Why not package AW and sell it in stores? (Community)

Besides raising the citizen prices so drastically, perhaps a better option
would be to sell AW like you sell a game. Though I am not very familiar
with Everquest, it seems to have worked well for them. If AW was marketed
in stores, it would definitely increase the user base exponetially. Most
new AW users are from referals or accidental discovery.

Though it may not be an appealling option, why not raise the price of world
licenses? I mean, it seems to me worlds would cost more than citizenships!

Just my opinions.

Or better yet, advertise on TV. Selling a CD with a 3 MB file on it isn't
very economical. If you were to do a TV Ad, you could just tell people
where to download it. :)

It seems like many years ago (1994-1996 ish) I saw a commercial about
the "3-D Internet"

in 1999 I became a cit of AW. And ever since I first saw it, I wondered
if that is what the commercial was advertising.

True. But anything would be better than relying on referals!

Heh, I just found AW by luck. It was AW or another site on a list of VRML
worlds. I think AW really needs to get the message out that they are here.
If not a full blown TV ad, maybe banner ads on other websites like Yahoo?

[View Quote] I found this place while browsing through old copies of my previous ISP's
monthly magazine (no longer published). They had a small snippet on AW and
I thought I'd take a look.

My biggest isssue with AW for many years now, I have been a member since 98,
has been its lackluster (emphasis on 'lack') approach to marketing. I have
seen small cells of reviews in like a couple of PC games magazines, sure
they had their big "boost' from Juno.
But they have not put enough resource into marketing this product. And why
not? I cannot see why ( an explanation from someone in the know would be
great).

I have with my exprerience in world building approached a couple of large
companies (Universal) with initiatives based on the AW software. They didnt
have a clue what this was. They didnt have a clue anything like this
existed, and they didnt want to have anything to do with it cause it was to
"new" of a technology to "take a chance".

"Too new"? "To take a chance?" I was a user in AW when some of the cits were
still weening off their mothers teats.

Some marketing needs to be added to this software in order for it to
survive, word of mouth, is NOT enough.

I meant to ad. Lately I had been researching the competition: Worlds 3D .com

Have you people seen this crap?? Aerosmith, David Bowie, Hanson, and other
entities have paid big bucks to these people to make worlds for them, and
the quality of Worlds.com makes the CY avatar look like Aki Ross from Final
Fantasy.

I was appaled and flabbergasted when I saw what they had to offer and then
thought, "My God, some of the worlds largest entertainers got suckered into
something vastly pathetic, when AW is ten times more capable of creating
quality products."

AW.Corp, post a listing for a Marketing rep, and I can get you some turn
around before you can blink.

Im on the internet almost daily, and I have never ever saw any form of
advertising outside AW and that web ring they got.
And I most defiantly never saw any type of 3D anything on TV sept for new
games that come out.

I've been a citizen of Active Worlds since 1995 and have only seen one
advertisement for it on television. It was on a C|Net television show on
the Sci-Fi Channel many years ago. I agree that Active Worlds could have
done a better job of advertising their product (and themselves as a
company) in the past. However, I think some of you are forgetting that
national television, radio, and print ads usually cost a lot of money
(especially television commercials). If AWC is already low on cash,
would a national TV ad really do any good? They could spend their last
dime on a TV ad, hoping to bring in some new citizens and revenue, and
have it backfire.

Include Cache's for Software mode, OpenGL and DirectX for the main AW Public
Building worlds and you have yourself a big CD.
