new face cam in AW 3.4

Nov 18, 2002, 4:43pm
Why do people keep whining about this? We just got all these nifty new
features last spring with the multi-axis rotations, terrain (WOW) and so
forth. Lots of new fun things we're still playing with. Coronas are a
blast!
Most people really don't seem to know anything about a beta and don't give a
flying watoosi either. They're happily building away, often with those same
tired old 2.2 objects, chatting, sharing and having a fine time. Those who
didn't want to pay more went away to sister universes where they don't have
to, we who chose to stick around for whatever reason (why am I still here?
LOL) are enjoying the benefits of 3.3. I for one, prefer if they get that
beta snap-snip ship-shape perfect. I don't need to be crashing constantly
and downloading updates and patches just because some spoiled modern people
have to have every new thing yesterday.
If you think it's so easy, go build your own 3d universe!

won't be participating. I get enough commercialization crap in my real

NewAW Flyover!

Nov 19, 2002, 2:48am
WOW thankyou, that was very nice and now I know what you guys have been
talking about with the water and stuff. This is great! Gonna be fun when
it comes out!

[View Quote] Here is a movie taken in NewAW. It is 25 megs cuz I don't know the first
thing about WMV encoder. It's also a little choppy so if you have a slow
connection wait for the reviews before downloading.

http://objects.activeworlds.com/newbuild/images/flyover5.wmv

Some of the things you will see are the new camera angles, the seqs attached
to different environments such as flying, swimming, running - the seqs also
have sounds linked to them. Then we go for a flyover of some of NewAW using
the UberJetpack from Acme, it's really fast... the first couple of times I
hit trees :) we go for a swim and then fly to the mountains where I get
altitude sickness...

I will probably replace this with a better clip tomorrow.

NewAW Flyover!

You won't see anything different from AW except how the sun corona looks if
you just look at static shots. What's new is the way the water waves and
how he can leap and how the avatar behaves in flight and in water and stuff.
You can right click the link, save target as, and then watch at your
leisure.

Customs Aide Bot

I agree with you on this. I am a grownup. I use these words. i can read
these words. I rather like when I don't have to. I've seen profanity
strung out like turds on a washline and I do see the difference. They ARENT
just words, they're power words. They contain a lot of power, that's why
children like to use them. Children sense the power in these words. It's
why we constrain them. It's not healthy power like the power in words like
"Good" and "love" and "congratulations" and "luck" but rather power of
sorrow and fury. When we are suffering sorrow or fury we need power words
but every last one of us knows very well which words they are and often even
knows the cuss words in other languages! They are perfectly capable of
choosing alternate nouns and adjectives and verbs to express themselves.
Not that the sentence you quoted would be any better with technical (and
legal) terms inserted in place of the foul language LOL
However, one should get a whisper with each first instance of each cuss word
as some folks simply aren't taught good manners and use them with such habit
they need a reminder to even think about it.
Let's face it, just because you mouth said it when you accidentally deleted
your whole build doesn't mean your fingers have to type it too!
Frickin' fracking bling blang ding dang sum kinda piece'a'crap thing! LOL

I Have Expanded A!!CT World for all to enjoy!

Dec 6, 2002, 2:39am
It's also not the biggest private world in the universe either. It's
impressively big, but the biggest is an adult only world that's a p215 but
it only has a 50 person user limit and has never overrun it. Of course by
being adult only you reduce the number of people who *might* show up.

Actually the wallet is one person who is not really wealthy but rather
decided to spend their savings on providing the world for it's users. Said
person isn't exactly broke, but also not living in some mansion with horses
in the back yard. But uhm I don't know if we're allowed to speak it's name
in here or Enzo might delete the thread?
I'm not gonna give out more details, it's not my story to tell.

A lesson in Lag.

