Virtual Economy, More Powers for Worldowners, Shutterglasses

Apr 28, 1998, 10:16pm
[View Quote] I would tend to vote "no" for a virtual economy, at least without a lot
of research being done first. WorldsAway has a virtual economy, and I
can't see that it has enhanced the experience as much as it has allowed
the invention of virtual crime.

Tokens are earned by passing time in WA, which means you get lots and
lots of abandoned avatars, just passing time to get cash.

Besides, now 90% of the avatars in WA spend all of their time in one
location gambling. The rest of the environment stays pretty empty. You
can't even chat there....the robot game-caller does all the talking, and
it's so crowded everyone has to keep "ghosting" (being a virtual
avatar....how's that for redundant <smile>?).

It might work in AW, but only if carefully thought out. Since you
already have the example of WA, I'd strongly suggest checking them out
to learn what the problems are.

Now, before you can have any kind of cash economy, you need to be able
to pick up objects......*that's* something on *my* wishlist.

[View Quote] Hmmm...do I remember Roland commenting about (for a future release)
looking into having the browser download objects "in front" of the
avatar first? Or was that just a suggestion? If it could be done, it
should cut down the initial download by 50% to 75%....then can fill in
the rest while you're looking at the available scene.

Some kind of priority download schema would probably be of benefit,
either way. Most numerous objects first? Certainly ground object and
backdrop first.

I think I've already mentioned all of these, but it can't hurt to put
them out again.

A Deny Entry list in the World options, in addition to (or instead of?)
the Allow Entry list.

Or, the ability to place a path name in the Allow Entry box which points
to a file. This would allow World owners to make their Allow list as
long as they wanted, with minimal impact on the server.

Two Object Paths for Worlds.....a primary, and a secondary. If the
browser can't find the object in the primary location, fall back to the
secondary location.

Support of RWXMod...and any enhancements at all.

It would be great if we could point the cursor at a vertex, and have
RWXMod tell us the co-ords of that vertex.

This is real pie-in-the-sky....but it would be nice if moving the
viewpoint/camera would cause the avatar to move its head accordingly.

The ability to re-download a single object on command.

As an example.....a "Reload" button in the Build window. Right click an
object, hit the "reload" button, and it forces the browser to
re-download both object and texture.

I think it's already been mentioned here, but I'll add my 2/c worth....

The ability to pick up and carry one or more objects.

Perhaps this could be done if there were a new class of
objects...."temp" objects.
No owner (not even "0" for tourist). Can be created/picked
up/moved/deleted by anyone, tourists included. Can be created anywhere,
even over some else's "claimed" land (remember, anyone can delete them,
so trash and vandalism shouldn't be a problem). Can be picked up and
carried by avatars. Could be warped from one location to
another.....could be used for games?

[View Quote] There are lots of ways to get all of the objects to download, such as
clearing your
cache. I'm asking for something that will allow you to download only
one object at
a time, and you chose which object. Much faster. For modelers, for
those times
your cache gets corrupted and you can't seem to get it straight by
deleting the
whole thing, when a texture or mask goes bad, etc.

[View Quote] Cul-de-sac: French for "end of (a/the) bag". Defined by Webster's as a
"blind
alley". No alleys in Houston. I've heard it used for any short street
in a
residential area surrounded by houses with only one outlet. The
cul-de-sac I
live on is U-shaped, has seven houses around it, and several trees in
the median.

[View Quote] If you want something to feel paranoid about, how about Win95/CIH......a
virus that can flash your BIOS? For most machines, that means you have
to replace hardware in order to get it running again. There are already
several flavors floating around....one of which hits on the 26th of
*every month*......

[View Quote] My hardware consultant tells me that "some" motherboards can be jumpered
to make the BIOS write-protected, not "most". He says that he thinks
about half of the computers we have at work are jumperless. Also, you
have to make sure that the jumpers are set correctly....if they were set
to "write" and not set back, even having a jumpered motherboard won't
save you.

most company computers weren't being used that go around. What about
August 26th? And that's only one version of CIH....there are several
floating around.

Really not trying to be an alarmist.....they report that this virus will
show up with *most* virus-scanning software. It's just a measure of how
persistant the virus-writers are....

Asus.

Does anyone know of any other brand?
