Common access to world databases

Jun 11, 2002, 6:55pm
It would be nice if all dump commands would work
without stopping the worlds.

hm, maybe that would work, not on the backup but on a
fresh copy, I should try cp. Thanks :)

RWX or action to switch between slide / climb

Jun 12, 2002, 4:20am
The new slide feature wasn't a bad idea, but causes
problems on some models that used to lead the avatar
up. It would be nice to switch it off for models or
individual objects, either with a #! command in the
RWX or with the action line.

RWX or action to switch between slide / climb

Jun 15, 2002, 2:30am
I want to revise my wish :

The new slide feature wasn't a bad idea, but causes
problems on SEVERAL models that used to lead the avatar
up. It would be nice to switch it ON for models or
individual objects, either with a #! command in the
RWX or with the action line.

Default should be the behaviour as it was before.

Slide Detection bug?

Jun 13, 2002, 3:31pm
Of course it can be fixed. Let the editors browser wait
for the cell update, like the browsers of all others do
that too. The cell will not be updated, if a wall cannot
be deleted

These messages are new since you scrolled back

Jun 14, 2002, 4:02am
Shouldn't that be announced by the guy who delivers the
telegrams, the operator, instead of the immigration officer?

I know this is a really bad bug (not 3.3 specific) and
instantly should be fixed, because it could cause trouble
with the ActiveWorkersCouncil ...

full text search in telegrams

Jun 22, 2002, 2:21am
Although this can be done by exporting the telegrams
to a text file, it would sometimes be nice to look
for something while you're online.

Regexp search would be even better of course.

World Refresh

Jun 25, 2002, 5:33pm
I know 2 ways that make the stuff continue to load :

The first one works if you replaced a model on the
object path : just write ../models/modelname.zip -
this at least helps to trick the cache once.

If you just want to get some triangles reloaded,
teleport to XYZ 0N 0W using the menu. This does not
always force loading to continue, but at least
sometimes.

It works better if you use the same browser for
several universes/galaxies - use a cached (though
not existing) world for the teleport target.

Sure I would prefer to be able to invalidate the
cache selectively too, but maybe this can help you
for a while.

Disable Glitter Kitty and Ambivalent for the NG

for a while at least.

Just a wish - they are annoying :(

Disable Glitter Kitty and Ambivalent for the NG

Jun 28, 2002, 4:49am
This isn't "one side that I don't like", but you miss-used
a CyAwards announcement for your PRIVATE wars.

Give it an own thread and I can ignore the thread. I do not
ignore a person.

Disable Glitter Kitty and Ambivalent for the NG

Jun 28, 2002, 3:52pm
It still goes on in the thread "Cy Nominations Officially Open!",
where it should not even have started. If you had conzerns you
could as well have sent them to Alphabit Phalpha in EMail, she
is a nice person and she would sure have agreed to meet you and
discuss it.

I started this thread with a wish - and it's still stand to
this wish.

Reading 200 or more hate posts in a thread that would have
interested me - not nice. If you would have continued it in
"your" thread, I wouldn't be mad about that - although I don't
like people fighting eachother - but I have seen more than one
flame war thread, and I somehow got used to it :(

If you want custom avatars, download some from oct31.de and
modify them, my stuff isn't as good as Insanity's, but maybe
you find something you like. I will not get involved in this
whole thing between Insanity and you, I will not take party,
although I know and respect Insanity. It's your and his problem.

My problem is just that I don't want to read those childish
accusations of you both anymore in a thread where it should
not be.

Tired of "unable to write data" messages

Couldn't the file transfer function finally be fixed ???

It should notify the RECEIVER that the directory he uses
for incoming files isn't valid, not the SENDER.

Idea:fill gap between tourists and citizens

Jul 1, 2002, 5:14am
Cheap citizenships with a limited monthly online time
for people who just visit randomly and just to keep
contact.

Maybe 15$ for 10 hours/month - about the same price
per minute that some call by call ISPs take.

