Simple ChatBot

Jul 3, 2002, 11:04pm
Hi, I've been writing a little bot as an example for VB programmers, but I
think someone might possibly find it usefull, so I'm releasing a binary
version of my Simple ChatBot. Get it from http://kahnews.cjb.net/bots/ and
be sure to download the binary version. Comes with installer :-))

Hehe, you'll need quite a large one for that... According to my
calculations, if every cell in AW has got 10 bytes of data, it would
ammount to 10725625000 bytes of raw data (I might've done it wrong, can't
remember if the max coord limit is 32750 or something else)... Nearly 10GB
:-)) And taking into consideration that there's probably much more data in
AW than 10 bytes per cell, this number is (probably) smaller than the real
one. I don't get how the AW world server manages to read from such a file
without taking forever lol

Hey, I have a really quick DSL connection and it still took me something
like 10 seconds to download the post. Attachments in newsgroups is a no-
thing, one should provide a link instead (if one feels it necesary to
attach something, 50kb is the Über-giga-max size limit that's acceptable).

Lol, I have a fast DSL line already and it still took me 10 seconds to
download it because the newsserver is slow. Anyway, most of us have better
things to spend our bandwidth on than downloading bots we don't even want
(my ISP has a 1GB/month limit, if you exceed it without paying for an
increase they have fun setting you back to 64kbps for the following
month...).

Hmmm, lets recap:
HE can't call someone names, but YOU can call HIM names (much worse than he

Now that isn't very logical if you ask me. :-)) NCC, remember that you're
in a newsgroup, you're not out on the street talking face to face, and you
don't set the rules here. So if you're going to dictate everyone's
behaviour in the NGs, go set up your own server.

What settings are you using? If I remember it correctly, BuildBot uses
"raw" AW coordinates like HamFon's other bots (multiply the normal
coordinates by 1000 to get the right value), which can be confusing if
you're new to bots.

Well, not all of us programmers in here are professional, and most people
don't earn a cent on their AW bots (professionals or not).

It's not good to have newsreaders interpret it, because then it won't
motivate people to stop posting in HTML. If people can read their posts
properly, they're much more likely to start posting in plain-text. My
newsreader does not interpret or render HTML, but does recognise the MIME-
type and display a copy of the attached HTML file (that's how MS's HTML
posts are made up). It's really annoying having to read through a bunch of
HTML code though. If only OE/other MS crap-stuff interprets HTML, then less
OE users will use it, because a lot of people will flame them and ignore
them because of it. Some servers (on USENET that is) even kill all HTML
posts (a good idea in my opinion).

"Can I have what I say be put on a sign object using preston?" :-)) I think
you could do that with a dictionary entry of type Phrase (match for
something like *, dunno if Preston supports wildcards), and have it do an
Objects/Change object action, and change it's action line to something like
"%a said: '%r'".

That'd be 200m (20 coords) I think. It's not possible for a bot to query
larger areas at the moment, you'll just have to repeat the process in
different places, shouldn't take long.

New bot site open!

Nov 13, 2002, 3:31pm
Hi all avid bot users and developers!

I'd like to announce the opening of a new AW bot site, targeting both the
user and the developer, powered by a custom, dynamic content system:
http://bots.omegauniverse.com/

There you'll find bot news, bot source code, and compiled bot programs in
three categories:
- C and C++
- Visual Basic
- Misc./Pascal-Delphi

By registering as a member (it's free, fast and completely SPAM free) you
get access to even more features, like submitting your own bots. We'd
appreciate it very much if bot developers submit their bots to the site!

We're constantly working on adding new and cooler features, especially bot
developers can expect some really neat improvements soon...

So check Bowen & KAH's bot site out now:
http://bots.omegauniverse.com/
