Just a little note about ICQ2001b

Nov 23, 2001, 2:06am
Actually, in my opinion ICQ is the most powerful and feature-packed IM
program available. I use AIM only because my friends use AOL and AIM, and
ICQ has more features than AIM...and its not made by some evil company
(which probably uses the service to spy on you) like MSN Messenger
(Microsoft! Eeeeevil!). All you need is a firewall and a couple minutes to
run through your preferences.

3.3 features

Nov 28, 2001, 6:45pm
Welp at least its getting somewhere. The two things I'd like to see:
1) 3-plane rotation WITH registries
2) Fixed move/rotate commands so they DON'T encroach.

Then i'll be überhappy (alt + 0252 me)
Now just to install a refrigderation system on my processor and video card
:-D NO MORE FANS FOR ME! Only the hum of the compressor :-D

OE = best thing I have...and it shows all the file sizes for me...beats the
mailreader that comes with netscape 6.0 anyways (I live for tree-views and
all these features) plus once I figure out how to get my PGP encryption
going it gets integrated ^_^

PC Refridgeration

Nov 28, 2001, 6:45pm
Just wondering...how could I go about setting up something like a
refrigerator that only cools my hottest objects (i.e. CPU, north bridge,
video GPU) so that I don't get condensation and have to deal with my stuff
shorting and breaking...what sort of chemical(s) would/should/can I use to
cool the thing...and I assume that a mini-fridge compressor can handle it...

anyways if I screw up my system i'll just replace the parts with new ones
:-D 'bout time I get one of those Athlon XP 1800+'s...yeah right...so
anyways if I did do this (i'm actually trying to see if I can eliminate fans
because since my computer is in a cabinet it doesn't get much airflow, and
really heats up if I get into playing day-long intense 3d gaming sprees)
what parts would I need to cool (I'm assuming my CPU and GPU because they
have fans on them so they must need cooling, and possibly my north bridge
chip) and is there some way that I could wire up my comp so that I don't
accidentally forget to turn on the fridge pump? I don't wanna melt all this
stuff :-P

Any guides would help too :D

MSIE Issues

Nov 28, 2001, 7:03pm
If I load up MSIE and enter a URL like: "yahoo.com" it gives me that error
popup with the "send bug report" button and everything...then I have to
reboot my comptuer or else I get one about every minute until my computer
locks up.

I beleive the same things happen if I go to a subdomain URL without entering
http:// (like entering "shopping.yahoo.com").

I noticed this after I installed the *cough*leaked*cough* drivers for my ATI
Radeon, and also after I installed MSIE 6.0
I uninstalled MSIE (yeah I figured out how to do that crudely if you want to
downgrade) and put 5.5 SP2 back on...I still have the problem. Running in
Winblows 98 SE (I'm *NOT* going to XP until the ability of my computer to
run depends on it!)

If anyone knows why this is happening or how I can fix it...reply >_<

MSIE Issues

Nov 29, 2001, 1:08am
Actually... I've done this before. I searched through my registry and found
all of the strings relating to IE...and I threw them out. Then I deleted the
program files. Now of course there will be small remnants in some core
windows files (most likely...but I don't want to fool around with those) but
the program is essentially gone. To downgrade I just deleted the program
files and its registry entries...then I downloaded MSIE 5.5 SP2...and in the
about window it does read "version 5.5..."

this is driveing me nutz

Dec 1, 2001, 3:18pm
My guess would probably go with the rest of the people: your drive(s) could
be defective.

I had the same problem with my computer after I took it to the shop. My
CD-ROM drive started making really odd noises...so I took it out and
replaced it with my trusty old 32x, no problems. My guess is that because my
comp got jostled around in the trunk of our car something in the CD-ROM got
screwed up.

As for your hard drive...its very possible that it could be worn or
defective. What brand is it and how big is it? Last time we had a Maxtor (a
few years ago) a screw came loose and fatally damaged the $100+ drive. In my
comp I have a 30GB Western Digital. Somehow while formatting I lost 2GB of
space but thats probably just a DOS sector or something (I manually did the
formatting, but about 28GB is good enough for me). When did the "black hole"
(I guess you could call it that) begin? Some hard drives just lose GB of
space for no reason (like mine) and also some manufacturers round up with
the size (though probably not by 3GB...thats a lot of data to say exists
when it really doesn't).

