I am not saying to have the background change for everyone, just the person
clicking the button. If they want to teleport to a zillion places and click
a zillion buttons then ok maybe it won't work. But would people really do
that?

I am just saying 1 person 1 button 1 background, that's all. Whoever clicks
the button sees the change, NO ONE else.

AWGor Age Restrictions

Apr 8, 2001, 11:16pm
Does AW allow people to buy a citizenship without a credit card? Assuming
the answer is no, then to have a citizenship you have to be at some age. If
a parent bought one for their child, then I would say allow people in the
world. The owner can always ban them from the world if they misbehave.

If parents don't want their child there, then they should monitor what the
child does on the computer more. It isn't our job to babysit.

I have met a lot of good and not so good teens. Again I stress, if it
anyone regardless of age disrupts a world, then the owner can ban them.
Base your actions on behavior not age. I think you will find this more
successful

OK try again. How come sometimes my replies don't show up here?

I will type my response again and this tiem COPY it if it doesn't work LOL,
errr

Does AW require payment by credit card? If so, doesn't that assume someone
of a certain age acquired the account?

If it was a parent buying one for a child, then that child should be judged
based on their actions, not age.

If they misbehave, have the owner simply ban them.

I think you will find this a better resolution then trying to enforce age
checks.

Why does AW have it set up this way?

It is very hard to use the board the way it is. I don't know if my messages
are sent, and there is no "go back" feature to enable a person to retry in
case it didn't work the first couple times.

If they had it on a message board like EZboard, then all you have to do is
access one URL. Going through Outlook Express I have to going through all
these "GET SMART" doors and password games just to see no one responded to
my post. It is rediculous!!!!!

Something to consider

Apr 8, 2001, 10:02pm
I recently offered something to AW and I would like to get people's opinion
here. Right now, it's 69.95 to register a world and 10 for the smallest,
making a total of about $80. Here is what I propose and tell me if I am off
my rocker or not, LOL.

A world is good if you have something new to add to it, otherwise it appears
people have to grab objects from worlds they could build in as citizens
without paying for a world. So, I feel there needs to be a combo offer like
True Space 3 with a world. That is priced also at 69.95.

I suggest in order to provide a complete package to citizens or newcomers
who want to dive head first into world designing to offer a $100.00 combo
including a world and true space. Citizens don't need another citizen which
is a $20 value. Non-citizens could get a free month then have to pay an
additional $20 at the usual rate.

But wait that's a $50 loss it seems, 30 if you subtract 20 a citizen costs
which an already registered citizen wouldn't need). Or is it? If you figure
they will be charging at least $30 per following year (10 for the smallest
world and 20 for the citizen), in 2 years they will be $10 ahead of what
they are offering now. Most people also will want to expand giving them
further money.

If that isn't enough to make AW want to try this, then consider this also.
They can update True Space, and sell updates to people who already bought
their package for $25.

World upgrades are 40-60 next up on the list of prices on their site which
brings us a total of over $200. Now, right now they sold me $20. I am not
paying $80 for just a world, no way, no how, NADA!!

AW, do you want to be 180$ richer by me and possibly more so if others buy
into this?

Something to consider

Apr 8, 2001, 10:44pm
Ok, third to see if this response works. Sorry if it appears to people 3
times here. I just can't get my response to show.

Did you mean $69.95 for a combo of a world and true space 3? AW itself is
free to download and doesn't expire.

Active World's bait and switch operation

Apr 11, 2001, 6:53pm
I have been discussing with AW in email, trying to resolve a matter which
they don't seem to care about.

I was told in December when I signed up that I could have my citizenship
credited towards a world. Now they want to charge the full price.

I will have to pay the same price for a world that inlcudes a citizen. That
means either you pay $100 for a world, NOT $80 unless you know you want it.

How was I supposed to know then I wanted to invest money for a world before
building and learning it?

Please read the post again more carefully.

"I wasn't aware you could apply the cost of your existing citizenship"

Apparently, you can't. They sell you a citizenship, then when you want to
get a world they sell you a world which includes a citizen. If I knew about
that, I wouldn't have bought a citizen and built as a tourist. Then, I
would have purchased a world for $80. If I buy a world now, it would come
to a total of $100.

"It would help maybe if this was an e-mail
correspondence you had with them."

In my original post I said, "I have been discussing with AW in email"

Please read these posts carefully, sorry for snapping but when you type the
same thing over and over again and people don't read your words it gets very
frustrating trying to communicate.

"But if they don't honor that...."

that = emailing or does that = discount if I try out the citizenship, then
pay for a world later

AW will get $20 more ($100 total) from each person that buys a citizenship
first if they charge that citizen who could have paid for a world at $80
instead of $60 using the smallest world as an example.

"And as long as your world is renewed, so will the citizenship."

If I could have my citizenship renewed with the $10 renewal fee for the
smallest world the following year, YEAH I would pay. That is half the cost
of a citizen.

But, I am afraid to say, if you purchase a world you will be guranteed to
have to pay $30 the next year.

I proposed this for AWschool. They should offer a truespace and a world
combo for $100. Then they can do various things liek upgrade True Space and
sell the upgrades.

LOL, I am not hassling them.

They responded eventually to my emails, and gave me a reasonable answer for
how they do business.

Because it doesn't run in sync with my personal views doesn't mean it isn't
worth bringing up in here to discuss the matter. After all, they were the
ones who showed me how to post here. I have never used Outlook before, so I
didn't know how to even sign on to a newsgroup.

