e n z o // User SearchAfter Talking to AW about lost web site imagesApr 16, 2003, 5:47pm
The reason for this behaviour is, that, starting with 3.4, the AW
browser shows a referrer like: "aw://64.94.241.250:5670/aw" (aw://host:port/islandname), while the clients up to version 3.3 showed no referrer. In this regard, the behaviour is not a bug, but an intended behaviour following standards. Now, the companies who do not allow "remote loading" (eg. Geocities and Lycos) check for the referrer and allow a picture to display only when the referrer starts in the same vincinity as the website itself or there is no referrer (probably to allow for email useage, since normally, even this had to be blocked). The new transmitted referrer does not satisfy those conditions, not to speak about the non-standard protocol type "aw://" (which could be, apart from the above mentioned, another condition, when those websites check for a http protocol address). The browser identification itself (here: "ActiveWorlds/version (build)", eg. "ActiveWorlds/3.40 (449)" does not play a big role anyway, since serious applications would not check the presented name due to the multiple methods of forging it (instead, they would test for the reaction on specific methods, still not bullet-proof, but more advanced). MonitoringAug 13, 2003, 12:44pm
Recently there have been some postings in this group that you all as the
readers do not wish to remain. It is not the intention that AWI monitors this group as we do with the community group. In fact as AW employees we do not read or respond to posts in this group at all. That being said, I have recieved several emails asking for certain recent posts to be deleted due to personal attacks on members. I am deleting several of these. In the future if there is a post that contains offensive material please respond to the thread with not discussion, but with the subject "ENZO please delete". This will make the thread shorter, will not fan the fire and will make these posts easier to find. We will not start actively monitoring this group but may respond when threads marked like this show up. This is a group for you. Please use it reponsibly. If outcry is too-much/too-often, we will have no choice but to close general.discussion Thank you, E (3.1) Move/Rotate Command enhancement (With examples)Apr 3, 2003, 4:49pm
Wellllllll....
3.4 is obviously not released yet but we have already started considering features for 3.5 or 4.0 One feature that is near the top of the list is "movers". While "move" and "rotate" are great little commands there is a need for a higher level of scripting to do the things you describe. One existing problem is the shared state of the veiwer and the object is not shared with others. Aside from the ability to "sync" an event with the clock you really have no control as to what everyone else sees. A door appears to open (bump rotate 0, 0, 1) for you, but everyone else sees you walking through it. Currently only by using a bot can you fix this problem. Another example, if I start a move on a train.rwx it will only go to my visible range and then disappear, this distance is differnent for everyone - and once the train.rwx disappears... so does the command. Your command suggestion would work for you but anyone else who walked in after it had started would not see it, or they would see it in a different position. And if the numbers were larger than the visible distance the animation would stop. A solution for these problems is "movers". Movers would probably be a seperate class of objects which the server could recognize as a shared event object. This would allow the server to track events that started either by a script or an action in world. If this is done train.rwx is seen by everyone in the same place (no matter when the entered the world... or what there visible range is) A mover should be able to follow waypoints you could set from coords. A mover might also allow people to "ride" it (elevators- buses-merrygorounds- rollercoasters) Anyways... it is on the list but not simple E A "mover" could travel in a specified area and be a shared event throughout. E N Z O!! YOU GO GO GO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Aug 10, 2001, 4:52pm
It is you prerogative to see things any way you wish. There was nothing in
that post slanted to gain your respect or pity. I am merely explaining in a personal reply to Goober King the reason why his insinuation was false. He had addressed it to "To Whom it may concern". He chose to post it not I. The fact he snipped the text I included tells me that perhaps he is being incendiary If you read my words you will see the history of AW. Those are some of the facts of its inception. We had practically no money and we worked really hard. The people who were employed here at the time were very talented and worked very hard. They were not able to make the utopian dreams of not getting a paycheck but having a great job and still be able to pay the bills work for them. Not one line of code was ever written for AW without having a check being attached to it. I assume that you have a job and if so are probably paid. Those are realities none of us escape. Some of us are able to go out on a limb for a time with the risk that it could crash and burn. No pity is needed, it worked out. Our success does not mean that we now have to do what every Goober King tells us, nor does it give us free reign to ignore him. Many of his ideas are valid and good. I have suggested that he work along with JBELL. The suggestion to create a world in which we can talk together was discussed at the Reunion. Everyone seemed to think it was a good idea. Why not work together instead of fractioning off into splinter groups? GK has a lot to add. Can he work with AWDebate? Does he want to? Does he