Newbie Bot Programming - can't "see" bot; get 439

Mar 29, 2004, 5:24am
I'm not a programmer so I can't help you with your question, but I just
wanted to say welcome to AW (you said you were a new citizen) and that
if you need another place to test your bot in, telegram me and I'll let
you use my world if you'd like.

SDK in PDF Format?

Apr 10, 2004, 9:06pm
I was just wondering if the AW SDK documentation is available for
download in Adobe PDF format. If not, would anyone be interested in
converting it to PDF? You wouldn't need to go to the AW SDK site every
time you wanted to look something up, as PDF files are searchable.

Formatting would be different, however. Everything would need to go on
one page (instead of branched off onto different pages), but using a
feature of the PDF format there is a way to make navigation almost
identical.

I DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!

Apr 18, 2001, 10:54pm
The reason at Home sent J B E L L a warning e-mail is because hosting ANY
type of server is against at Home's Terms of Service agreement. J B E L L
doesn't want to have his entire cable modem access revoked, so he is
complying with at Home and shutting down his servers. at Home probably wants
their users to sign up for their at Work service (in which you CAN host
servers), designed for businesses. The at Work service is more expensive
per month, so in turn, at Home (the company) makes more money. This isn't
entirely how it works, but it a simplified explanation.

[View Quote] Then why did you ask "Why are they doing that?????????" if you can come
up with the answer yourself?

> but still even if they are using more bandwith why should they be doing that, its the same
> if someone has cabel and leaves napster on 24/7 its basicaly the same thing.

You are probably correct. I don't use at Home so I wouldn't know if
Napster or other similar peer-to-peer software would be considered a
"server."

> Bet they dont get napster users about that >:-) You people act like I dont know anything.

What people? Who said/acted like you don't know anything? You just asked
a question and I tried to answer it.

> WHATS WRONG WITH YOU especaly the people
> from StuffX and there stuff you guys have problems, one question How many of "your" bots do you sell
> Or how about how many worlds do you host? Do you even sell anything?

"The people" from Stuff-X are just myself and two bot developers. What
problems DO we have? Care to elaborate? Whatever other employees of
Stuff-X say or do are their own actions, not an official response from
Stuff-X itself. It is perfectly fine if you do or do not like me as a
person, yet bashing the entire Stuff-X name is unnecessary. Stuff-X
sells both bot and world hosting and plans to sell bots using Active
Worlds technology in a few months. How many bots do we host? Well, look
at the "Our Customers" section of our website, located at
http://www.stuffx.com/aw/#Customers. We currently host four bots and six
worlds.

> Who would bother? Cuz I know me and J B E L L would never use your stuff
> cuz it sucks.

Who would bother? Well, again, look at our current customers. If what
you say is true (your blunt comment about both you and J B E L L saying
Stuff-X's service "sucks"), could you please give one or more reasons as
to WHY it sucks? Just saying something sucks without giving a reason
does not help any. Do you experience lag in worlds we host? Do you think
our website should be changed somehow? If you or J B E L L would
expand/elaborate on this and give valid reasons as to why our service
may be lacking, we will look at those reasons try to improve our service
based upon your response.

Wouldn't it be cool if...

Apr 21, 2001, 12:05am
I think some of you are being too harsh to M a r c u s. Although I agree
he should have posted this in the wishlist group, in my opinion, he does
have a good idea. The way I interpret his idea is that the user would be
able to change a world's backdrop (in either public OR private worlds).
If the owner of a world doesn't want people changing the backdrop, then
they would check a checkbox under the world options, such as "Disallow
custom user backdrops." It would work similar to the new light command
in 3.1. There could be a "backdrop radius" like the "light radius." It
would only change the world's backdrop at a CERTAIN area and only change
it for a CERTAIN distance.

For example, if I teleported to 8832n 4094e in AlphaWorld and someone
was using a new backdrop command to specify a backdrop, the custom
backdrop would only be displayed five coordinates from the edge of the
citizen's property, NOT change the entire world's backdrop for ALL users
in ALL directions/coordinates. What could you use the backdrop feature
for? Say you are making an observatory and wanted a night sky backdrop
with stars. It would add mood and atmosphere to your building if you
used a custom backdrop.

Sure, there are problems that could crop up (like people using obscene
pictures as backdrops) and such, but I don't think we should dismiss M a
r c u s' idea. I think it is a good idea, yet I also think it would be
hard to implement and control. Roland, Hamfon, et al have enough things
on their to do list as it is. Maybe if Activeworlds.com, Inc. had more
programmers this idea might be implemented. But for now, I don't see how
or when it ever would be.

Apr 21, 2001, 2:28pm
Please see my comments below:

[View Quote] So you are saying that ANY citizen that brings a custom made bot into
Active Worlds can change AlphaWorld's default backdrop at a certain
location, inside a certain range that other citizens can download and
see? Sure you can make your own bot or use already existing bots to
change a backdrop if you own your own world. What I believe M a r c u s
is saying is that he would like a trigger added to the "activate"
command that can change the backdrop so other citizens can see it in ANY
world when you click on something (such as a sign or button). This is
currently not a feature of the Active Worlds Browser.

