I turned it off yesterday. Recently we have been getting a lot of
complaints about general.discussion. It has never been a moderated group or
even had charter and yet people have been emailing, telegramming and phoning
to get posts removed. Unfortunately we don't have the time to go through it
:(
Sorry,

Massachusetts's law officials have informed Activeworlds Inc. that the
alleged father of "M A T T" has been served by the District Attorney in
Kentucky with a subpoena to appear before a Grand Jury on Thursday January
14th regarding the charges against his son's activities in Activeworlds.
Currently there are many claims against M A T T, including but not limited
to, credit card fraud, hacking, theft and various postal mail violations.
As many of you have lodged complaints against M A T T and many have recently
been attacked by him please resend all complaints or post new complaints to
ABUSE at ACTIVEWORLDS.COM Please include "ABUSE BY M A T T" in the subject
line. Also, if you feel your complaint is about criminal activity or has
resulted in monetary loss please include details or amounts. If you wish to
file your own charges and need the contact info for the investigators or
even M A T T please include this in your email.
This is the first part of an ongoing investigation regarding M A T T and his
friends. If you are reading this and have been helping M A T T please be
aware that you are likely already a part of this investigation. If this is
the case it might get VERY expensive very quickly. Even if you are "just
friends" with people like this we have probably already given your name to
law enforcement agencies. Just to appear in court as a subpoenaed witness
will cost you.
Activeworlds, Inc. will not tolerate any criminal activity or abuse of our
clients if it is in our power to stop it. Activeworlds, Inc. will be
pressing charges against any people involved. We will continue to assist
investigators to locate anyone involved in this case or any others. If the
individuals are minors these charges are filed against their parents who are
never very happy to go before a Grand Jury to start their Thursday.
To all those who have helped in the investigation thank you.
Rick Noll
CEO
Activeworlds, Inc

Hello Mod,
I am not sure why you think we didn't go after M A T T. Everything we said
was and is true. The fact that people can get away with online crimes is
only a reflection that they can get away with real-life crimes also. We are
still taking action against M A T T but it takes a lot of time and if
certain law enforcement agencies do not act on our complaints, how can we
change it? I will not apologize for the judicial system of the United
States as I have control over it.

Unfortunately he seems to have a CLOSE relative that is in the legal field.
So far he seems to have avoided his court date and it looks like the local
"law enforcement", A. "can't find him" B. "nope never heard of him" C.
"no sir he's not in that schoolhouse I reckon" D. "no sir that boah is a
good boah and wern't never in no virtualllll world herassin folks" (all
air quotes I am sure ;). Of course this should come as no real surprise
when you think how long it takes to get REAL terrorists even with the entire
US military looking for them.
In any case we are still working with our police up here and putting a case
together. Since parents are liable for the acts of their children at some
point we may have to go after his CLOSE relative. If you have monetary
claims against him keep sending them. I am sure at some point his mommy will
get nervous and pull his little plug.
Seems illegal to me to knowingly ignore the US Judicial system, but what do
I know ?
Keep sending your emails to abuse at activeworlds.com

"Let's get real" ????
AW is backed up daily.
AW runs on a dedicated machine.
Routinely we do maintenance on said dedicated machine.
From time to time maintenance reveals a problem.
When a problem is found we stop the machine to fix the problem.
THe time to fix a problem on the machine varies:
A: a hot swappable part and you never notice any delay
B: a big fix that requires a new part not in stock
When the problem is fixed the machine is rebooted.
AW is back up
Wow...

If I had a nickel for every kid that telegrammed me : "Oh yeah, sure,
ROUTINE maintenance. What really happened?"....
OK OK I am ready to tell the truth. It all started as a routine inspection
of the power feed and the string accelerators. The transspace modulator we
had found at the crashsite back in 1992 had started to show signs of
subspace interphasing. If this was not locked down this would have meant
that we could have lost the entire hyperplasma interflux. Of course if it
were just Alphaworld that would have been affected then that wouldn't have
required immediate attention and we could probably have left it go for
several light seconds. Unfortunately for us it began to seem that the
failure was also creating a antimatter flux on the nanointerpolator we had
juryrigged as a power source... who knows what would happen if that had a
breach. So we shut it down and swapped the motherboard.
result:
universe safe for another day
Please keep this under your hats ok?

The post that was deleted was deleted for language. We do not take the time
to sort through all the posts and weed out the ones with the naughty words
(notice my censorship below, I don't like the word you used), nor do we take
the time to save the original post that was replied to so that the thread
can continue.
Activeworlds is a software that allows people to communicate across the
internet and interact through the use of avatars in a simulated 3D
environment. Just as the phone company is not responsible for what you say
on or do with your phone AW does not control what you do with AW software,
what you build or say here. In fact, AW is probably not even aware of some
of the things that you take for granted as being part of a global community.
AWI has added features (at the customers request) that allow users to set
world ratings and access settings. Default settings for the client are G
and PG. Worlds that exceed this rating are not shown unless YOU the client
set them. I am unclear how you can complain about worlds that you have
asked to see. If you go into an "R" or "X" movie would it be reasonable to
complain about the things you see and hear? In the same way YOU set YOUR
client and can password it to YOUR liking. World owners are required to set
their world to a setting that reflects their content. This is for you as
citizens and world owners to set. AWI does not monitor these uses as an
ongoing practice, and I am sure YOU would not want us to. If a world is
being used for illegal activity and we become aware of it we are required by
federal law to cancel the operators license. If a complaint is made that a
world has a lower setting than it should we make a request to the world
owner to remedy the problem. "BSDM" and "Gor" worlds should be set at "X"
by default. If you see ones that are not please feel free to contact us at
abuse at activeworlds.com so that we can contact the operator.
This thread will probably self destruct or internally combust within
seconds.

I don't understand.
The beta is over and we are in release. If there are bugs/issues with 3.6
they are no longer BETA problems. Please send an email to
support at activeworlds.com or beta at activeworlds.com and report your problem.
If you want to be on the NEXT beta send an email to beta at activeworlds.com
You will most likely not get an answer as currently we are in alpha with no
beta release date.
As to the "history" page, I guess the saying "History is written by the
victors" must no longer be pertinent. I find A LOT of discrepencies between
the events Eep reports and events as they actually occured (and I should
hope I could spot em since I was there) Most of what I read there seems
like someone had a very hazy veiw through a fogged up window of something
happening down the street - and then was deadset on giving an eyewitness
account. Also, I would have expected "history" to be a little more
objective and not include so much "opinion".
