I said "huh?" because I was blindsided by such an off-base remark. I didn't
know quite how to take it aside from being astonished that someone would
make such a silly, uninformed remark. I think he must work for one or the
other of the US Presidential campaign groups...

Hi guys,
Just so you are aware, there have been several tourists coming into AW and
talking about this "new, cool, adult universe that AW Inc. is running". If
you check out the site (which is now on our eject list) you will see that
they copyright and license everything, AW, Inc.
This is NOT an Activeworlds, Inc. software developement or partner. It is
however a sleazy attempt for a chat site that seems to be using VZones with
naked avatars trying to pass itself off to the unwary.
Make sure you clearly understand the license agreement and you trust the
vendor of whatever software you download and run.

Congrats! :)
You guys did a great job! Just as one more side note, with those onboard 3D
chips you might end up with some problems installing a new card (depending
on the make). Last upgrade I did from a onboard needed to have jumpers on
the motherboard set.

To my knowledge water is the only liquid which EXPANDS (quite a bit) when
frozen - most liquids contract. This is what makes ice float (which is very
good news for fish, bad news for the guy who forgets the beer in the fridge)
http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/8a.html
I think what they are saying is that when the ice formed it floated -
because of bouyancy, and when it melts - it simply goes back to the original
state because of displacement. This would mean the Greenland Cap meltwater
would not cause the ocean level to rise, but it would also mean that there
would be no icecap surface above the water. This is bad for Eskimos, polar
bears, seals, fish and bacteria. Who knows what it might mean for ocean
current and weather patterns as well as the foodchain.
So if the Earth only had "floating" icecaps the sealevel would not rise
merely because the "floating" ice melted, nor would it go down. But bad
things would most likely would happen. Of course, the icemelt from the
South Pole, since it is not floating but sits on Antartica and is MUCH
larger in mass - would cause the sealevel to rise quite a bit. Unless they
are figuring that the South Pole is upside down so it doesn't really
count...

In my understanding, "survival of the fittest" is the common phrase often
used to describe Darwin's theory of Natural Selection (postulated as one of
the mechanisms driving change in a species over time). Unfortunately, this
term is incomplete, imprecise and often very misleading in most
applications.
Survival is only one component of selection of any kind - natural or
otherwise. As an example; someone with many inherited genetic defects might
marry young and have many offspring carry his/her genes, and yet die
tragically while still at a young age. A second person with near perfect
genetic health, might remain single and childless for many years. The "fit"
survived and yet these genes no longer exist prevalently in the population -
while the "non-fit" genes exist in multitudes.
While this example uses people who are free to make decisions, there are
quite a few other variables in a biological sense that determine which genes
are passed on even in the animal world. The ability to attract a mate and
reproduce often has very little to do with "fitness". Fitness, in
evolution, is the average reproductive output of a class of genetic variants
in a gene pool.
The last piece of pizza, or last anchovy, turtles, giraffes or fruitfly -
the one no one ate - "survived" even though it was identical to all it's
siblings. Fit does not necessarily mean biggest, fastest or strongest.
Sometimes it just means "luckiest". And sometimes the difference can only
be described in philosophical terms (wrong place, wrong time).
To add to this, unfortunately, this overused, misunderstood and misapplied
concept has also been used over many years as an excuse for individuals or
even entire ethnic groups to commit hate crimes or even genocide. It would
be very difficult, perhaps impossible, to argue they are wrong using
"science" as our only guide.