I think this cannot be done with the current uniserver
but maybe a nice idea to bring in more people in one
of the next versions

Woah nice new feature.

Jul 2, 2002, 2:51am
In Beta they say it isn't an option :(

But some beta testers already complained, so it might
become an option before the final comes out. I hope
it too, the old style names above heads was fine for
me.

Defualt Terrain Texture Changability

Jul 5, 2002, 4:05pm
On NT you can make hardlinks too. FAR can do that for example
http://www.rarlab.com/, not sure if it works for other windows
versions too.

On a FAT file system it can be done with a disk editor, but I
cannot really recommend it, if you are not exactly aware of
what you're doing, because each chkdsk will report a lot of
problems, and if you allow chkdsk to fix it, it will destroy
stuff.

I want to kill slide detection

Jul 6, 2002, 2:24am
I don't like slide either. what about an RWX setting
#! SlideDetect off
or as a third collision state
#! Collision NoSlide

or in the action command

create slide no

Or better :

No slide is default (backwards compatibility),
and add the commands

#! Collision Slide

and/or

create slide

disable chat scroll with mouse

Jul 7, 2002, 4:18am
everytime I click into the chat window to
hilite text for copy, the chat window scrolls
to a random position.

This feature is 100% crap.

disable chat scroll with mouse

Jul 7, 2002, 5:11pm
Sometimes, when you click the very last line to set the
caret (blinking text cursor) into this line, it doesn't
scroll, sometimes it scrolls to somewhere in the middle
and sometimes to the top of the logged chat.

This, together with the bug that eep reported in beta -
hyperlinks still work behind the end of a line - make
it sometimes nearly impossible to hilite a line that
contains something that looks like a hyperlink.

.... but don't forget to optimize the RWX (consolidate clumps) before
you start. A tree with one clump for each tiny branch will freeze
AW quite "reliable" when it's added to the scene. It isn't fault
of the RWX format if the design is unnecessarily complex.

Maybe a "second level cache" would be the solution, preloading
one row of cells more than needed. This could happen with low
priority, but the stuff would already be in memory when it's
needed.

I doubt that this is a program change that can be done quick
though :-/

In order to write a converter, you don't need to have any special
developement environment or rendering software, you "just" need
to know the file specifications. RWX is well documented.

Multiple People Grams

Jul 21, 2002, 3:17am
I think it's just a question of another privacy option,
same as telegrams sent by bots. If the telegrams had a
header information that marks them as mass telegrams
or bot telegrams, it would be easy to add a citizen
option to allow either or none of them.

If the universe server would already check the option
and filter out unwanted telegrams, it would not produce
more traffic.

So if someone really implemented it but would also
implement the options to block the telegrams, you could
use your spoon to stab some people from microsoft.

I guess, not more than 10% of all citizens would allow
receiving mass- or bot-telegrams - so it's still the
question wether it makes sense or not.

Exploration Mode

Jul 22, 2002, 3:00pm
The model format and the rendering speed are absolutely
independant in this case. RWX is a format that contains
only quite basic features that you will find in nearly
all other format too, it's a subset of most other formats,
except for few very old ones like nff or raw triangle.

The only thing that is affected by the file format is the
time a model needs to be added to a scenery, but as AW
caches the models already tokenized and/or interpreted,
so this plays only a minor role, except for models that
are newly added to the cache (and scene).

RWX is fast. As I don't know any real competitor of
AW yet, with all features that AW allows me to use,
I cannot say if AW is slow or fast, I just have
nothing to compare it to.

The problem isn't the language, as long it isn't the new
microsoft C#rap.

The problem is, that the class libraries that are used in
GUI applications are usually not available on and not
easily portable to other systems.

C++ is not much more than C with a smarter preprocessor,
so if only the language is used the application is as
portable as C is. The first C++ compilers actually have
been preprocessors for C - I think Glockenspiel was one
of those.
