There's the same problem with move and rotate. Perhaps the world server
could set a "Maximum Scale Factor" for the world, as in no objects can be
scaled more than x times the original size.

I think if AW had support for Ogg Vorbis files then it would be a lot easier
to builders who want to put long music/sound files into their builds to do
so. I have a 2 minute long song that is only about 840k at the lowest
quality level of Ogg, and it sounds like it was encoded close to 128kbps MP3
(to compare the two, that same song in MP3 has to be compressed to 64kbps,
which sounds pretty bad, to come close to Ogg). Ogg Vorbis is open source,
so I don't think AWI would have to pay any licensing fees or anything. Heck,
maybe they could even figure out a way to make it seamlessly loop like wave
files so we can have a compressed audio format for ambient
humming/effects/music. Not sure about everyone else but I know that when I
try to loop an MP3 in AW there's a very noticable pause as it "rewinds."
Just my $0.02,

I don't usually build in worlds with terrain so I'm not terribly affected,
but if alphaworld ever gets terrain and this isn't fixed then building would
be a bit more difficult.

One of the biggest quirks I've had with AW's new GUI is the tabs window. I
hate having to either block out parts of the view/chat windows to have my
tabs open, or have the web window open on the side so the tabs won't block
anything. Can we please at least get an OPTION to have the older GUI where
tabs were built-in and not a seperate, floating window?
-CMM
Feb 25, 2005, 2:29am
Yeah, that and somehow when a window isn't maximized I always close the one
behind it when I click in the upper right corner of my screen...
I just don't see how it could be too difficult to add a checkbox in the
options that just makes the tabs part of the browser window again, instead
of a seperate window.

One of the biggest pros that OpenGL mode has over DirectX mode is that
OpenGL can software render as many lights as the browser sees. However,
since OpenGL performs worse (at least for me) and has terrible-looking
skyboxes (visible seams), it would be nice to have the software-rendered
lighting in DirectX mode, so we get the best of both worlds :) It just looks
awful when I walk through a heavily-lit area, and half the lighting doesnt
get rendered.

Not to mention SI is just an example of what you can do with 4.1, once it
gets released to the public, people will be coming up with much better/more
complex ways of working with the commands, which hopefully the beta team
will do to catch the bugs that'll surely result...

Alright, this is a long post about a feature that's a complete shot in the
dark, but I just thought it would be a great addition to the community...
What I thought would be a great feature for worlds under 4.1 is something
like an "empowered" zone. 4.1 adds zones, which are small areas that allow
the builder to control quite a few environmental effects regardless of the
world settings. The "empowered" zone is basically this idea on steriods,
only instead of being created by an object, it is created by the world
caretaker. This sort of zone would be set on the server, perhaps regardless
of height so that basically everything in a rectangle between point x and
point y is controlled by citizens who are set as zone CTs by the world CT.
These special zones would not only be able to control the environmental
effects 4.1 zones control, but also would be able to change backdrop and
grant citizens some special rights like public speaker, eminent domain, and
"zone eject." I think that this would be an excellent feature for
communities in large building worlds like AlphaWorld like OffWorld, Horizon
City (if it was still active), or SW City, where they would be basically
given the ability to police their own communities and deal with vandals,
disputes, and troublemakers without having to wait for PKs or GET to deal
with it. There have been many experiences I've had in my past in SW City in
which having the ability to "zone eject" someone from the city would be
handy (basically a zone eject just bans the user from that particular zone
for x amount of time, with a max set by the world CT. Instead of kicking the
troublemaker from the world, it just bumps them back to GZ). I'm sure other
folks who have been in charge of communities before have also wished they
could do the same.
I think that this would also solve a couple disputes in AlphaWorld, too,
such as the "raging" debates over things like changing the world backdrop or
ambient lighting. If a community wants a day/night cycle, they can allow a
bot to control their zone and make it happen. For folks who aren't in that
zone, they just see the default AW settings. Likewise for the backdrop, if
the community wants to change the backdrop, maybe even use a skybox, then
they can. Folks who want to see AW in the state its been in over the past
years wouldn't be affected unless AWI changes the setting. I mean, for the
most part we can use add-ons like AWE to change the backdrop and emulate
night time (our "night mod" which came out around halloween), or even make
seasons (winter mod), so this would just make it easier for communties to
customize the way people see their little area of the world.
There of course would be limits. Obviously, one of these special zones could
not change object paths, cell data limit, enable/disable terrain, or maybe
change the ground object. The world CT would have control over every zone in
the world, so world rules can still be enforced. These zones would only be
granted to communities which have shown that they'll be active and growing
members of the community...basically towns that have grown to acheive quite
some size and probably have enough land to contain any new growth for at
least 6-12 months. This is basically just a check to make sure that this
community is "worthy" of being granted a zone (which makes it sort of a goal
for communities to strive for, which may help spur growth), and also to make
sure that they wont be constantly bugging the world CT with "ok we've
expanded our town outside of the zone, please extend it." The only big
problem I see is just setting the zone so that only the cities are under the
influence of the zone. I'll use SW City as an example just because I'm most
familiar with it. We have the Irenic Ocean as our border with the rest of
the world, so our zone would be marked by that. There are small communties
along the outside of the Irenic, and out of fairness to them, the zone
wouldn't envelop those small communities (this would prevent large towns
from engulfing small towns and deleting them to make room for expansion and
abuses like that). Basically once an avatar steps foot in our city limits,
what they see is governed by how our zone is set. Of course, if a town is
abusing its power, the community will basically shun it, and nobody will go
there. If nobody goes there, there are no more abuses (since a zone CT
obviously can't delete objects anywhere in the world), and then the zone
falls stagnant, and eventually gets stripped of its status as a zone.
I really think that this would make large towns 10x more appealing, as when
you look at a town like SW City, it would cost thousands to have our own
world, which is the only real surefire way we have of keeping the peace in
the city on our own, and these zones would not only make us able to use AW's
great environmental features to our advantage but also make it much easier
for us to make sure that people in our city do not get harassed.
Unfortunately, I don't think that the browser will ever get this, but it
would just be so nice if it did...
Please share your thoughts,
-CMM

