It's been a while since I installed awsdk.dll and I can't get awsdk2.dll to
show up in the "Add References" dialog. Adding it via the browse button only produces a complaint that it isn't registered. What simple thing am I missing? Norm Installation problemJun 30, 2003, 4:46pm
VB Update?Oct 15, 2005, 3:14am
Chris,
I've had no luck getting this registered in XP. I've had to fall back to Grimm's old wrapper. I tried "regsvr32 /i AwSDK41.dll" but got this, '"AwSDK41.dll" is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type.' I also haven't been able to get Aw.lib to work in Visual C++ Express, so I seem to be totally screwed. Any suggestions? Norm Lane [View Quote] VB Update?Oct 20, 2005, 7:10pm
I tried it again without the '/i' switch and it seems to be working fine. I
could swear I tried without the switch when it didn't work the first time. Norm [View Quote] Writing INI files for tourist namesOct 15, 2005, 3:23am
New World - Now Hiring Lead Programmer(s)!Nov 7, 2005, 6:41am
Jesus, now who's smoking dope?
> $20.00 is the going rate for a US-based, per-hour programmer who will work > on NOTHING else for 8 hours a day while under my employ. New World - Now Hiring Lead Programmer(s)!Nov 8, 2005, 9:06am
I'm retired from the software business (in the SF bay area) and I'll tell
you this, even if you find a competent programmer at those rates they will probably be snatched up by someone else in no time, as soon as they discover what they could be making. Of course, the opportunity to work on something that really turns you on is a major incentive but the toys he can play with elsewhere will tempt even a complete geek with no social life. Moreover, someone *with* a social life will probably have another helping with those decisions. Who knows, perhaps you can get away with it for six months, but the kind of inexperienced person that will work at that rate is unlikely to leave a system that can be maintained by others The free market usually assures people that they get what they pay for. By the way, "coder" is generally considered an insult. It implies someone that can't design their own code but only impliments other people's designs. Norm [View Quote] Possible to teleport or warp a bot?Nov 18, 2005, 8:39pm
It looks like there's no way for a bot to teleport or warp itself, is that
true? Suppose the bot got hold of it's own session number, would that work? How could a bot get its own session number anyway? Without the help of another bot that is. Anyone? Possible to teleport or warp a bot?Nov 18, 2005, 9:50pm

> the AW_MY_X, AW_MY_Y, and AW_MY_Z attributes to where you want to teleport > to, then call aw_state_change() That's not a teleport, it's a walk. Possible to teleport or warp a bot?Nov 18, 2005, 10:20pm
That's true, thanks. I didn't notice aw_session before. It doesn't look like
it'll help though. Unfortunately if a bot tries to teleport itself it doesn't seem to work. It doesn't return an error but nothing happens. The problem with setting AW_MY_X etc and using aw_state_change is that it's really a walk and if you move very far the bot looks ridiculous with its little legs flapping away. Especially if you don't turn it to face the direction of travel. If you move a great distance it's fast enough that people may not see it but medium distances are really funky. Norm [View Quote] Possible to teleport or warp a bot?Nov 18, 2005, 10:26pm
One solution might be to leave the world and do the move when you re-enter.
I don't think AW shows the first move since it doesn't have a starting position. Unfortunately that will screw up my bookeeping and I'll have to process a bunch of 'add avatar' events when I come back. [View Quote] Possible to teleport or warp a bot?Nov 18, 2005, 10:37pm
I wouldn't call it a flaw. For normal movement it's exactly what you want.
But the purpose of warp is to do the same thing without all the flapping around, slowly enough for the player to enjoy the scnenery, and the purpose of teleport is to prevent the interpolation completely and appear instantaneous. A bot should really be able to do all three, except for the enjoying-the-scenery part. ;) [View Quote] Broken 'build' button in X1 survey mgrNov 26, 2005, 9:58am
I just loaded a project. The objects show up in the model list but when I
click the build button nothing happens. The button isn't greyed out as though it were disabled but it doesn't respond to a click. It's 3:00 AM and I'm probably doing something dumb. I've done this same thing a hundred times with no problem. Any ideas? I'm logged in to the correct world with full rights. Argh! StarfieldJun 29, 2003, 5:25am
I'd like to see an additional "cloud layer" that would be rendered before
the light source. When you use the current cloud layer for stars they render on top of your light source. A moon should block out stars. StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 5:19pm
Exactly
That's why we need something that works like a cloud layer but is drawn before the light source. Norm [View Quote] StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 5:30pm
Thanks for thinking this over but you're mistaken. The light source is
always drawn before the cloud layers, unless you check 'Draw light source in front'. This makes perfect sense if you *are* using them for clouds. You don't want the sun or moon to appear to be closer to you than the clouds. The nessesary default drawing order is... 1 starfield (the thing I'm asking for, works like a cloud layer) 2 light source 3,4,5 cloud layers 1,2,3 Perhaps the *most* useful solution would be to let the caretaker specify the drawing order of the current layers. Norm [View Quote] StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 8:10pm
If this were true it would be a bug as it would cause cloud layer 1 to work
incorrectly. Try turning off your light source and seeing if it really is hiding any stars. My world is under construction and all the objects are sitting on my computer. You wouldn't see anything. Norm [View Quote] StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 8:20pm
Correction, I've got enough stuff on the server to illustrate my point.
The world is "T-1" Norm [View Quote] StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 8:28pm
Ok, I've got it. It depends on whether you use a mask or not. If I delete
the entry in the mask field it behaves as you described. Norm [View Quote] StarfieldJun 30, 2003, 8:58pm
The problem is using the picture itself as a mask. It gives you translucent
areas where the stars show through. I've uploaded a real mask and everything seems to be working. However, I still don't understand why a cloud layer should be behind the moon. Thanks for helping me nail this down. I can get exactly the effect I'm after. Who needs three layers of clouds anyway? Norm [View Quote] Multiple light sourcesJun 29, 2003, 5:27am
Can't have multiple moons, or a moon and a sun, in the sky at the same time.
Compound facer, non-facerJul 4, 2003, 5:18pm
I'd like to be able to create an object that was only part facer.
Example: A modeled tree trunk with facer(s) for the clumps of leaves. Currently if any part of an object is a facer, the whole thing is. I would suggest only doing this with Truespace scene files (*.scn) This would avoid creating bugs in older objects. Norm 1 meter terrainJul 10, 2003, 9:51pm
I'd like an option to have terrain that was one meter square.
I'm finding myself going back to modular ground because of the big chunks and I love the way terrain works otherwise. Norm 1 meter terrainJul 11, 2003, 4:55am
Would the performance hit be worse than using modular ground to get the same
resolution? If not, then I'd like the option. It's got to be more expensive to render modular ground. Norm [View Quote] AWGate needs a scatter bot...Jul 4, 2003, 5:25pm
I don't think you need a bot to do this. A little tricky stuff with some
warp panels should do the job. It wouldn't really be random but it would seem to be to the visitors. Norm AWGate needs a scatter bot...Jul 4, 2003, 6:09pm
At each intersection the panels would be in pairs with "Move" commands
shifting them back and forth. Of course that means enabling special commands in AWGATE. Norm [View Quote] AWGate needs a scatter bot...Jul 4, 2003, 7:41pm
