New AW object set (Community)
New AW object set // Communitynornny11Jan 8, 2002, 6:21pm
Well, at least AWC is kinda noticing our distress. But don't get me wrong
*takes out hammer*...if AWC think they can raise objects and give us a few good quality objects *starts hammering down gfena1.rwx*...they better think differently *lays down Roadc1.rwx *. God, my house looks good. Anyways, what does everyone else think about the Alphaworld objects? To me it kinda looks like a jacked up version of The Sims (which I play almost as religiously as AW) *puts down ruga1.rwx*. I kinda like it because it gives me a good access to objects I can create FOR my sims (since object making for The Sims is kinda easier and less expensive than for AW). Which btw, if Alphaworld is trying to become more Simmish, would The Sims Online be more worthwhile to spend a subscription to (I think theirs is like 20 dollars a month minus the 75 dollars or so buying the game and 3 expansion packs with another one coming this spring, although they haven't released a price)? They'll basically have everything AWC has, just in Sim form, which I think is definately some new competition. Nornny moff piettJan 8, 2002, 6:27pm
TWENTY a month to play the ruddy sims? And people cry about aw being greedy
and a rip off.. jeeze. cozmoJan 8, 2002, 7:14pm
actually its $10 a month, like any other onlie GAME which AW sure the hell
isnt as entertaining as one. [View Quote] bowenJan 8, 2002, 7:16pm

I've just been through the whole set...I'm not impressed. If thats AW
attempt to soften the blow of their new pricing plan they failed miserably. There are objects missing or typoed on their webpages...with textures missing. It will unclear how to animate the level pieces, there are gaps and holes in the objects...the road pieces are not to scale...I'm disappointed AW...that looks like a weekends work for Gand to me...and I know he so much better than that (i.e. the 3D Homepages, JunoDome). -Gamer [View Quote] blastoJan 8, 2002, 7:35pm
The sims is nothing like ActiveWorlds. They may be getting many of their
ideas from the sims though, since it also has a lot to do with building homes (and in AW's case, office buildings and anything else you can think of!) I honestly think that $10 a month may not seem so expensive once I see AW Ver 3.3, although it will still be a bit out of my price range. Maybe ActiveWorlds will come up with some way so that I can refer others to ActiveWorlds and get credit for it. But now I'm going off-topic so I'll shush. The new objects seem rather good, they're trying to please us, hoping to get our money for 3.3, which sounds extremely good with many of our long-awaited features! :-D I think they are planning on advertising and building AW into a much larger thing. This extra $$ will help boost their stocks and allow them to hire more employees to advertise and such. Possibly, if they do good advertising, they will have enough people on AW that they can drop the price somewhat but in the beginning of AW, I don't think they were ever planning to continue $20 a year. That was just a temporary thing, like beta testers in a way... but paying beta testers :-P yes, I'm talkative today, so sue me! :-P [View Quote] birdmikeJan 8, 2002, 7:38pm
They should have expanded the scope of the objects they created. I mean, it
sure isn't any easier to create an ancient or ultra-modern building using those objects. The nearly identical pre-fab buildings are going to be everywhere, just like new subdivision houses in the US. Almost all of the objects are useful only in building houses, not businesses, museums, monuments, etc. Perhaps creating more stairs, columns, domes, etc would make more elaborate buildings possible. I was actually more excited about the object additions that added the different sizes of pp16s and triangular flooring. As for the general appropriateness of the objects, I don't think they fit in with the current object scheme. The current objects are more angular and rudimentary, while the new objects are more detailed and complex. I don't know, maybe I'm being too much of a critic, but I think putting those objects in an entirely new world would have been more appropriate. The objects would have been fitting for that world, because they don't seem fitting in AW. I will give them some credit, the new roofs and roads are nice. -BirdMike [View Quote] blastoJan 8, 2002, 7:45pm
You just gave me an idea. What AWC could do to help people get more
interested is to start an entirely new world. No more AW crap, start a new world with an incredible amount of space and tons of new objects. GOOD objects, not the new crap. That would be awesome. Everyone would race for it to grab areas closer to GZ and stuff. Even them letting me know they're working on one and give us some preview shots of new objects to be added to it and all to get us fired up about it would be great. AW has just gotten so old, the majority of the objects are many years old! [View Quote] moff piettJan 8, 2002, 8:25pm
You should read the couple posts on "Awtowns". Me and goober are working on
that. Will have a totaly new basic building set as well as a few specialised set (ie gand's townhouse set, medival set, future set) that can all also fit together. Although the interesting thing about awtowns is not the new objects, but rather how the world is run. Focuses more on community building than solo building (although of couse you can still solo build). The world will have a dynamic transport system that grows and changes as towns pop up, and towns will be able to apoint reps that will have a say in how the world is run, what new objects would be added and so on. Actualy with Andras' help we would have probably had the world up in a month or so, but it's on hold for obvious reasons right now. facterJan 8, 2002, 8:49pm

