Nothing like a little rumour and innuendo.... *smile*.... As far as I know
Shamus still works for them.... I think he just chooses to spend more time
with his wife and baby than being visible online....Nice to see someone
enjoying the FPS IRL..... It was Dale who left to do something else....

Gate Keepers

Apr 18, 2003, 5:18pm
According to the following resources there is no entry to be found for
shitake- all queries refer the searcher to shiitake.

http://www.dictionary.com
http://www.atomica.com
http://www.britannica.com/

Yes, it is often seen as shitake- because it is being misspelled. - The
pronunciation for the word is (she'e-tä'ke) The English language doesn't
have a character to represent the phonetic sound of e'e (hence the ii) .
The word is an English representation of a Japanese word deriving from the
term for mushroom (shi-oak-take)

My point is and was - don't blame the customs aide or the GKs. For heaven's
sake, use common sense. The word the system and the GKs look for is "shit" ,
flat out, and it/they boot/warn for that language. If a chatter can't spell
correctly, or can't hold a conversation fit for a g-rated area - that's the
chatter's problem, not theirs. It's the chatter's responsibility to monitor
their conversation, their spelling, their tone, their attitude, and their
conversational content and find appropriate venues for their discussions.
The GKs and the CA are there to spare the rest of the visitors from having
to listen to inappropriate conversations. The presence of CA/GKs and the
rules of the Gate are a debate long ago settled, and part of the agreement
one makes with the AW universe to participate in that world's community.

So, to address your initial issue - the GKs/CA have no quarrel with your
discussion of Asian cuisine, and you weren't warned/booted for discussing
fungi. The warning/booting came from the failure to spell the word
correctly and thereby triggering the system's awareness for any derivative
of the Anglo-Saxon term "shit".

Lucrezia (the one who made up the original list of words that the GKs/CA use
as a reference/programmed triggers)

Curiosity...

Jun 9, 2000, 8:18pm
Just my .02 for what it's not worth ;)

This "network of worlds" is what I have always hoped would come from people
being able to have their own world servers. I always kind of envisioned
that people would work to weave their worlds together thematically, and
would take advantage of the SDK to create bots (NPCs) to add ambience and
intrigue to the virtual content. Virtual Reality is the ideal resource for
storytelling online, and our community is chocked full of creative and
imaginative people - I would hope that at some point some of the minds would
get together and build an RPG or adventurous worlds......

AW3 world contest

Oct 4, 2000, 2:49am
http://www.activeworlds.com/newsletter/0800/080018.html

The contest was featured in the August Newsletter - and has just reached
completion and we'll be announcing the winner in the next few days. There
was a lot of hard work put into these worlds by many of the participants -
and there are some incredibly creative minds out there! Some of the worlds
showed some unique approaches to virtual worlds - check 'em all out for
yourselves!

We will be running another contest like this in the future, and hopefully
more and more people will participate!

Best only,

Objects d'AW

Dec 8, 2000, 1:40pm
By the way........ :)

I wanted to say thank you to everyone involved in this project. When
Wascally and I started the Objects d'Activeworlds object bank years ago this
is the kind of program that we dreamed it would grow into.

I'm thrilled to see what a harebrained idea born in the NG could grow up to
be with so many people involved and giving :)

I also want to thank Casay for taking over this project last year and giving
it so much love and attention - all the world builders out there who
withdraw from the bank all the time owe her a HUGE thank you - without her
the site would have just been another page on the 'Net.

Give generously and give often - it's good for your avatar's karma :)

What should be "R" and what should be "X"?

May 3, 2003, 3:33am
Actually there is.... it's called erotica from the Greek "erotika" deriving
from eros, meaning love. It is defined as: literary or artistic items
having an erotic theme or quality

vs.

pornography coming from the Greek "porno graphos" - meaning the "writing of
harlots" - defined as: the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or
writing) intended to cause sexual excitement 2: pornographic material

the distinction is fine - and often in the eye of the definer, but none the
less, there's a difference between pornography, soft and hardcore, and it's
"artsy" sibling, erotica.

May Newsletter?

May 20, 2003, 4:24pm
Oh good heavens man, use your head :)

In a small company, specifically technical and specialty manufacturing
companies, where employees wear several hats and multi-task - everything is
related - especially during the product development time or when there is a
delivery deadline.

And in an Internet company the website and the product are tied far more
closely at a push to production than at any other time.