Yes I am being anal. If I want to use several programs and budget myself, I
need to know where my money is going to. 20 here, 20 there adds up
eventually. I am proposing ways to consolidate services and offer more from
Active Worlds side, thus reducing overall costs on the citizens, you and me,
and at the same time making more money from us because they are offering
things I don't need to get elsewhere.

Saying that I want to post a message here, and saying that I want to pay
$200 to Active Worlds for what I think is a fair price considering what I
asked for is in NO way hassling, haggling, maybe. If you don't like it,
move on. I don't have time to defend my words to everyone that misreads the
intent.

Well, a central place for all citizens to see events would be nice. So far,
I haven't seen it. There are many signs showing events at different
locations, but if AW posted here in a central forum, we could see them
without searching for them. Not only that, but citizens could respond. I
see SW Comit with his casino and a few others post events here. I think
that is great, it gets the word out.

I have been doing webdesign on a small and medium scale. My advice from =
that experience would be: know upfront CLEARLY what you are actually =
designing for. If it is to get a job done, know what it requires. If =
it is because you want to be a programmer with a huge vocabulary of =
stuff on an academic level, read and take classes. I use software and I =
apply it. I make it a point to be able to learn any software program I =
can, but I pay very little attention to the programming aspect. You may =
be different and have different goals.

There is just so much you can do to make your text, pictures, and sound =
files fit the net. Technology is better away from the computer, and it =
has to become compromised so all our computers can relate. With text, =
keep it off of programs like Flash or pictures. With Pictures, put more =
concentration on getting good scans or good shots from a digital camera. =
If you do that right, then there is less garbage on the net. I have =
yet to work with a program that does decent effects. When using sound, =
realize the download it will take for slower modems. Make sure to keep =
backups in the best quality you can with whatever you use, so you can =
use them later on.

If you are doing things on a larger scale, cookie cutter approach, then =
ask someone else. I don't do that nor do I worry about sites winning =
awards. A few years down the road, that site would never win an award. =

I design for ie purposes, and if there is a conflict with netscape then =
oh well. If someone really wants to see your site, they can access it =
through ie.

As for pop-ups, being a visitor to sites, I automatically close out =
sites with pop up ads. It doesn't do the advertiser and company paying =
for the advertising any good. People don't like to have stuff popping =
in their face and that goes with sound too. I give people the choice on =
sites I make with sound to click something to get sound. They have the =
choice if they want it. =20

So, with that said, whatever you can do to avoid this is good. Ask them =
if you can put their ad on the page somewhere. Then keep the remaing =
page ad free. I think you will see people coming to your site =
appreciate this more.

If you want to use forms, you will have to learn programming. I did a =
little bit with learning asp (active server page) for a site, which =
allows you to read and write to a text file. This could be used also as =
a form. If you want it to go to an email address, I prefer just making =
them email you. With forms going to email, you run the risk of someone =
not giving you an email address and no where to reply to. Email to =
Email forces a real email address to be used.

I think it is rather sick and twisted for people sweep this under the rug.
Pics on the net have become associated with porn, so organizations including
Active Worlds and parties involved helping to run such organizations allow
it to coexist.

The only action you can take is to boycott such organizations and stop
supporting them through funding. Put your money into organizations that
listen, respond, and act.

things.

"Laboured" is a word. If we can agree that Harvard (Yes, Harvard, the
prison looking building near the "Chaaaarles" river which you boneheads and
you know who you are will never get into)is a credible messenger of valid
literature, we can clearly see "laboured" used. I will enlighten thee now,

"We laboured for our Lord in many guises;
We toiled, but the toil is as the prize is; 84
Thou Mystery, we hail thee by thy name! "

GCN is now open

May 30, 2001, 12:18pm
Hello all,

I just ran across a very good chat program on the net called GCN. The best
thing is that it is free and you can use it in conjuction with Active Worlds
communities for voice and cam chat, and much more. Check out their Webring
group and promote your group with them by going to http://gcnwebring.cjb.com

No tourist allowed?

May 30, 2001, 10:33pm
There is no point in this, I tried to talk to Activeworlds about the very
same thing and they are too stuck up the ass to do anything for the
citizens. When someone degrades you and you complain to them, they do
nothing. When you see porn in Active Worlds areas where kids can go, they
do nothing (and AW don't respond with "did you ask a peace keeper" because I
did a lot of times giving them coordinates and world name). When you even
try to submit a group event, organization, cause, whatever to them they
don't respond. This is basically useless, and when they treat me as much as
I have seen after just 4 months of using their services, I suggest you
relieve your worries and find another program which will care about you and
your concerns.

After all, it doesn't take a genius to come up with the idea to put a
tourist newsgroup up and limit the rest to citizens. If people don't want
to read the posts, then they just don't click on them, that simple.

unmoderated chat this world has to offer and the next time i hear a PK =
shoving that world down someones throat trying to be a smartass about =
*sick*stuff don't worry i won't post it here and bother all you fine =

REMOVAL of PORN from INACTIVEWORLDS

Jun 2, 2001, 8:30am
I would like to inform people that I went to a location at Inactiveworlds to
check to see if they still were keeping porn up for people to view, and I
found out that the account outside of Inactiveworlds holding the porn was
completely closed. Inactiveworlds did nothing to contribute to the cleaning
of porn, but the people who did report it to the service provider were able
to influence them enough to take a look at the files referenced and not only
did they remove it but I repeat their account was closed.

Porn should not be here, and regardless if inactiveworlds will do nothing
about it, it is nice to see that people can come together to get rid of this
crap. Now, Inactiveworlds, want to explain why you allowed this smut to
stay here? Want to comment on why we have to go through these means just to
clean up your business?