Dec 9, 2002, 8:56pm
Optimization of a build takes a number of things into account.
Firstly, the objects you use. The more variety you choose, the more it will
slow the browser down. Try to be more creative with fewer objects. Example,
if you have 20 objects in one build and 10 in the other, the 10 build will
appear all at once in half the time. Downloading slows the browser down.
You can test this by dumping your cache and seeing how the reload goes since
things easily download as you build leading to the deception that it is fast
loading.
The longer the names in the objects, the less you can fit in a cell and
this may affect performance.
The objects themselves, how they're built, can affect. If the texture is
too detailed (heavy) or the object created with too many polygons, then the
object will lag you. Create a few samples and face them each in turn with
your framerate monitor turned on (view menu, framerate will appear in your
browser's status bar at the bottom) and compare them. Usually the more
realistic it looks, the more it'll lag although many object makers have the
skill to work around that.
Try to use a few carefully placed objects to suggest the effect you are
after rather than piling on lots of little things. Work your build as if
you are designing for theatre, not reality.
Another thing to consider in building is your object description and command
fields. Again, the more text characters you have, including excess spaces
or unnecessary fancy bits, the more "heavy" your build will be. In the
command issue, if you have a dozen objects that all want to have the same
command, like a move or texture for instance, put the command into one
object below the build, some small thing you can set even just outside the
actual build area. Example: create texture wood5 name=wall Then on the
walls in question: create name wall
This will cause everything named wall to carry the texture wood5
Pick a small name. Not something like "mausoleumwalls" and no spaces!
Remember, the less text you use, the less you'll fill the area.
Ideally pick objects that already have the texture you want.
Lighting, don't put your light in your candles and light bulbs and
fireplace. Nice concept, dumb idea. Instead make some careful choices and
put in an object centrally that will simulate the effect of the lighting you
want, like if you have a circle of torches, put the lightsource underneath
the center! Light is a huge lag. Don't use it if you don't have to.
Another tip few seem to know, the more your objects overlap the more they'll
lag. Like a pile of rocks. Jammed into each other one over the other, the
browser has to constantly compute how they intersplice and how it would
look. Lag city!
Lastly, Terrain. The textures AND the shape. terrain is bad for lag. If
you're in a world with really interesting terrain you will have to work
harder to optimize. If you are a caretaker creating terrain, smooth it out,
use a lot of the same levels, keep the sloping and rolling and valleys and
peaks sensible. Remember, the more you go up and down and up and down, the
more lag you'll have. Create your terrain textures carefully to conform to
recommended AW guidelines.
While building, check your framerate monitor. Get a friend with a weaker
computer to come check it out too. Wander around facing different
directions and identifying when the framerate drops. Find out what number
of fps on YOUR system equates with intolerable lag on your friend's system.
Just because your computer is strong doesn't mean you shouldn't care about
the lag you cause to others. If your computer is so slow you're just used
to the lag and you think it's par for the course, wrong. Nope. You may
have to suffer till you can get a better machine but you can still wind up
making things very bad for others. I knew one builder with this problem.
She was incaple of recognizing lag because she was so used to crashing and
freezing constantly. Her move commands were calculated on a machine so slow
that the rest of us saw things flying at lightspeed!
Enlist the help of someone with a computer that is the opposite of yours and
let them help you refine so you are suited to the widest audience.
After all, we build to show off, not just to have, right?

CHECK THIS OUT

Dec 14, 2002, 12:29am
Doesn't anyone realize he was trying to hijack everyone's browser by forcing
a link to open without your permission?
He was trying to set up an html script that forces your browser to go to a
pre-specified link, the first step in hacking via usenet posts. Maybe his
link wouldn't have had malicious activeX scripting but nevertheless he had
no business even trying and had he succeeded he would have been turfed from
this news server probably permanently if not had his citizenship in AW
revoked. Be glad he's not only stupid enough to think that prank funny but
too stupid to pull it off.

Ok, it's an assumption, but essentially he seemed to expect the opening of
the post to automagically open the link.
I use OE because it's the only newsreader that lets me use multiple servers
on one instance of the client.

