Okay, jstu something i was talking to about with someone else today, we
were talking about wishing there was Forte VFX VR helmet support for AW,
for that true cyberspace feel ( forte's are cheap cheap VR helmets for
about $300 US), that go us onto thinking about not being able to type
while we had it on . ..theenn, i started thinking "would it be possible
for AW to take data from one of the many (tho not by any means perfect)
voice to text proggies around via SDK functions ?

thats th jist really, can the SDK take data from an external program in
that way ? Im not sure if im getting this across properly. ... but hay,
oh well , im an idea kinda person =)

I believe the answer is yes. You can trap all "audible" chat text and enter
your own. I was thinking of writing a little program that acted as a telnet
server. You could run telnet connect to this program and see all the chat
messages that are occuring near your bot in AW.

It would be possible to add a voice to text library on the front of that
though I am not sure that the technology is advanced enough to allow a
productive chat. You can record voice patterns and tie them to specific
commands but I am not sure how much further you can go. Some of the new
WinCE machines have voice recognition as an input medium but I have not
tried it.

if you had a program that took your voice, stored it as text in a file, then
sdk could open it. you simply have to use the C command to open the file in
ASCII mode. tell it to open, maybe, every 30sec, and if there is new text,
say it in aw. but that would only work in the bot, not actually
activeworlds.

Some (crappy) dictation software from MS allows you to use voice
recognition (if you can call it that) to input text into ANY Windows
application that has a text entry area. This includes AW (although when
I tried to speak a telegram, it came out like "Ah pink you knee" for "I
think you need"). Something similar would probably work from a Win32
console SDK app.

The main use for voice recognition software is that you use it to type. type
in word processors, in excel sheets and in whatever.

that means almost every software of this kind is able to input characters as
keystrokes into other applications.

since you can write a GUI bot for use to talk and listen inside aw, you can
easily have TrueVoice or ViaVoice or whatever they'calles talk through a bot
AND, of course talk in the AW browser itself.

no need for transfer using a text file.