AW has just gotten so > old, the majority of the objects are many years old! Those objects *were* supposed to be for a new world...I dont understand why they put them into AW at all in all honesty, not sure what they were thinking there... I was quite looking forward to a whole new world to build in, that wasnt a messy mesh of ancient objects and new objects...plus new av's, and all that. Well, thats what they were meant to be for, who knows why they didnt implement them that way :( I am a bit disappointed by this, maybe they will introduce a whole new building world really soon - they really need one...AW is a great world, but it is archaic - ie, a wonderful museum peice, but just adding all the new objects into AW that were supposed to be for a new world... too bad *sigh* F. Now that you mention, you're right, they were for a supposed new world. We
even saw like 5 screenshots of them. It was the world with the high detail avatars, that they spread across the various 3d worlds. I wonder what happened, I guess it was a desperate tactic. :) Anyways, a new world would be nice for a lot of reasons at the moment. But I can see how it can be abandoned just like every other AWC world in existence without a lot of pitching for Alphaworlders to leave Alphaworld and congregate in the new world. A crowd attracts a crowd in AW, rarely does one public building world get more builders on a normal day unless they already had 40 to begin with, unless there was a party or some other reason. It's really a game of follow the mob in AWC worlds, which is disappointing, you can't travel very excitingly. Nornny [View Quote] blastoJan 8, 2002, 11:51pm
Do you ahve a website for awtowns?
How big is the world? Does AWC have any relation to it in any way? Will you also add the basic AW building sets? This sounds really good. Get it open quick, I'm anxious! :-D [View Quote] moff piettJan 9, 2002, 12:51am
No website. Just a poorly spelt design doc that's been floating around.
How big is the world? I'll have to talk to tombone about that. Goober says we should shoot for a mars sized place. I can't officialy say anything about awc or tomy-cakes being involved at this point. NO! no basic aw build objects. Totaly new set. Actualy major Tom said he'll disown me if I use any aw objects in this project or something to that extent hehe. Although the shapes and sizes will almost exactly match, except the entire world will be on base 10, rather than a mix of 8 and 10 like AW. This is going to be a new world, not yet another re-hash of alpha world. But don't worry, it will have a very flexible basic generic path with simple walls that could fit in a castle underground factory on the planet Putget. Basicly if you want to build with aw objects there are alrdy more than enough worlds to do that in. We want to move on from that. Also may use some of the new objects added to aw, but I'd have to scale them so the curbs don't come up to one's knees, and couches arn't big enough for one to live in. Perfectly lovely objects but I'm not sure what Gand was thinking with the scale. Maybe the curbs are half a meter tall in the Toronto area hehe. Actualy I was going to speak to Thomas about awtowns but he's been sick and not in the office. Then again I don't blame awcom staff for being "sick" this week hehe. blastoJan 9, 2002, 12:58am
Something I might want to suggest is that you actually measure yourself up
to your walls in real life. Then Measure how big the wall is. Decide what fraction people normally are of walls and make sure that your avatars and walls represent that. Also that vehicles and desks and all are to scale!! I hate how AW is soo off-scale! even AWTeen is incredible off scale with their objects. The avatars are twice the size of the cars! Pay careful attention that that sort of thing, that's what makes it feel more real. The average person is about 5'7 - 5'8 so make the avatars about that fraction of a 8 or 10ft wall. And most of all, do not fail to stop adding objects. Continually add objects so that people don't get bored of the same old ones. People like new stuff! :-D Also, get someone to create a nice PHP script for all the objects and things like that so that if you search for wall, it will give you a picture of that object and then tell you what textures it comes in and the rwx for that object with that texture :) Yeh, I'm picky as hell, you'll need some heavy critics ;-) [View Quote] syntaxJan 9, 2002, 2:24am
Love the new obs! All the new furniture and stuff is great. Finally a new
toilet that I can actually fit my big Butch butt on. :-P The roads disappointed me though! They are way to big and can't replace my old roads which I want to do. :-\ -- - Syntax - http://swcity.net [View Quote] facterJan 9, 2002, 5:08am

As I said, I am a bit disappointed, but, they must have their reasons :) F. > > Anyways, a new world would be nice for a lot of reasons at the moment. I always try to keep to scale in AW, but to look "right" things tend to be
about 15% bigger than they should. As long as EVERYTHING is 15% bigger is looks fine. It's when you get some things like walls being 15% bigger, but cars being to exact scale that things start to look.. well.. like aw. About adding objects. One of the main features of the world is every month or so a vote for additional modulas of objects, and maybe yearly or bi-yearly add a pack. A modual would be like "extended modern furniture" or "additional medival roofs and walls" while a set would be "compleate sci-fy building set" or "victorian house set". All sets and moduals will be to the same scale, and all objects to the same base dimensions so everything will fit together (unlike aw and its new objects). blastoJan 9, 2002, 6:49pm

Other than Goober helping with the higher level orginisation, I have zero
actual "grunt work" help on this project. And it's on hold till aw sorts its self out more. So don't hold your breath. donnaJan 10, 2002, 10:57am

Cache or local object path maybe? The old tile5 was a
blue roof texture, the new one is grey with 4 dark grey vertical stripes. [View Quote] -- "_ | /\ \ / __/ /_ sw chrisJan 10, 2002, 4:27pm
Refresh your cache and the wood21 will show up as a different texture. I
sent support an e-mail asking if the original was accidentally overwritten. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. :) SW Chris p.s. Dont' jump to conclusions. [View Quote] blastoJan 10, 2002, 7:05pm
