wrong, bucko! the Client-side version of the Contact List is in contacts.txt
in the directory where aworld.exe resides. If you ever open it, you'll
discover a bunch of numbers. citizen numbers. how do you think you get the
status and name updates, heh? your contact list updates every 30 second or
minute (can't remember), by querying the citnums name and status to the
uniserver. if you'd have 500 names on your CL, and everybody had the same,
and you now have like 300 users online in average, then guess how many
queryings that would be. 300000 every minute/half-minute/whatever. now
you'll be asking where I learnt to count, cuzz 500 x 300 = 150000, right?
well, the citname and status queries are separate, so that would be quite a
big ammount of stress being sent to the server, heh? and as the amount of
users online at all times grow, at the end of the day, your server will say
"this world is evil! buh-bye shitplace!" and collapse... just think of it,
heh...
KAH
PS. don't forget the other queries that are being sent all the time,
either...

GKs and PKs can use the tool created by I can't remember who that allows you
to rotate contact lists (you can do this by hand as well).

I think we should have an option to set where we want URL's to be opened.
When I click on a URL or link in activeworlds I dont really like the way
that it takes up halve of my screen.
I would much rather see it open in my internet explorer window or have the
option to set where my browser is located.
Would be nice to have the choice of using the internal browser or an
external one.
Many thanks

one bot = one avatar. so if they only logged in 1, you wouldn't get the bird
group effect and the bird would be just boring. I think you can buy bot
limit extensions from the AWC, and for special events you can kindly ask

grant it too).

no, but with most *decent* engines 3 axis rotation is a standard function,
so you just ascociate the key with that function... heck, Roland could just

there's a simple mode for ppl that shouldn't be using the software anyway in
3.2... if they don't know how to switch rendering mode they're in trouble
because then they truly won't be able to change any of the other settings
either... oh, and there are help files that anyone can read...
KAH
PS. what about the ppl upgrading from 2.2 that wonder why it doesn't work,
which would mean the AWC would get like hundreds of mails every day "hey,
everything is white, some object won't load, AW is broken, fix it!"...

please do note that these newsgroups are not affiliated with the forums on
AWNews.com and polygon.imatowns.com. yes, in some way ppl could do that, but
they can anyway, not harder than redirecting or putting some sort of hidden
download (dead easy with IE, you can just embed an ActiveX control and it'll
autodownload, no easyer way of getting ppl to download stuff... Do like me,
use Netscape (v 6.1 just ROCKS!), and you'll be a lot easyer than with IE
(maybe it's code for Internet Evil?)
KAH
PS. the security levels stuff in IE is BS, they don't protect in any way.

ooops, I was a bit droowsy when I wrote that, "... and you'll be a lot
easyer than..." was meant to be "...and you'll be a lot safer than...",
sorry.

they're not talking about the stupid word use on the new website... they're
talking about what you've whined about for as long as I have been in these
NGs (not all that long, but quite a while...), integrating bots, etc into
the browser itself instead of having them run as standalone applications...
I agree that the word use on the new website is very stupid, and that it
will lower technology awareness in AW.
KAH
PS. this thread was posted before the new website anyway...

it truly is with the computer industry. Plugins are for web browsers that
load INSIDE THE BROWSER AND DO NOT LOAD AN EXTERNAL PROGRAM LIKE AW. All the
AW "plugin" is is the same old teleport script that's been used for YEARS to
automatically open AW to a specific spot. <shrug>