[View Quote]

how to use your OE filter

Dec 12, 2002, 10:21am
A nice feature of newsreaders is the ability to block messages by sender.
If you read something from someone which shows you that you really would
rather not know that person, it is quite easy to remove all the messages
they write from your sight.
In OE, highlight the offender's message, pull down the message menu and
select blocked sender. Ok the confirmation box and that's it, they cease to
exist.
Well mostly. You'll still see them in other ppl's replies but they're
easier to take then and it can help you feel good about blocking them, or
you can change your mind (tools menu, message rules--->blocked senders list)
if you find they aren't as offensive to you as you thought.
Cheers, happy plonking (Put Lamer ON Killfile=PLONK)
:-)

but nothing ever came of it.
Reading the website is like reading an Enron doublespeak annual report.
They've got ways of describing the same things AW has as if it were
something new. Enzo, you really oughtta look into hiring their PR
department, your sales would go through the roof!

Merry Christmas to all aw

Don't let the humbugs get you down. I don't celebrate the holiday myself
but I still appreciate the art that is created for it.

Merry Christmas to all aw

Dec 14, 2002, 7:41pm
When folks live up here in the very colder northern climes where it's dark
by 5pm they come to appreciate the spirit behind the December festivities.
We get so down from the dark and cold and before modern refrigeration and
transport we'd have been damned sick of dry apples and cabbages and pickles
and generally not eating enough and shivering in our huts with our twig
fires and whatever. So we'd all spend our time excitedly preparing for the
solstice celebrations, stitching bright sparkly embroidery on clean linen,
making candles, salting the ham, gathering more firewood. Then for one or
more days we'd all run around laughing and feasting and wearing our lovely
clothes and decorating everything with sparkles and candles and lighting the
darkness with laughter, light, song and big fires. It would be a necessary
break in the middle of the long dark winter.
THATS what christmas is really born of. In every culture that suffered a
dark winter you will find it in some form, and it usually has some winter
significance. Lots of times it's about "waking up" the sun which seems to
be having trouble getting up.
It's still performing that function for many people. In summer we get out
every weekend to go play in the parks or to the cottage or go camping or
water sports or parties. In winter we get cabin fever, stay inside, huddle
in our solitude. Around christmas we get out again, go visiting, share
food, give stuff to each other (promotes community) and sparkle things up.
Furthermore, if we didn't have recorded music and broadcasting we'd be
damned grateful for our christmas carols and people who took time off work
to practice then perform them on the street would be very welcome.
In short, Yuletide celebrations are primarily about community and surviving
the long winter.

Merry Christmas to all aw

Hehehe, now lets all argue about when the new year should REALLY begin!
I opt for November 12, the ancient northern european new years. ~grin~

Logitech Giveaway

Dec 17, 2002, 2:05am
Canada requires by law that all prize winners submit proof of minimum
mathematical skills to demonstrate that theya re competent enough to manage
the financial benefits of any given prize. It's an old holdover and frankly
it's stupid but we all gotta do it. Furthermore, in Quebec you have to
submit to a special lottery licensing commission and pay extra fees to
legally give things away so many contests are ineligible because it's just
not worth the promotional advantages to deal with the red tape.

China? What's chinese about it?
The wall around it? Its just a wall with turrets. A rather nice one in
fact. Just because there's a large stone wall with turrets and a road on it
doesn't make it chinese!
It's fantasy, that's all. Just a 3d sculpture you can walk around in and a
rather nicely built one at that!
Methinks mayhaps you should go back to school and learn a bit more about the
world before you go about making yourself look so incredibly narrow minded,
uninformed, judgemental and downright foolish.

World Server.... or not?

Jan 18, 2003, 6:46pm
Zone Alarm has this thing it does. When you exit it, it doesn't really go
away. Even when you uninstall it, there is an engine still running which
can block any or all of your internet connections without giving you a CLUE!
I couldn't find the link so I am pasting all the info I saved from my own
battle with Zone Alarm for you so you can do a search and see if maybe zone
alarm is responsible.
Another free firewall, if you choose to switch, is outpost at
www.agnitum.com
At least when it's off or uninstalled it's really off!
Andras would host your world free because it's not much trouble to add a
world to a server and for tiny personal worlds it's nothing for bandwidth,
and because he's a really nice guy who's been around helping people forever,
giving away free software he makes to solve AW problems and being available
for all kinds of tech help, all for the pure hobby of it.
It's the object path that really sucks the bandwidth and hogs the
drivespace.

