Re: 5 More day, till Christmas!

Dec 21, 2002, 1:50am
Hi Jacob. Could you please not post in HTML unless it's necessary? HTML is when you use graphics and such as you did in this post, but unfortunately some newsreaders don't support HTML and posting in it is generally frowned upon.

Also, I think you are a bit confused about subjects/headers. It is a very easy mistake to make. In the subject, RE: means that the post is a reply to another post. So, when starting a new discussion, or thread, as it is called, you do not need to enter RE: into the subject. All posts made in response to the starting post are prefixed with RE:.

Welcome to the newsgroups,
Shred

Asking Agent1 to lighten up is requesting a drastic personality change. It just isn't possible without major modifications... namely severe intoxication.

Besides, do you really want to see what would happen if Agent1 was drunk?

Think about it for a while.

If you're referring to the post that you replied to (3e058e48 at server1.Activeworlds.com) upon which Maki directed you to "lighten up", I don't see how it was intended to be funny, nor do I see how "lightening up" has anything to do with humor at all. "Lightening up" has to do with not taking things more seriously than the given situation demands... obviously not your strong suit.

Jacob and the others were politely (and by some not so politely) asked not to post in HTML several times - more than enough to get the point across to anyone with a working mindset. Continuing to discourage and re-explain why not to post in HTML is redundant. If you feel that you must continue to discourage these wee mortals of their blatantly incorrect use of the all-important newsgroups, please feel free to take it to e-mail.

Tom (Flagg) is leaving AW

Jan 27, 2003, 8:49pm
Flagg is leaving?! No! AW just isn't AW without Flagg being around. Besides the possible exception of Roland, Flagg has been the most active AWI figure in the community. Those two, along with Facter (though short-lived), always seemed to answer every telegram and e-mail no matter how many they got or how busy they were. They went the extra mile.

'tis a sad day for Active Worlds.

I know that he's still here (how can you miss him? =)). I only meant to say that he is no longer employed by AWI, Inc. We've lost our "inside man", our ambassador sent into Goober's metaphorical ivory tower. It was hoped that HamFon was going to fill that role when he first started with AWI, but unfortunately he, too was silenced by the confines of the great ivory tower.

Alpha Prime aka AW, objects and textures

Mar 5, 2003, 12:42am
Erm... no. The reason specifying an alternate directory to 'models' (ie: ../avatars/bleh.rwx) doesn't work in AW is because those objects aren't declared in its object registry, and hence they result in the oh-so-reliable Building Inspector promptly reporting that 'only registered objects may be used for construction'.

Gate Censorship Totally Unnescessary

Mar 14, 2003, 2:43am
I think you misunderstand the first amendment of the Constitution. It only states the following:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Privately owned (and internationally used, in this case) forums do not fall under jurisdiction of the first amendment.

Gate Censorship Totally Unnescessary

Mar 18, 2003, 1:53am
I am inclined to agree that AWGate is not the proper place to stage controversial political or religious debate. In a vastly international setting, emotions are too easily flared when conversation drifts towards these controversial areas.

It is easy to find support for my argument. I assume that you haven't missed the 'American Support' threads in general.discussion and worldbuilders. Do you see how even an innocent posting can get out of hand so quickly? The conflict exampled here is escalated by the fact that the users of this newsgroup come from so many different places, all of whom with differing opinions and views.

It is important to realize the distinction between disagreement and debate. The rules of AWGate do not deny the right to disagree - and even do not infringe upon polite, nondisrupting arguement - but state only that AWGate is not the proper place for *debate* (1. A discussion in which reasons are advanced for and against some proposition or proposal, 2. The formal presentation of and opposition to a stated proposition (usually followed by a vote)).

AWGate's function and purpose is to farmiliarize new users with the Active Worlds software, nothing more. The efficiency of this process would be greatly hampered were such debates allowed in AWGate. The resulting confusion would be madness for new users to sort through.

This is a classic example of a very complicated solution to a surprisingly simple problem. As a matter of fact, the solution is so simple that even the politically inept AWI had the wisdom to enact it:

Don't allow controversial debate in AWGate at all, and the potential difficulties that would ensue are avoided entirely!

And, as the King has already pointed out, there are already designated places in AW to facilitate debate without having to go to the effort of making such drastic modifications to an already functional AWGate. If it isn't broken, then by all means, please don't do so by 'fixing' it :P

A civil debate? Not quite. I never said that it was a flame war, but to say that it was a proper debate is just moronic.

If I recall correctly, even you lost your "civility" on several occasions.

1. This idiocy belongs in general.discussion
2. Stop steering topics in directions that are totally unrelated to the subject at hand.
3. There are already enough threads to filter in enough groups to go around for everyone. Don't turn this thread into yet another one.

If you (or others - I am not focusing this post at only you) feel that you must contaminate Community with your political hogwash, then E N Z O should just kill this thread before it gets out of hand.

They spread like a damned virus...

Someone REALLY lost the plot

May 2, 2003, 7:29pm
This is so idiotic that it's almost laughable.

Allow me to elaborate:

* Most of AW's user base is made up of youth.
* Youth usually don't like places that play big-brother.
* Upon seeing that message, most youth would turn away without looking back.
* This is not AOL.

The decision to use that particular welcome message was no doubt meant to assuage those very few paranoid parents who think that their children can't fend for themselves on the Internet. Most sensible parents, however, have enough faith in their skill as a parent to trust their kids online without constant supervision. If you can't trust your kid on something as inane as the Internet, then how do you expect them to cope with the real world once mommy isn't there to guide them?

Regardless of the message being sent, this disclaimer would be more well-suited in the EULA (which I'm pretty sure it's in there, anyway...). So if it's legal trouble that AWI is trying to avoid, then they're either going about it exactly the wrong way or being overly redundant. Hardly surprising.

I can only say what I have observed. In any case, a large portion of the AW userbase *IS* irrefutably youth. Whether or not this group makes up the majority of the population really isn't crucial when you consider how small our community is. Do you really think we can afford to lose a major portion of our population?
