3.2 - the version from hell (Community)
3.2 - the version from hell // Communitysw comitSep 30, 2001, 7:33pm
I gave it a second chance...and it failed miserably, here's the problems:
1. MIDIs no good, I already been through all that. 2. Every 20-30 minutes AW would cause my computer to just stop, and reboot without me doing anything. I would just be there building or chatting away and within all of sudden, within 3 seconds, my computer is rebooting. I blame this on my graphic card. I'm probably one of the only people on AW with a white box graphic card, it's an ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 MB with the latest drivers, with the exception of the beta drivers that are out. 3. Lighting. This is just an opinion, but I don't like the lighting. White light at brightness 10 makes 1 side of my avatar completely white. 3. Masking. This is covered in help, but yes, some masking was damaged too. Particularly, the awd#m mask, which causes a transparent look to things. 4. Lag. Even after going through all the settings and trying everything out, I do end up getting more lag in 3.2. 5. Recache bug(?). Not sure how to explain it, but here's what seems to happen. I cache and download an area, then go elsewhere, and when I come back, it's all gone and I either have to recache it or restart AW. 6. Texture tags. If you texture a door object in 3.1, it would all be textured. In 3.2, the frame of the door wouldn't be textured, but is white instead. No one else has mentioned this, so I blame it on my graphic card again. Anywho, I can't use 3.2 even if I wanted too cause of problem #2 ;_; My system specs: AMD t-bird 1.4 GHZ 384 MB SDRAM ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 MB w/ TV in and out Windows 98 Audio Excel Wavetable 5.1 channel surround sound sound card using C-media software which uses "Midiout" midi drivers DirectX 8.0a Computer is also a proxy server for the network, and is on a 56k modem. sw comitSep 30, 2001, 7:38pm

System specs might be nice for Roland to have. :)

You should look at Mauz's tips. She said that it has to do with your
sound card. I don't have problems with midis on any of the four or five computers I use AW on (which have different operating systems and configurations - some at home, others on campus), so it must be hardware-specific. : : 2. Light at brightness 10 was supposed to make your avatar white. In the old version though, bright lights didn't show up much, causing people to put insane values for the brightness, such as 999999999999 (which I saw on a building I was visiting the other day). People just need to adjust the values - that's all. : : 3. Masking. This is covered in help, but yes, some masking was damaged : too. I'm guessing "Midiout midi drivers" isn't what it implies (i.e. routing to
the MIDI Out port for other MIDI devices) and I assume that MIDIs played directly through WMP are perfectly ok? Grims [View Quote] > Audio Excel Wavetable 5.1 channel surround sound sound card using C-media > software which uses "Midiout" midi drivers sw comitOct 1, 2001, 1:29am
I got 10 choices for midi devices. Half use directmusic drivers, the other
uses midiout drivers. They all sound exactly the same except one...Microsoft Synthesizer which is on directmusic - that sounds like 3.1. I'm pretty sure that AW 3.2 uses C-Media MIDI synthesizer. Not sure which one, there's 2 of them, one is on directmusic, the other is on midiout. *boggle* too much for me, it's not relevant anyway until #2 is fixed. And no, WMP plays midis bad too. Only winamp has given me the choice to use Microsoft Synthesizer. [View Quote] just inOct 1, 2001, 2:46am
I have a PII 300 64MB RAM, Video Card ATI Rage Fury Pro
For no apparent reason, system locks up and I have to hard reboot or only AW will get a page fault. I tried a Dr Watson thing with the page fault and it said no memory. If I restart AW after an AW crash the crashes continue with regularity, even in other programs until I get the full system lockup. Timing is more like I can be going several hours, then AW crashes, and crashes on a restart within a few minutes, again and again, then system lockup. These problems began after testing the Open GL and Software rendering, both of which preformed far worse that Direct 3D. I tested these out on the second day. On the first day I did not have any crashes of any kind. Which has made me think the tests brought on the errors. No noticeable lag or frame rate change, things are generally brighter, objects with no texture mapping ignore the texture totally, I haven't seen any masking problems, and midis play same as always. Wow someone else with a ATi Rage Fury eh? I'm only assuming hardly anyone
has one because I use a program called www.pcpitstop.com (found in my Optishmizer shop in the general discussion group post) and they test tens of thousands of computers, but only 4 people had an ATI Rage Fury Pro. [View Quote] xanlarOct 1, 2001, 8:58am
Hmmm......Isn't that why 3.2 is BETA? Just wondering if you saw that or not.
I think it's not as good cuz it came out too early. kahOct 1, 2001, 9:16am
are you stupid? 3.2 *ISN'T* beta anymore!! that's why everyone complains,
because it should still be in beta! (or possibly even alpha, it's really so unfinished) KAH [View Quote] mauzOct 1, 2001, 3:42pm

