Armys of flying monkeys... (Community)
Armys of flying monkeys... // CommunitythetravelerSep 1, 2003, 2:29am
(((this has been copied into community and wishlist, sorry i thought it
applied to both))) ...well maybe not flying monkeys the subject line was really just to try to make you read the post. But perhaps Armys..... I log into Activeworlds all the time and it really upsets me when I look at the world list and see these Flagg worlds that are supposed to be community projects but dont attract much attention. I think that if Activeworlds can afford to devote their resources to these projects they can afford the following: What Activeworlds would need to do: -Create 6 worlds 5 of which would be 20 coords and 20 person limit 1 of which would be 100 coords with a 30 person limit -Host all 6 or find a willing reliable host -Run a paintball bot in the largest world -Create a way to keep track of a monetary system (perhaps an X1 with a bank script?) Game Explination: The game is meant to create groups of friends in Activeworlds and further enhance the community, if the community becomes richer no doubt we will have more users. Basically its a bunch of teams (like armys) that follow the general into paintball wars against other teams battling for control of worlds with which the team leader/general may decide what to do. The rules are very much open to suggestion as this is just somthing I whipped up in my boredom. 5 worlds, an infinite number of battling teams. Game Rules: Money -A Poverty team is defined as any team who does not currently control a world and cannot afford to challenge a world controlling team -Poverty teams are the only teams that may compete for the sole purpose of monetary gains -World controlling teams may only challenge for world ownership -A team challenging for world ownership must have more money than the challenged team -A wager will be decided at the begining of each match, even matches for world control, the winning team will recieve this amount from the loser (along with the world if it is a world controlling team) Competition -The outcome of a match is only meaningful if a AWC official or AWC appointed official is present during the match -Teams will be given five minutes before each match to construct a base on their side of the field (side appointed by official) -Teams may only have 20 members including the team leader, however only 10 of these 20 may fight at any given match and the leader must always be part of the playing 10 Misc -There is no limit to the number of worlds any one team may control at once bowenSep 1, 2003, 3:24am
I tried, thrice, but each time my help kinda... floundered, then the 4th

And then Flagg left! Good god!!! Save us... Now we're stuck with Grumpy,
Sleezy, SueU, Programmo, JapaneseTaco, and that one billing chick... -Joe [View Quote] bowenSep 1, 2003, 8:29am

Thou hath called me forth by using the secret codephrase, "flying monkeys."
A common occurance in internet groups such as this is people ignoring the meat of your posts to complain about something, don't be too upset over it. Your idea seems similar to the project I am currently working on (though also a good bit different). Proxima is a game world I've been developing (and keeping a bit of a secret) for some time. The concept, currently, is that a number of teams (there are 11 distinct teams at the moment) battle for control of different properties in a world. Combat is done "paintball" style (though I am not particularly happy with that nomenclature) with intensive RPG elements. There are also significant strategy elements, created by the team-based environment with RPG-like player generated characters as well as extensive Engineer skills (including the construction and repair of simple structures, generators, manned or remote turrets, etc). Underlying all the FPS/RTS elements (ahem, for non-gamers that would be First Person Shooter/Real-Time Strategy) is a complex system of stats, vitals, and skills, as well as various inventories (one for each: items, construction materials, ammunition, keys). A full-scale worldwide economy is the lowest-level, generally most critical portion of the game. Each player has a rating with their faction, based on their accomplishments so far. When this ranking is high enough, you become capable of creating a group for better coordinating your actions (as well as receiving bonus exp). You also receive higher pay from your faction. Future versions will feature an even higher level of command ability, which allows you to assign specific missions to a player/group once your faction ranking has become very high. The game features a wide array of weapons, armor, ammunition, and psionic attacks. Explosive radius damage is fully functional, as are weapon side-effects (explosives will light you on fire should you survive the initial blast, for example). The new AW_AVATAR_STATE has been very helpful in adding falling damage, as well as drowning damage, making the environmental interaction somewhat more realistic. Controling a property gives your faction income (or expenses, as the case may be with some properties). Also, many machines that engineers can construct can convert materials (such as metal, wood, etc) directly into money, assuming someone supplies these machines with the materials they need. Some machines also produce power, which other machines (mostly gun turrets) require in order to remain functional. All objects in the world are destructable, with unique strength and material properties (you cannot damage metal with normal bullets, for example - you will need to use an Ion Slug weapon or higher to do any noticable damage). No doubt, I am missing many things in this simple description - it is becoming difficult to recall all of the features in the game at this point (example: I forgot that you can rent homes/appartments, a feature which, for some reason, has rarely been found in any of the most popular MMORPGs after Ultima Online). While most of the code is, at this point, stable and complete, the world development itself is still heavily underway. http://proxima.uni.cc/ is the official site, however it currently lacks detailed game information. I hope to fix this problem shortly. -Monkey [View Quote] baroSep 2, 2003, 5:00pm
Here's the most importat question about your game, as the gameplay sounds
very thought out. Is the world and object path as thought out as the project, or like so many high-concept projects in AW, everyone is too busy with the "important stuff" like the bot, so use horrible aw path style buildings and world design? thetravelerSep 2, 2003, 5:04pm
Very cool Id love to get involved in the development :-) Ill drop by the
world sometime Ur Pal, Trav [View Quote] joemanSep 2, 2003, 5:30pm

Ooh!Ooh! Didn't someone post awhile back an object set that they had poured
their heart and soul into (and it looked absolutely fantastic!) that was kind of militarily based? Might be something to check into. Now if only I could remember who it was or find the link.... [View Quote] tony mSep 2, 2003, 8:18pm
There are alphaworld objects present and in use in Proxima, but we have an equal amount of custom textures and models when we feel an appropriate need for them.

Oh that many persons. Wonder what are all doing then, for sure not fixing
the bugs on Megapath, updating newsletter or having tech-talks once a month, not to mention not replying on peoples requests to collect their prices they have won in some event. There are many talented persons in AW as cits, who would be glad to help for free even, but no.....
