It isn't a hoax.
As the owner of Axis, the passwords posted yesterday (now removed I
believe), had Axis in the list.. the password was indeed correct. The
password is outdated now of course, as the password is a month old. I have
since closed the world and I am changeing things. Eventually I hope to have
a better and more secure way of protecting my objects outside the
activeworlds browser.

Yeah, I had AW running on Red Hat 9 with WINE a while back (since upgraded
to FC2 and haven't tried since). I had the issue where I had to use
software to get any graphics.

The reason why sounds are worse for some and better for others (they sound
way better for me) is that AW switched from the old crummy sound system to a
proper DirectSound system... When you get pretty bad sounds on DirectSound
it usually means you have a pretty bad sound card.

Yes, the SDK has many new features that make things nicer.
One of my favorites is the aw_console_message(); method :)

Before I begin this post, I would like to point out that this dispatch is
not meant to be inflammatory towards anyone one person and/or groups within
these forums. Also this message is in HTML format. If you don't like it,
you are obviously a gross ignoramus and thus this attempt to help you is
beyond your theoretical maximum perception.
It has come to my attention that these hearsay collections have been overrun
by extensive meaninglessness. Thusly this has provoked me to compose a
guidebook on "intelligent posting."
"Intelligent posting?" one may ask their self. This concept stems from the
idea that every individual is competent enough to understand and comprehend
the three basic concepts of language. These concepts are decorum,
grammar/spelling, and the ability to form coherent ideas. With these three
skills in mind I'll provide you with information on how one can
intelligently post.
The first key to composing a message is etiquette. Think to yourself, would
you like others to be fastidious towards you? If not, then don't be
persnickety towards others. With this in mind, one can properly understand
how being pleasant to others returns politeness towards you. Using this
concept you should be able to use proper etiquette and compose messages that
aren't rabble-rousing or spiteful towards other individuals. In cases where
others refuse to be courteous and/or don't simply comprehend the concept of
being polite try being nice towards them, merely replying with discourteous
messages only provokes them further and fuels their abhorrence towards you.
With this in mind, I shall move onto my next point.
Another key factor in electronic communication is grammar and spelling.
These two are the backbone to language and help keep your conveyance of
thoughts towards others coherent. Grammar keeps structure to your thoughts
while spelling makes it easier for others to understand those thoughts.
Below I've provided a basic list of common grammar and spelling mistakes
along with proper usage.
GRAMMAR
1. Your and you're. Most people get these two confused. Your shows
possession while you're is a contraction for you are. For example instead
of saying "Your dumb." Try "You're dumb," or simply "You are dumb."
2. It's and its. These two can be easily confused as they seem to go
against the basic rules of English. It's is a contraction for "it is" while
its shows possession. For example instead of saying "Its a great day!" try
using "It's a great day!" also instead of "That is it's cow." try using
"That is its cow."
SPELLING
1. U and UR. These are simply incorrect and foolish. Try using you
and your/you're instead.
2. R. Also another foolish spelling. Try using are.
3. Alot. This is incorrect; it is spelt as "a lot."
With this list in mind I shall move onto my next point.
The last and final point I have to make is the ability to
form coherent ideas. Based of my previous points this should not be a
tedious task. One can merely think of an idea and convey it using etiquette
and proper spelling/grammar. Sometimes even using these concepts can make
it hard to convey your thoughts to others. One way to help you out is
before posting your message ask a friend to read it and see if they can
understand the idea you are trying to put forth. If not try revising it and
having your friend read it again until you've correctly conveyed your
thoughts.
This concludes my post. Keep these concepts in mind when
you make future posts. Maybe you'll be more coherent and the replies you
get will be just a bit more polite than before.

