 25?

"This difference is dates stems from the need to compromise with pagan
believes and to "convert" them. In the Winter Solstice Babylonians
celebrated the victory of their sun god. To this the Roman copy of this
Babylonian custom was called Saturnalia, the feast of the birth of Sol. It
was for centuries an abomination to Christians. The celebration was an orgy
of pagan revelry.

But the Church, instead of standing firm against paganism, began to
compromise. It wanted to "help" weak young Christians who didn't want to
give up the fun and merrymaking surrounding the winter solstice. So the
Church said, 'Go on with your fun and celebration. Only now we'll call it a
celebration of the birth of the Son of God. Instead of losing people to
paganism, we'll combine the two and gradually even win some of the pagans of
our day to profess Christianity. Let's not force men to choose between the
two.'" (Michael Schneider)

But above all as you have stated it is respect and tolerance of each others
faith or believes no matter what they are.

In whatever faith you follow and in these troubled times in the world faith
has brought bitter foes together as for example World War One in the British
and German troops met in no mans land to enjoy this time of year. Pity they
went back to killing each other after it!

But sharing the event not the faith shows tolerance and respect towards each
other.

lioness.
