A simple program to audible announce visitors?

Mar 11, 2001, 5:26pm
Is there a program available to create an audible sound when a visitor arrives
in a world?

When a visitor arrives it would create a sound that can be heard by everyone
nearby. This would work even when the browser window is minimised.
It would help world owners know quickly when someone has arrived.

Sounds good Xelag :)

I had tried using your bot before but I didn't see that feature. I assume you
mean that the wav is only heard on the PC running the bot? If so that would
help a lot. Is your bot "happy" to run alongside HamBot?

Thanks for the reply,

Hambot scripts

Having struggled and RTFM for hours i'm still mystified by Hambot scripts. Too
much magic not enough basic examples.

Does anyone have some really basic scripts that actually work? All i'm trying to
do is make a bot that welcomes visitors, answers a few questions, logs when ppl
arrive and leave, and says goodbye.

Technical newsgroup

Mar 13, 2001, 7:22pm
Since the beta group was closed I think there has been a need for a newsgroup
for technical discussions, especially about the browser.

The worldbuilders group is fine for server talk, and the bot and sdk groups
cover their areas well, but for general tech talk there is only a choice
between here and the community newsgroup. In the GOD (good old days) the
beta group was open and visited by the AW tech staff, problems and questions
were raised and answered and it was a mine of information. Now we have almost
nothing and no central place for discussions :(

Please let's either have the beta group open or a new technical newsgroup asap.

ps. Does anyone know if the 3.1 browser is compatitble with DirectX8 under
Win98SE?

Therapy World will be open from 7 am VRT on the 4 November 2000.

Therapy is a world in which health professionals voluntarily assist people to
optimize their health status and their understanding of mental health. Anyone
interested in counselling or therapy services is most welcome to visit the
world.

Web pages are available here that describe in detail the services that Therapy
World has to offer the AW community.

To filter in Netscape with its great builtin newsreader:

o from the top menu select Edit / Message Filters / New

o then select either sender or subject, matching type, and the keyword

o finally select the filter action: delete or mark etc.

Note that you can have filters for each newsgroup; a very powerful tool :)

User dismissal vote

Feb 8, 2001, 9:43pm
I fully appreciate your concern about the often abusive and ad hominem attacks
made by several posters in this newsgroup. However I fundamentally disagree with
this approach to the problem. My concern is where will this stop. This group is
meant to be an open forum for uncensored discussion of community matters; it is
*vital* that no censorship or banishment be imposed unless called for by a
majority of the posters, and with all respect by the users of this ng, not by
the administrative staff. Newsgroups thrive on arguments and flames, part of
the energy of AW comes from such clashes. Historically, and I write here as
someone who has posted in newsgroups for over ten years, it has been shown
to be more effective to either ignore such bad behaviour or if you can't
stomach it, to *filter* it.

In any case why is it necessary to organise such a personal attack on Eep,
curiously similar in nature to that which you rightfully condemn him for in
the first place? Perhaps it is some mistaken sense of loyalty to fellow
employees who have been the victims of his sharp words? By all means
vigorously criticise Eep, but *please* do not organise a witch hunt.

Please withdraw this proposal before you start to destroy what remains of the
the community.

No Confidence Vote

Feb 8, 2001, 11:23pm
This post is to vote upon the dismissal of the AWCI Management.

The board of directors has been a source of continuous embarrassment.

The directors have been given many avenues to redeem themselves in the eyes
of the newsgroup community, and have been given many opportunities to show
themselves a decent, productive and respectful members thereof.

Thus, it is the wish of the AW community, to put forth a vote to have the
the current management removed for the foreseeable future.

Votes are to be cast as one of two choices

To have the management remain, please vote as:
<citizen name - number> -"Stay"

To vote to have them removed, please vote:
<citizen name - number> - "Remove".

In making your decision, please review recent past performance by these people,
and use it to make your best judgment on the matter, namely:

1. Failure to create shareholder value.
2. Inability to attract new customers.
3. Technical incompetence as demonstrated by recent failures in Eduverse
and Alphaworld.
4. Poor quality products and late delivery of enhancements.
5. Unacceptable customer relations and sales support.
6. Inadequate response to customer complaints.
7. Hiring of unskilled support staff.

As the initiator of this vote, I begin the tally by casting my own, as an
Active worlds citizen.

Takeover 305600 - Remove.

The voting has begun.

(This is not a joke haha)

Is this really a moderated newsgroup?

Feb 10, 2001, 11:31am
I have been reading and even posting now and then in the AW newsgroups since
1999. The recent debacle over banishment of a fellow citizen made me aware
for the first time that a charter exists for this newsgroup and that this group
is "moderated"!

It is standard practice in Usenet, and i would hope it will be implemented here,
to regularly post the charter for newbies to familiarize themselves with the
group protocol. A monthly posting would be sufficient.

As the charter appeared before i became a citizen perhaps the "moderator" would
like to inform me and other newbies about the process used to approve the
charter, how many people voted in favour etc.

It is very curious that there is no indication of any path to the moderators
return address or any approval field. If this is the case then it appears that
AWCI have failed to moderate this newsgroup and are in breech of the charter.

Is this really a moderated newsgroup?