If you're running Windows XP, it is an exploit in a program called Windows
Messenger (not related to the popular IM program). That was originally
intended for system administrators to send messages to users. A quick and
easy way to disable this is to visit
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
It'll teach you how to disable this service. :)

Anyone that would consider a product such as Active Worlds as an
entity belonging to the community is obviously oblivious to what the
real-world laws state. Perhaps being such a recluse from the true reality
has created this delusion of grandeur of being the "savior of the
community." Pooling together resources from U.S. Laws on copyright and the
license agreement included with the Active Worlds installer will show that
this program is indeed a product belonging to Active Worlds, Inc. and not
the community.
In examining the U.S. Copyright laws provided at
http://www.copyright.gov/ a copyright can be held on anything that can be
attached to a tangible medium. This includes a computer hard drive. The
site itself provides information (available at
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wwp) on such tangible mediums
illustrated below:
Copyright protects "original works of authorship" that are fixed in a
tangible form of expression. The fixation need not be directly perceptible
so long as it may be communicated with the aid of a machine or device.
Copyrightable works include the following categories:
1. literary works;
2. musical works, including any accompanying words
3. dramatic works, including any accompanying music
4. pantomimes and choreographic works
5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works
6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works
7. sound recordings
8. architectural works
These categories should be viewed broadly. For example, computer programs
and most "compilations" may be registered as "literary works"; maps and
architectural plans may be registered as "pictorial, graphic, and sculptural
works."
It's obvious that then Active Worlds is classified as a literary work. Now
that it's seen that Active Worlds is a copyrighted product you'll notice
that you can not use this product as you see fit. When you are paying those
citizenship fees for Active Worlds or paying for your world you are not
paying for ownership of the products, but instead you are paying a royalty
fee to obtain a license to use these products. By paying this fee you have
agreed to the license terms and are legally bound by these terms. A quick
excerpt from the license agreement provided by the Active Worlds installer
(available at http://activeworlds.com) will help clarify your rights to use
this product. "This license does not grant you any right to any enhancement
or update. Furthermore, this license does not grant you continued access to
AW Software." This statement alone legally allows Active Worlds, Inc. to
restrict your access to their product.
With this in mind, Active Worlds is the property of a
corporation. This corporation is privately owned and operated. This means
that they have the say-so in every decision made. Unlike a public company
that's bound to the votes by its shareholders, Active Worlds, Inc. does not
have to listen to anyone when making decisions about their products. This
is the reason why democracy can not simply exist in Active Worlds. Perhaps
you should have bought shares when the company was public to keep the
product as a community ran endeavor, but due to the failure of this venture
the ability to do this is now gone.
The next time you have the urge to post about the battle between
"Good and Evil" and how the community must run Active Worlds as a democracy
for it to survive, stop and think about the points illustrated here. You
are just one of the many who agreed to a license of a product distributed by
a privately owned corporation.

I apologize for the sloppy layout and excessive newlines on the above post,
Outlook Express ate my formatting. :)

Just look at MMORPGs... they all used to be $9.95/mo., but a lot have raised
prices to $12.95/mo. now :)
The newer ones will even charge more than that!

First if, I'd like to apologize for the crosspost to the community group,
but I figured people here would be interested in this too.
For those of you following the worldbuilders newsgroup, you would know about
my attempts to program an avatars.dat editor. Well I'd like to announce
that the alpha version has arrived for use! You can find the download link
at http://byte3d.phpwebhosting.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=3.
I'd like it if you read the posting at the link first before downloading the
program, it has a few topics on the current release and what you should
expect. This is very important to read!
Thanks,
Byte Me

Yeah, I plan on getting it as a builti-in resource once I go into beta, but
for now zipping it up with the program will suffice.

Time (DST) is the first Sunday of the month of April and the first day of
Standard Time (ST) is the last Sunday of the month of october. :)

Actually funny thing about Indiana... ;)
76 counties in Indiana are in the Eastern Standard Time Zone and never
switch to Daylight Savings time. While 11 counties use the Central Time Zone
and do switch to Daylight Savings in April. The five remaining counties are
on Eastern time and do switch to Daylight Savings. :)

It really depends on the video card, IMO.
I've been running a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 with all the nVidia anti-aliasing and
graphics settings set to incredibly high. It looks great to me. :)
