For those interested in protecting your PC from outside intruders....please check out this site: www.grc.com Steve Gibson has a
web page called "Shields-Up" this page will test your PC to see if you have any open ports that can be used to gain entry to your PC.... If you do have open ports there is an easy software soluton you can get from www.zonelabs.com called "ZoneAlarm". Steve Gibson recommends this for basic home users to protect themselves...... Please read-up on the Shields-Up page for an explaination of all this..... Happy Computing!!!! Leo :) ps; Run the Shields-Up test BEFORE getting Zone Alarm and then again after you've installed Zone Alarm to see the difference. jermeMar 6, 2002, 12:05am
Yes.. Steve Gibson is a genius! He writes all his software in assembler
(the first step above raw 1s and 0s.. the first and orignal programming language) That's why all his software has sizes in the K or KB range, and downloads quickly. Mr. Gibson has appreared on TechTV several times, and deffinitly knows his stuff. I'd recomend reading his whole site, suscribing to his newsletter (http://grc.com/mail.htm), and useing a few of his software tools. I'd also especially recomend you read his two reports on several Denial of Service attacks GRC.com was hit with. http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm http://grc.com/dos/drdos.htm Enjoy.. I hope you learn something ;-) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jeremy Booker JTech Web Systems (www.JTechWebSystems.com -- Coming Soon) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [View Quote] baronMar 6, 2002, 7:42am
If anyone is interested in security grc.com might be a start (actually I'd recommend http://nsa1.www.conxion.com/ to start with) but the shields up test is least to say insufficient, covers only 9 ports. To me all these "security tests" are a bad idea even if they run a full nmap -v yourip because they give a false sense of security...knowledge and common sense is the way to decent security, not firewalls and online tests. Anyway if you insist on running online scans here are some more alternatives for a more exhaustive test (which still means nothing):
http://security.norton.com/ http://www.hackerwhacker.com/ http://scan.sygatetech.com/ http://www.dslreports.com/scan http://www.pcflank.com/ and the slightly different http://privacy.net/analyze/ Some firewall alternatives: Sygate: http://www.sygate.com/swat/free/default.php NIS: http://www.symantec.com/consumer_products/home-is.html Tiny: http://www.tinysoftware.com/ Outpost: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/ Look 'n' Stop: http://www.looknstop.com/En/telechargement.htm Security=study, study, study and when you are done study some more...sounds like fun eh? -Baron [View Quote] sweMar 6, 2002, 12:51pm
woohoo! no problems with my computer, this is what it said:
Attempting connection to your computer. . . Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet! Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist! One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion. Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer. All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet. thats good right? or does that indirectly mean my pc internet is abit fucked? :p i got Sygate firewall, and norton firewall, and NeoWatch (just for the
point of having them rearlly). In differnt situations some of the scanners worker for some, and some didnt for others. NeoWatch works the best though [View Quote] strike rapierMar 6, 2002, 4:29pm