Help - Windows Defrag

Dec 3, 2001, 7:08pm
Or...if you're feeling really daring...try this: (I've done it before on my
comp...nothing big happens, at least for me...but its best that you have a
reset button on your computer)

Boot your machine normally into Windows.
Open the system.ini file.
Search for "shell=".
Change shell=explorer to shell=defrag.exe (Or whatever program you choose.
If you want to use a program that does not reside in a standard Windows
directory, you must include the path using the DOS 8.3 filename format:
"c:progra~1winampwinamp.exe").
Reboot your machine. It will boot into Windows using the program you
specified.

To change your shell back to Explorer:

Reboot your machine into a command prompt.
Type "edit" (a DOS-based text editing program), and reverse the steps.
Change shell=defrag.exe back to shell=explorer.exe.
Save the file and exit the program.
Reboot your machine.

Yeah....and theres enough proof that it is destructive. I heard about it
from my dad (he's subscribed to McAffee's thing) and then later from one of
my TechTV newsletters....I must be scared tho (I have mIRC, ICQ, and Outlook
Express here...perfect target me >_<) because I had this dream that I was on
ICQ and I got this message from someone and then I left the message open too
long and it unleashed the virus on my comp. Of course I know its spread thru
e-mail but I've heard it goes thru ICQ too.

looking for programing language

Dec 8, 2001, 10:59pm
well from what I've heard, VB is pretty easy. I've looked at Delphi and I've
seen VB before...they seem to be relatively the same setup (but I don't know
about the commands)...and C++ is supposed to be the most powerful but its
also supposed to be very confusing.

But I'm no programmer.

Dec 8, 2001, 10:49pm
3. Has your child asked for new hardware?

"Computer hackers are often limited by conventional computer hardware. They
may request "faster" video cards, and larger hard drives, or even more
memory. If your son starts requesting these devices, it is possible that he
has a legitimate need. You can best ensure that you are buying legal,
trustworthy hardware by only buying replacement parts from your computer's
manufacturer."
LMAO! "I'm a hacker...I need to buy a new Geforce3 because...I'm gonna break
into the Pentagon and their computers are graphics-intensive (that and I
wanna get the best FPS in counterstrike!)

"If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD",
this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make
inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child
labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately
disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel,
use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will
most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not
buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are
to have any hope of raising him well."
Good God man! I've been insulted. lol.

make sense to put it there too? Or maybe its a sign AWC doesn't want to look
there and see what crazy ideas we're planning (hint hint, look at my idea

Even if you got a modem...it still needs to be activated by your ISP. Plus
you'll have a dynamic IP and be easier to track.

Not to mention sharing bandwidth with everyone else in your neighborhood
(hope you don't have any people who like to download 400MB files while
downloading MP3s and surfing the internet in 4 browsers!)

VROOM VROOM! The fastest....

Dec 16, 2001, 2:09pm
Yeah the 1900+ definately is nice....and I read that a guy overclocked his
1800+ to 1.9GHz (it beat the living heck outta the p4s in sandra
benchmarks), so you could possibly put a 1900+ up to 2Ghz and save yourself
$100-$200 over buying a P4.

RAM? I don't really know lots about that...other than SDRAM is $30 for 512MB
now (1 GB here I come!)

As for mobos...I personally like the MSI K7266A Pro2 board. A good site for
mobos and such: http://www.anandtech.com
I have a FIC mobo....and they took the info off their site...plus they
include obviously translated manuals that don't explain anything about what
the BIOS features do, and also when updating your bios they say "check the
version number" but I have yet to find where they put it.

Case: Aluminum cases are quite expensive. (I think the cheapest Lian-Li is
like $131 for MicroATX 2 5.25" bays, 2 3.5" bays, and an internal 3.5") But
if you don't want to spend that much money, I like the InWin S500. Not the
A500, I use that now and its a pain to work with. Just beware of the
purple-button cases....Oh yeah... http://www.directron.com has a lot of
caes, and I think they have one called the IG4000 or something....you can
put up to 4 8cm fans in there.

For sound cards...Yeah I agree with builderz. Creative Labs cards are pretty
cool. I use a SoundBlaster Live! MP3+ 5.1 now, it comes with some pretty
cool software too (music mixing, song creating, midi composing, other
stuff). And I think that the MP3+ is one of the cheaper Live!s so if an
Audigy is out of the question (Aren't they $70+?) then you can look at the
Live!'s.