need to be the man in charge? Does HE represent a majority? He does not address these issues with me. It has been brought up several times as to, "why don't Rick and JP participate in the community?" It is simply that no matter what we say we get flamed by some very vocal posters who claim to speak for the majority. You refuse to listen because you hold on with desperation to your petty conspiracy theories. You plot to bring down stock prices or stage a revolt so people won't register. When a feature is added it isn't the right one for you. When we explain why we do something we are "greedy" or lying. It is very disheartening to work hard and then be sworn at, called an idiot or be told that you are lying. Many of the topics betray the ignorance of a small but very vocal group of zealots. It is quite frankly a waste of time to debate with flamers. If this is how you like to spend your time, that is your right. I do not think it reflects the majority. I know it does nothing to improve your community or the software we write. The software, the community and the company are here to stay. Why not lose the attitude and make it better? Hi Casay,
Thanks for writing. I am sorry if my personal letter to Bob implied anything negative towards you. I also did not realize that he was posting it on the newsgroup. My comment was not meant to start a debate of "custom avatars". I wrote, "I assume this must come from a very high level programmer for it to be "easy"." Please let me explain: My comment was taken directly from a quote I recieved from a user who represents himself/herself as a CU member. My comment did not say that custom avatars was "impossible". My comment was that this CU member was refering to the project as "easy" and "simple". It was obviously coming from a source that was either an extremely talented programmer or was misinformed as to the complexity of writing 3D multiuser software. The fact that something can be done does not mean it will be done or be done immediately. Custom avatars can be done. The solution you describe to handle custom avs is well thought out and very close to one which we have considered. But, there are several other ways which may be end up more difficult to do, but far more satisfactory for long term goals and usability. Sometimes the seemingly easiest solution that just gets plugged in ends up haunting you years later. You need to make sure your solutions are going to work for years and foresee problems which may crop up later as to backwards compatibility. This is why software devwelopers are called "architects". Both Blaxxun and Atmosphere had the liberty to begin developement after AW. This means they have the advantage of observing a working system. They can develop on a different track and add features they thing they need without having a preexisting structure. Their developers have not put in "building" which I am sure some users would feel "easy" since they have seen it in AW. Until AW has only one version (3.2) which includes software rasterizers, making 2.2 unnecessary, it does not make sense to add signifigant features like "custom avs" to 3.1. If we did, those changes would need to plug back into 2.2, making developement time at least double. And might it be prudent to determine whether polygonly jointed avatars running seq files was the standard we wanted to follow. Perhaps skin and bone avatars might be a better standard since it has become accepted by most every 3D game? Perhaps we need to allow people to bring in avs from their game into AW? Do we keep support of old formats while accepting the new? Do we allow any texture or geometry or will that be abused to that offend the majority? These are issues that the architect decides while taking into consideration the goals of the end user be she corporate or consumer. I assure you that I personally have custom avs very high on my wishlist and look forward to the day we have them. I must also say that my personal wishlist does not drive the direction of AWC. My personal wish is sometimes based on what I want as an AW user and does not reflect the realities of doing business. There have been many features added which are more important for the stability and compatiblity of future versions of AW as a platform. These are where we have put the majority of our focus of late. While I know this is disappointing to some, I assure you we are working very hard not only to keep AW fun for our users today but also developing it for the future. It seems that everytime we begin a new version there are features which people feel are necessary and often "easy". Even while they are being added, other features are suggested or even deemed as "more necesary". The phrase "to many cooks" comes to mind. Activeworlds by its nature is an iterative process. Everyone who works on it or uses it becomes part of the system which makes it better. While many might feel that "custom avatars" are the top of the list there are just as many who would like "multi-universe capability", "mirrors", "guns", "voice chat", "flash support","privacy", "block swear words" or even "more animals". While all of these may be important, not all can be done at once. AW is growing and getting better, pleae be patient with us. We do listen and many times take the suggestions which often are relatively naive, such as, "why not just add a checkbox, that can't be to hard?" and take the time needed to make it work in the real world. Please realize that everytime we add new features they are added into a version which needs extensive testing both inhouse and beta. These upgrades take time, especially when they involve the complex issues of late. Even if a solution is "easy" adding it to a spec which is nearing completion is not feasible. Doing so would extend the inhouse testing even