AW is directing MIDIs to Windows Media Player, so if they don't
sound good in WMP, they won't sound good in AW either. I think soundcards can use MS software synthesizer with a WDM driver (instead of VxD), but I only have W95 so I can't test it. Luckily I don't need software emulation though, since I can load big hardware sound font banks into my SoundBlaster Live. > 2. Every 20-30 minutes AW would cause my computer to just stop, and reboot Make sure your processor or graphics card isn't overheating (does the card have a cooling fan?) and that the power supply gives at least 250 watts. > 3. Lighting. This is just an opinion, but I don't like the lighting. > White light at brightness 10 makes 1 side of my avatar completely white. I think it's nice that you don't have to use big brightness values anymore to get a decently lit area. BUT the hardware lights in Direct3D and OpenGL can now override the color of the object, forcing the colors of non-textures polygons to the color of the light, almost like specular lighting - pretty unrealistic. Roland doesn't like it either, so it is not just your opinion. Maybe it will change (once again...) in some future version of RenderWare. The software lights work more like the 3.1 lights, not changing the objects color. > 5. Recache bug(?) Did you delete cache for 3.2? I got something like this even with earlier versions if I tried to go somewhere but couldn't get there ("Looking for.."), like when uniserver was down, and then teleported back. It could even mess up the avatar lists between the two worlds. > 6. Texture tags. If you texture a door object in 3.1, it would all be Do you mean like the white rims in the pw/pd wall series? That is an old problem with models that have vertices without texturemapping information, but that people use texture commands on anyhow. Putting a texture on such models produces "inconsistent results" in RenderWare, meaning, they look different in every version of AW. Some such models that I noticed besides those doors were chess piece set, drinkf1, firehy1, mailbox1 top, rail1t00, tvstnd base. The only way to fix it once and for all would be to add specific UV values in the rwx file. If there is a certain model that you want looking the same as in 3.1, there is now a randomuvs RWX command. -- Mauz http://mauz.tnlc.com/ sw chrisOct 1, 2001, 4:39pm

See, that's another issue: because software lights take over after the initial 7 hardware lights, and because hardware lights have different intensities/radii than software, there will be NO consistency in getting lights to work correctly for both hardware AND software! So what is the point of having multiple lights then if they're just going to get screwed up anyway? Sheesh...

I uninstalled both my old 2.2 and the second copy 3.2, then did clean ups of
all internet content and temp files and a regclean. Then a scandisk and defrag. Downloaded a fresh 3.2, installed it, threw in my telegram, contacts, and teleport back-ups. Visited 4 worlds and did a fair bit of chat over several hours. Not one error today - all runs smoothly again. (Hoping it stays that way). Regards, Justin [View Quote] xanlarOct 2, 2001, 9:04am
it really should be beta...or an earlier testing stage...this had to be
rushed out, i was made to believe that if 3.2 came out at the right time it would have shadowing for the light command, which i figured would be pretty kool. the only thing ifind useful is the cell grid XanLar sweOct 2, 2001, 2:38pm
I'm having the same problems mentioned in #2,the first #3 and #5 not sure
bout the rest, and don't get any lag(#4). must be something to do with ATI graphic cards :) SWE [View Quote] duskbatOct 2, 2001, 11:48pm
About the problem you had in your section 5. I think the 3.2 restarts your
settings to default I fix it by changing my options, settings, disk usage then set to no limit. restart. Hope it works for you also. Now I can return to a place and it will still be there. I think my computer is overheating. If I just leave it in BIOS for a long
time, it levels off at 138º F - and obviously the temperature would go up with the CPU load is higher, like when AW is running. I already have 4 fans in this thing, I'm shopping for another fan right now... [View Quote] rpg helperOct 10, 2001, 5:44am
I have what Just In has almost.
But i didn't install the new 3.2 at the advice of my friend JFK2. And since he can't post here he has asked me to send all of you this message. If any of you want to return to the more stable version of 3.1 you can obtain all the info for downloading and installing the old 3.1 at my friend's path server.