I know how to head a room in the winter, overclock your CPU to 5x its normal
speed (or the max, whatever comes first), put your video card HS/F next to
it, and put a big exhaust fan in, the air passing through the CPU (esp. a
T-Bird) should get warm and toasty :)

1. Begin to install Windows XP RC2
2. Wait until the setup is about to begin, then quit.
3. Wait 2 weeks leaving the installer files on your machine.
4. Install Tribes 2 and tinker with your video card settings.
After 3 weeks your windows should only be able to boot 1 time per power-on
in 640x480 resolution with 16 colors in normal mode.
Steps to make it out for 2 weeks:
1. Take it to a shop that says it will be done in 1 week.
2. Wait the 2 weeks it takes for them to wait before doing it (while getting
bumped down from 2nd to 3rd on the list).
3. Take it home after paying $30 to hear you need to reformat.
Steps to wear out your hard drive:
1. Reformat, install windows, and it will be screwed because your drivers
suck with DirectX (goddamn DDHELP FAULTS!)
2. Reformat, put NIC drivers on first. Try to update video card drivers from
the net after installing them. Get DDHELP FAULT when trying to update them.
4. Use crappy computer for a week.
5. Delete the partition, format it manually, install windows, install NIC
drivers, download latest standard ATI drivers, download dx 8.0a, install
drivers, install DX 8.0a, presto.
Now my computer works. I can use AW and play Half Life. I am happy :D

My Motto: If something is wrong with your computer, tell me what it is and
I'll give you 3 ways to make it stop working.

Wow, this is the biggest post I've ever made! (now that I check it 3 weeks
later)
BTW guys, I built this machine from the ground up and it worked for 6
months, so excuse me for try beta software. (back then of course I thought
XP was cool :P)

yeah unless your video card supports opengl, that mode sucks. But since for
me on D3D mode glass will disappear and certain object faces too I have to
suffer through not being able to see other people's chat above their
face...lmao and in windows XP RC2 half life looks best in OpenGL mode (in
d3d mode every other line is black O_O)...random quote that.

>_< But as of now, its just a message that appears once. And its not bad or
anything, just a little "welcome to ActiveWorlds" thing. And in any world
the owner could use his/her own bot to change the world welcome every 10
minutes. If it does get bad, then we should all complain, but as it is now
its not really something that can be too annoying. I just see the little
"welcome to activeworlds" line pop up once and then it gets replaced with
chat.
And KAH, don't give them any ideas >_< LOL. Not like they all really check
the NGs anyways.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing...My sis had a fridge from her dorm. If
she doesn't want it and my other sis doesn't want it...I'll take out the
compressor and cool my PC with it. Don't refridgerators use freon?
Heres another thing: cool it with anti-freeze? just hope that the pipes
don't leak lol.

Uhhh...I watched a guy hack into another guy's computer and plant a backdoor
on it on TechTV, all they do is connect thru DOS, plant the backdoor
program, and then reboot your machine. Now the backdoor is installed and is
running and any hacker using a client program for that backdoor can break in
and do whatever they want.