> The SDK was designed so that if you wanted to do this kind of thng, you
> could - and this wouldnt be hard to do with the SDK at all - so program it
> up and let me know how it goes, I'll come have a look at it when you are

I think you are misinterpreting what M a r c u s is saying. Maybe you
should re-read some of his posts.

Visual Basic Bot Programming

Apr 30, 2001, 8:28pm
What exactly does UFP stand for? United Federation of Planets? What
Active Worlds really needs to fix instead of the periods in user names
is the uppercase I and the lowercase l problem. Someone with an i or an
l in their name is very easy to impersonate. In the chat window, you can
not tell "Builderz" from "BuiIderz" due to the font Active Worlds uses.

I've been impersonated by a few people in the past and now by some
thirteen year-old punk just last week. I am forced to use the name
"BuiIderz" (with an uppercase i instead of an l) on one of my free
citizenships I received when buying my world so people cannot
impersonate my normal account. Yes, you can also impersonate the name
"Makaveli" as well if you are so inclined (although, I wouldn't
recommend it). I believe both Ima Genius and even Roland have been
impersonated in the past as well.

Lastly, if you want to have M a k a v e l i's citizenship revoked, see
if he breaks anything found at http://www.activeworlds.com/terms.html
first.

Nederlands (vertaald door XelaG en BCat) - Nederlands01.txt"

Each citizen account, by default, can run up to three bots
simultaneously. So, if you own a world and three citizen accounts, you
can run up to nine bots simultaneously (three on each account). You can
increase how many bots you can run simultaneously as well. For example,
you can increase your bot limit by one if you win a certain game playing
AW Bingo.

TrekkerX, I regret that you feel Stuff-X is "evil" and that you get the
impression that we seem to think we are better than others. Let me just
say I have never once said "Stuff-X is better than AWC, ImaTowns,
Synergy Corp., and [insert another popular AW hosting provider here] put
together" or tried to personally slander another hosting company. How
exactly is Stuff-X "acting better" than "everyone else?" Could you
please give me specific reasons or actions to back up your opinion? I
don't wish to start a flame war with you, I would just like an honest
answer to my question.

I believe that you may be confusing Lanezeri's attitude with the
attitude of Stuff-X. I admit Lanezeri is a very outspoken person, but I
have no control over what he chooses to post in these newgroups nor what
the content of those postings are. The sole reason I hired him was to
create bots for Stuff-X and he currently has the title of "Lead Bot
Programmer." I look over each and every line of the coding of the bots
that he creates and make any modifications to it that I see fit (that is
why no bots are publicly available yet). I didn't hire him to get into
fights in the newsgroups and I am not responsible for his words or
actions.

Unfortunately, if Lanezeri posted a rude or offensive comment in these
newsgroups and he has "Stuff-X" somewhere in his signature, some may
think that it gives a negative tone or feel towards the Stuff-X company
as a whole. Let me just mention that *I* am listed as the "Public
Relations" person on the Stuff-X staff page (located at
http://www.stuffx.com/aw/staff.html) and Lanezeri is *not* (nor any
other Stuff-X staff member). What he or any other staff members of
Stuff-X may say in a posting, in Active Worlds, in e-mail, etc. may not
reflect the opinions of Stuff-X as a company and Stuff-X may not agree
with those comments. For an official Stuff-X response or stance on an
issue, you should ask/contact *me* and *me* only.

Lane, when I said the sole reason I hired you was to create bots for
Stuff-X, I meant that in a professional sense. That is what you do (or
did, if you wish to resign) at Stuff-X. I did not mean that to come out
as an insult towards you, Lane. I know that you have helped create Web
pages and have done other things in the past for Stuff-X, and I very
much appreciate that, but I have never asked you to do those things (I
interpreted you as doing those things voluntarily). I consider you to be
the best staff member Stuff-X has/had. I just do not agree with
everything you say here in the newsgroups. Personally, I consider you to
be a good friend of mine. We have known each other for a very long time
and have been through a lot together.

I only purchased two bots of yours, Lane. The Bank Bot and the Tag Bot.
The other bots you have made I have not yet purchased, but was planning
to purchase from you in the future. I own a copy of the source code to
the bots, Lane, but you still own the original copyright to that source
code. I was planning on looking at the source code of the bots and
making tiny modifications (change a line of text here, an option here,
etc). That is what I meant by editing the bots. Your username and/or
real name would appear in the About section of all bots and you would be
listed on the Stuff-X staff page (as you are now). I also told you that
I was considering to pay you a certain percentage of commission on the
bots that I wished to sell commercially on the Stuff-X Web site. I did
not say when this would happen, since I myself don't know when I will
get a chance to look at the source code.

You say: "Well since I was only hired to make bots.. I don't want to
work for Stuff-X." Well then, why did you take up the job in the first
place? If you would like to resign from Stuff-X, so be it. However, in
future communication, I politely request that you speak to me in private
regarding this matter, and not post here in the newsgroups just yet.
