Close the newsgroups // Community

I personally dont believe im reading this, this is the only place in the whole of Active Worlds where a large number of people can see others thoughts at any time, the newsgroup is 1 of the fundimental hearts of the community, its where we tell others of what were doing, tell people about events, and just have general chat among the entire community.
If we shut down the newsgroup we loose all this, but if you do not want these newsgroups the simple solution is to unsibscribe for them, but do not attempt to get them closed for the rest of us.

I do not think that AW users should be given the right to moderate this newsgroup, only AWI themselfs, we already have the PKs ruling almost all but 4 AW worlds, GKs in 1, TPs in another and WKs in AWNewbie and AWSchool. This is really the only place for fully expressed free speach (within reason)
While I think that moderation is a good idea, I think that it should be done by people who can be held directly responcable for bad ideas (So AWI) and id have much more faith in someone like Flagg, over some of the people who may end up moderating it.

Closing the newsgroups (even temporarily) would accomplish nothing. If people want the threads to stop, they should stop posting to them, stop reading them, and stop caring what anyone says in them. They *will* go away if everyone just leaves it alone and "fights" their "battles" in private.

I wouldn't elect them. I'd just pick em. That way you don't elect some
moron who's popular but still incompetent. Not to say that anybody in here
is stupid and incompetent, but it's happened before... :)

suggest that AWC set up a vote in order for newsgroup participants to elect
three or four fairly impartial regular users of the newsgroups to enforce
the rules that were originally set by AWC in the Community Charter.

was a failure. AWC simply does not have the time nor the manpower to keep a
regular watch on the newsgroups. Therefore, I suggest if a very small group
of trusted newsgroup members were elected to the "monitor group" and given a
strict set of guidelines that they must abide by, set by AWC, I think the
problem would be mostly solved.

Whoa whoa... Kerstin has only recently replied to threads when she's been
attacked in them. I can't speak for her record, but please, don't finger
point. If the mods want to do this, then they will. If they don't, no
problem.

I'd like a bulletin board system implemented instead of newsgroups. That
way you can edit your posts. =P

I understand that having AW staff monitor the newsgroups would definitely be better than having elected users moderating them, but I only made the suggestion because, at the time, I thought that AWI couldn't afford to devote the time and effort that it would take to pick through all these posts and to determine which ones should be removed. That's not mentioning that some people will undoubtedly start arguments claiming that a certain post shouldn't have been removed, or that some user got away with something that another user didn't, etc. That's one of the inherent problems of any kind of moderation.
As for free speech, I really don't see how the PeaceKeepers limit it. I've personally never had much of a problem with any of them. From my experience, I've only seen users getting ejected from worlds (excluding AWGate - they're pretty strict there, with fairly good reason) for harassing other users. I'd be on the front line of the battle for freedom of speech, but my interpretation of that right doesn't include much of the behavior shown in these newsgroups during the last couple of weeks.
Anyway, now that AWI is on the scene, things should cool down to a light boil again ;-)

True. Too many positions (just about anywhere :P) are still filled based on popularity rather than appropriateness. But still, if people had any complaints, they could only blame themselves (or the opposing voters, of course...) for choosing a poor moderator.