Under Windows NT/2000, these two registry keys, and all their subkeys,
denote the TrueVector service and the TrueVector device driver:

Key: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsmon

Key: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant

Under Windows NT/2000, this registry key and its subkeys denote
ZoneAlarm's alert logging service:

Key: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\minilog

This is a database that contains a long list of values, but only these
values are related to ZoneAlarm and TrueVector:
Key:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs
Values:

C:\Windows\System\Zone Labs\vsdb.dll
C:\Windows\System\Zone Labs\minilog.exe
C:\Windows\System\Zone Labs\vsmon.exe
C:\Windows\System\Zone Labs\vsruledb.dll

For each user who has run ZoneAlarm, there are registry keys in
Key: HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Zone Labs

The following keys allow the user to modify the sound that is played
when there is an alert through use of the Control Panel Sounds applet:
Key: HKEY CURRENT USER\AppEvents\EventLabels\InternetAlert
Key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\InternetAlert\.current

You can uninstall the program manually by removing the following files
and registry entries.
Files installed with ZoneAlarm:
Installing ZoneAlarm places program files in three places:

The c:\ZoneLabs\ZoneAlarm folder contains these files:
zonealarm.exe
zoneband.dll
license.txt
readme.txt
unwise.exe
install.log
\Help folder containing a number of files

The c:\windows\system folder contains these files:
vsutil.dll
vsmonapi.dll
vsdata.dll
vsdata95.vxd -- if computer runs Windows 95 or 98
vsdatant.sys -- if the computer runs Windows NT or Windows 2000

The c:\windows\system\zonelabs folder contains these files:
vsdb.dll
html.tdr
vsmon.exe
vsruledb.dll
Installing also creates a shortcut called "ZoneAlarm.lnk" in the
C:\Windows\Start Menu\All Users\Programs\StartUp
folder.

Files created by ZoneAlarm as it runs:

When running ZoneAlarm, the following files are created:

In the c:\windows\internet logs folder:
iamdb.rdb
<mycomputer>.ldb (where the <mycomputer> is your computer name)

Note: The uninstaller does not normally remove these files, so that your
settings are retained when you upgrade to a new version.

5.Registry Entries

Installing and running ZoneAlarm creates the following registry entries:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm and all its subkeys

For each user who has run ZoneAlarm, there are registry keys in
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm
Users who have run ZoneAlarm versions prior to 1.8.2 may find entries in:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Zone Labs\Monitor

If your system is running Windows 95 or Windows 98, this registry value
starts the TrueVector service.
Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
Value: TrueVector

Under Windows NT, these two registry keys, and all their subkeys, denote
the TrueVector service and the TrueVector device driver:

Capitalize your nick first....

Go see if you can find any of the pulp fantasy novels written by John Norman
on which the "lifestyle" is based. They're really quite entertaining
reading and not too intellectual for a quick read. They're based on the
theory that earth has a sister world hiding always exactly across the orbit
so that the sun prevents us ever seeing it, a world called Gor. On this
world things are considerably less gentle. It's written from the POV of a
fellow who's captured by alien space craft and delivered to Gor where he
encounters dragons and maids in peril and evil kings and runs around killing
things with a sword. He is a university student whose most athletic
accomplisments are fencing and hiking but suddenly he finds he can run all
day, fight off wild animals and giant beasts and troops of angry swordsmen
and still spend the whole night making love and do all again the next day,
often going days between meals and rest. LOL
You will find that the communities which are offshoots of this novel series
deviate in varying degrees and some are so far off that barbarism and
slavery are all they hold in common with the original series.

What is happening to AW?

Feb 8, 2003, 6:40pm
Letting tourists go to alphaworld but not build might be good. That'd
require a change to build rights but such a change would do a world of good.
time to change it so you can let everyone except 0 build! Then tourists
would have MUCH more incentive to pay because they could see what they're
missing!
Think of it, if they could explore anywhere and chat with anyone in any
world, but they couldn't build unless they paid, wouldn't that work nice?
The price is a bit hard, but clearly many of us consider it affordable,
we're here!