further and make the beta test more difficult. We would be adding complexity beyond that which exists and therefore make everyone wait even longer. This would not be wise either for business or community goals. We are very near to a beta release of 3.2 and I am sure there will be features that make everyone happy. As to future versions, custom avatars are on the list, whether we are able to include them in 3.3 is just not decided as of yet. Thank you for writing, Rick Noll CEO Activeworlds Corp. Over the last week or two several issues have erupted between members of the community. This Newsgroup was not intended to be a place where names and insults would be thrown back and forth. It is a community group and to me that means people that are working/playing/communicating together with a positive goal not a negative one. I realize that there are always going to be missunderstanding between people, and that not everyone will agree on how issues should be handled. That being said, I also realize that by tearing others down no good results. Several valued members of the community have actually called the office because they are so disturbed and hurt by what is being said here in the newsgroup. While I find it difficult to believe that anyone can be that affected by posts here - especially since you can filter or ignore threads or posters you do not like, I do know that people are being hurt deeply. Since this is the case and since this is not the purpose of this group I must ask you all to please refrain from the flame wars that are marring this group. While it is a very time consuming process to go through, read and delete messages, we will being doing so to the best of our ability. If a post is judged to be defamatory or immflamatory and of no real value it will be deleted. I assure you some will be missed. Please ignore them. I can also assure you that some non deserving posts will be deleted, for this I apologize in advance. If this newsgroup is of value to you please use it with respect for your community. Regards ENZO PS... It was a lot easier when you only flamed me and Cryonics ;) NewsgroupsNov 6, 2002, 3:48pm

That is incorrect.
This is a community ng. You are the community. You all have been calling me to get stuff deleted. I will delete obvious stuff. But, I am sure there are several conscientous people here who are aware of threads that are about topics I do not have any knowledge of which might need a mouthwashing. It's up to you :) [View Quote] NewsgroupsNov 6, 2002, 6:50pm
Actually something is being done. We are adding an improvement to the way
worlds are listed in the World list. The listing will be based on your rating settings. The rating setting will have a password which will be stored on our side. This will mean that if your setting is PG, the worlds G and PG will show in your tab. Worlds with a higher rating would not show unless you upped your rating. Little Johnie couldn't up the rating unless he could confirm the password Mommy and Daddy had set. Hopefully, this will help the conflict that now exists. As I have pointed out in several emails, AW already has in place features that allow the user to self censor their experience. These include "mute" "mute-on-sight" "block" and others. These features also exist in most news readers and email programs. The results always depend on your willingness to not involve yourself in the things you do not like. Nice suggestion.
BTW... next year... the CY Awards world will be required to maintain a rating which will determined by its highest rated Nominee [View Quote] NewsgroupsNov 7, 2002, 1:14pm
The Cy awards are not and have never been an AW Inc. sponsored event. They
have always been taken care of by the community members who sacrifice their time and effort to make them happen. AW Inc. makes software. You make worlds. Those worlds have content. If the content falls into one rating or another then there needs to be a rating which allows veiwers to chose if they wish to visit. This feature will be built into the software. How you use it will be your responsibility. World owners will have to be responsible as will veiwers who set their personal rating limits. Your invocation of the Oscars is not logical. Rarely (and I say rarely because I am almost positive but could be wrong) does a X rated movie win an Oscars. There are other award shows that do present films of that rating with awards, but not the Oscars. Also, the Oscars as do the Cy awards often become places for advertising worlds and philosophies. This is not meant as a discussion point. "Policing" will be done by you the world owner and you the veiwer - not AW. ENZO [View Quote] NewsgroupsNov 7, 2002, 1:19pm
:)
I for one self censor my reading... I know who I would read messages from and what topics are of interest. Until the recent rash of calls/telegrams/email to the office I thought everyone in here did as well. With 22K of messages, I was asking for a place to start looking for posts I probably had filtered. Hey, Al Gore invented the information superhighway, can he be held responsible for all the porn? If I go down Al is going with me! E [View Quote] This is Getting Ridiculous...Nov 8, 2002, 3:08pm
It has been ridiculous for some time. I have to go through 22,000 messages
to pick em out so nobodies feelings get hurt? I tried that. I do not have that kind of time. Now I have moved on to deleting threads. I have only gone back a week or two. Please be patient ENZO [View Quote] This is Getting Ridiculous...Nov 8, 2002, 5:10pm

If you point me to these posts that have no reference I will delete them and
be done with it. The index is reset so that people are not responding to posts they have in cache but that are not really on the server. This is probably where the ghosts are coming from. E [View Quote] |
