reason code describing the specific problem with the login.

Build 20 of the SDK is now available for download from
www.activeworlds.com/sdk. This update to the 3.1 SDK provides a new version
of the aw_world_list() method that can handle world lists longer than 750
worlds.

AW_EVENT_OBJECT_ADD/AW_EVENT_OBJECT_DELETE SEQUENCE

May 9, 2001, 5:11pm
This issue was just brought to my attention.

The SDK docs are (were) wrong. Sorry about that. How embarrassing! The
correct
event sequence is ADD followed by DELETE.

worldbuilders & objectmakers UNITE!: single object refresh petition

Just a quick note, checksums are not effective against preventing cracked
browsers (whether it be 1, 2, or 10 checksums). Anyone hacking the browser
can simply disable the checksum code as well...piece of cake.

The general problem of preventing hacked clients is called "Operational Code
Authentication" and is widely recognized to be unsolvable. If you put a lot
of work into it, you can make it slightly more difficult to hack browsers,
but you can never make it impossible, any solution you implement can still
be easily disabled or bypassed by a hacker. The problem is, your client's
executable code is on their machine, and so by definition they have full
access to it. Using process editors or disassemblers, and given enough
time, they can reverse engineer any algorithm or change any code in the
browser. In short, there is no series of bits or bytes that the server can
send back and forth over the wire that can somehow verify that the browser
that is talking back to it is "official" or "hacked."

For one interesting discussion of the general issue of OCA and why it is
impossible to solve, see:

AW 3.1 Beta FAQ uploaded

Jan 15, 2001, 4:21pm
Corrections to the FAQ:

Q. When 3.1 is released, when can I first get it?

A. From the Active Worlds Download page.

Correction: When 3.1 is released, it will be available to all 3.0 users as
an automatic upgrade, the same as how beta users get it now. There will be
no requirement for a separate download and install. We only did this with
the 2.2 to 3.0 upgrade because of the new system requirements.

Q. What is the date for AW3.1 Public Beta Release and Final Release?

A. AW3.1 Public Beta - I was told 2 weeks after the closed beta began.
(Which was January 8th, 2000).

Correction: There is no official date for any public beta release. I may
have said something like "maybe a couple of weeks after the first beta" at
one point. I should really watch what I say. :)
