Correction: the $160 R9500 is not an ATi retail card. It's a "powered by" card manufactured by Sapphire Technology Ltd.

Tom (Flagg) is leaving AW

Jan 27, 2003, 8:49pm
Flagg is leaving?! No! AW just isn't AW without Flagg being around. Besides the possible exception of Roland, Flagg has been the most active AWI figure in the community. Those two, along with Facter (though short-lived), always seemed to answer every telegram and e-mail no matter how many they got or how busy they were. They went the extra mile.

'tis a sad day for Active Worlds.

I know that he's still here (how can you miss him? =)). I only meant to say that he is no longer employed by AWI, Inc. We've lost our "inside man", our ambassador sent into Goober's metaphorical ivory tower. It was hoped that HamFon was going to fill that role when he first started with AWI, but unfortunately he, too was silenced by the confines of the great ivory tower.

Space Ship Columbia

Feb 3, 2003, 3:22am
Space is a very, very large place. No one quite knows what's out there... except for a potentially unlimited amount of resources, energy, and colonization space. Infinity reaps all possibilities.

However, this is of no importance: what is more important to the present is that the international space program actually force some of our petty governments to work together because they wish to achieve a solitarily unreachable goal. Even the almighty United States has its economical limits. Scientific communities have often overlooked the boundaries of nationality in the name of knowledge, but none have done it to a greater degree than space programs (excluding the Cold War, of course). The International Space Station, and the international space program in general, is a symbol of peace and greater international cooperation - a trademark of the ideals of the United Nations, if you will.

Mankind always unites in the face of a great danger that threatens the entire species, but it can also unify to reach a common dream. Man can never resist a question, and the mysteries of the stars have plagued his mind for thousands of years.

Among potential peace in the name of space, exploration offers benefits for generations to come. The European powers (Spain, Portugal, France, England...) lost many lives in the name of exploration. It took many years to reap the benefits of their labors and woes. But in the end, a whole new world had been discovered and new cultures sprouted and grew.

If you're asking for instant results, then you will have to keep asking in vain. These kinds of endeavors take generations. It is most likely that you and I will never see the outcome of this particular trek.

But Columbus never lived to see the Americas claimed under European rule, Magellan didn't live to make around the world, Amelia Earhart didn't aerially circumnavigate the world. The first steps are always the toughest, but they have to be made by someone.

This link was given to me by Tony M. There are several parts during the clip where the editing is quite obvious - deriving 'arse' from 'arsenal', for example. I'm not trying to be anti-American here; I just appreciate good humor.

On the index, under 'Featured micro sites' you will see a picture of Mr. Bush. Clicking that picture will direct you to http://www.thesmokehammer.com/

There you will find a QuickTime video and several different formats of the audio clip. I'm guessing that that is the video clip you saw.

As to where Tony originally heard of the file, however, I don't know.

You mean because Mozilla and other browsers tend to stick more closely to HTML standards while Microsoft basically invents their own language? They create browser specific code to purposely discourage the use of other browsers. Those are the "compatibility" issues that you refer to.

If you have any illusions to the otherwise, then you might find this of interest:

Leo,

One thing I have learned over much trial and trepidation (of which consisted mostly of trying in utter futility to explain to Macintosh users why their chosen product is in fact synonymous to all that is evil) is that you should not argue with the pleasantly - or in some cases, not so pleasantly - delusional. I suggest you apply the same in this case.

Translation: ignore him and he will eventually go away. It may take some number of years, but at some point he will become bored and find some other unfortunate soapbox to stand upon. You may have observed by this point - and, if not, listen and learn - that Goober King loves to argue. Thus if you do not wish to engage in an argument of such astounding frivolity as to provoke otherwise happy blades of grass to commit mass suicide, I suggest you smile and nod your head in an enlightened fashion.

PS: A spell-checker alone would work about as well on your post as a BB-gun would be of assistance when attempting to write a sonnet.

[View Quote] Fortunately for the majority of the human race, most bars don't come equipped with Internet access; and, if they do, the type of people you mention are usually too drunk to be able to discern the difference between a toad and an eighteen-wheeler, much less able to use a computer other than a Macintosh.

This 'typing style' thing you mention completely baffles me. In no way can the word 'style' (or even 'fashion' for that matter) be applied to the abomination of keystrokes that we lovingly refer to as the Internet persona BinaryBud.

In contrast, however, he makes Pokemon Web and NOVA look like grammarian gods.

Someone REALLY lost the plot

May 2, 2003, 7:29pm
This is so idiotic that it's almost laughable.

Allow me to elaborate:

* Most of AW's user base is made up of youth.
* Youth usually don't like places that play big-brother.
* Upon seeing that message, most youth would turn away without looking back.
* This is not AOL.

The decision to use that particular welcome message was no doubt meant to assuage those very few paranoid parents who think that their children can't fend for themselves on the Internet. Most sensible parents, however, have enough faith in their skill as a parent to trust their kids online without constant supervision. If you can't trust your kid on something as inane as the Internet, then how do you expect them to cope with the real world once mommy isn't there to guide them?

Regardless of the message being sent, this disclaimer would be more well-suited in the EULA (which I'm pretty sure it's in there, anyway...). So if it's legal trouble that AWI is trying to avoid, then they're either going about it exactly the wrong way or being overly redundant. Hardly surprising.

I can only say what I have observed. In any case, a large portion of the AW userbase *IS* irrefutably youth. Whether or not this group makes up the majority of the population really isn't crucial when you consider how small our community is. Do you really think we can afford to lose a major portion of our population?

I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. AWI saw that we were offended by the welcome message, and so they changed it to something we weren't. It looks like a good compromise to me; I wouldn't ask for anything more.

B: That's a feature, not a bug.
