Limiting the bandwidth for the admin tool would make sense, but I don't
think AWI ever implemented it. I remember when I used to host A!!CT for a very short while that whenever one of their CTs would try and do a backup using the remote admin tool, it would use my full upstream speed. As a result, the CT said that the world was very slow when doing backups, most of the bots disconnected and people couldn't enter. I used a third party program to limit the admin tool to a set amount of bandwidth and it fixed the problem. Builderz [View Quote] World Server: Able to load objects fasterOct 2, 2004, 2:19pm
This is correct. If you are using an MTU size of 1500 (the default for
Fast EtherNet), you should be able to fit around 1300 bytes of data in one packet (I forget the exact amount). This goes for anything. For example, if you have a GIF on your Web site and it is 750 bytes, it should fit nicely into one packet of data. If the graphic is 40 KB, it would take multiple packets before you completely download it. However, if you use a different MTU, then it may not fit in one packet and two may be needed. Each OS and most routers let you change your MTU. Andras is also correct when he writes "the slower the CPU the more time it will spend to insert the new object into the database." I had a virtual private server for use with testing the world server and I was only able to use a maximum of 256 MHz of CPU power. As a result, I did notice that objects loaded more slowly than a server I had access to that didn't limit the CPU power. Good post, Andras. :) Builderz [View Quote] *snip* > Doing several different tests I assume that approximately 3-4 > objects of the prop file will go to the server in one packet but I can > be wrong on that one. Html support in Tag 200?Feb 15, 2005, 3:20pm
If HTML is allowed on objects and AW uses IE as the default browser,
people would try to put code on a site that would attempt to download a Trojan horse or some other exploit. The HTML security settings would have to be very strict or there would have to be a way to exclude certain file types (such as .vbs, .exe, .com, etc.) from being read. For now, just take a screen shot of the site using a program such as SnagIt and upload it to a server. -Builderz [View Quote] Delete Cache Within BrowserMar 21, 2005, 4:52am

Did you by any chance write down or catch what that error message was?
It won't do any help if you don't report the exact error. What were you doing at the time of the crash? I have had many problems running AW 3.1 under Windows 2000 SP2 using an AMD processor. It would constantly just lockup or reboot itself while using AW (without an error message). I know AMD released a registry file that was supposed to fix something in the AGP bus and Windows 2K, but that didn't seem to help. Make sure you are using the most current and CERTIFIED video drivers for Windows 2K. Although it still doesn't work for me, getting the latest drivers may help you. If it STILL keeps crashing, try running it in software mode or wait until AW 3.2 is released (it has software, Direct3D, and OpenGL support). Well, if someone wanted to launch a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)
attack against your server and you told them you were running Windows NT and had a 1.2 mbps upstream connection to the Internet, they could then estimate how many other computers they would need to compromise to flood your connection with useless data and knock you off-line. I don't know if you've ever heard of buffer overrun (also known as buffer overflow) errors, Agent, but those types of attacks exploit a flaw in unchecked buffers in either the OS itself or a running process/program and try to either crash the system or execute code. If a hoster listed the amount of RAM in their server(s), it would give a better general idea of how long it would take to accomplish this or even if it would be possible or not. Intelligence gathering is key if you are a hacker. Generally, the more you know about something, the easier it is to hack into. I believe that most "true" malicious hackers have a goal or motivation to break into your system, instead of script kiddies doing port scans on the same IP address range your server is located on. It also depends on how much (or how little) information you reveal. Just saying that you use Windows verses a flavor of Unix could make a difference. However, you are generally correct in saying that giving out your system specs shouldn't make you more vulnerable, Agent. Any system with any specs running any OS connected to the Internet has a chance of it being compromised. While I'm at it, let me bring up a good point, Agent. You said: "If you keep your OS and software updated you usually won't have a problem." Most people I know usually say that. However, have you seen how many servers have been infected with the Code Red worm (and its variants)? All of it could be prevented by a simple patch that was released almost a MONTH before the outbreak. One of the main problems is getting IT people to actually regularly patch and audit their systems the right way. Well, that's your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I don't
own many Sony products nor a Sony laptop, but let me just mention that my Sony DCR-PC100 still photo/DV camcorder has never failed me for two years and that I believe it is a quality built product. However, if you need replacement parts for it such as a new lens cap, Sony isn't very good in that regard. Most of the items in Sony's on-line store for the camera were in "backorder hell" the last time I checked. I will admit that Sony is cheap when it comes to packaging and shipping. When I was doing some research for a new monitor, I heard countless stories of this particular Sony monitor (I forget the exact model) that was shipped with only a tiny bit of foam packaging to protect it. Many customers had received their monitors in a damaged state. There will always be customers who have an issue(s) with a product from a company and there will also be customers who have no issue(s) at all. It ultimately comes down to each individual's experience with the company. Security expert Steve Gibson released two programs this weekend to the
public. SocketToMe checks whether or not you have Raw Socket Support in your Windows operating system, and if so, to what degree. SocketLock can be installed onto Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP beta to remove Raw Socket Support for ALL USERS while letting background/system processes still be able to use Raw Socket functionality. In my opinion, all world hosters should download and use SocketLock if hosting on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP beta system without the need for Raw Socket support. More information about the programs and the issue of Full Raw Socket support can be found at http://grc.com/dos/SocketToMe.htm. Mask, Windows 2000 may be a little more picky when it comes down to
hardware support, DirectX gaming, and getting legacy apps to work correctly, but overall it seems to be a better OS than Windows9x/ME (*if* configured correctly ;). If you have Win 2K Service Pack 2 installed, you can run a program in "compatibility mode" and emulate Win 95, 98, or NT 4. It doesn't work on *every* program or old game, but it has worked on some I've tried. The NT kernel is *much* more stable than the Win 9x/ME one, and Win 2K has better memory management. I care about being serious. =) I also agree with what KAH said. Once
something is in a "tangible form," it is automatically copyrighted under US copyright law. However, if you are going to take the time to add a copyright notice to your work, why not at least take the time to make sure it is in the proper format and have it spelled correctly? It is "copyright" and not "copywrite." Copywriter is a word, but copywrite is not. If Brandon doesn't want a judge to take him seriously if someone infringes upon his copyright and he decides to take the matter to court, that is his decision. If he doesn't want to take it to court, that is also his decision. Just because you put a simple © symbol or Copyright John Smith 2001 doesn't guarantee that people will not steal your work. And FYI, "(C)" is not a valid symbol for a copyright notice. Heck, look at Napster, Gnutella, Morpheus, and the other peer-to-peer file sharing programs. How many of you out there actually look at the copyright notice on CD's (actually, I think they are P's with a circle around them because they have to do with audio)? ;) Now can we please just move on and quit quarreling over this? The trial version of BeOS I downloaded a few years ago ran inside of
Windows, but I think you had to reboot to get back into Windows. It was so long ago I forget. I also know there are some flavors of Linux that can run in DOS and in Windows. I agree with you, Agent. I was just stating a fact that other users on
the GRC newsgroups thought that it was unethical to run because they believe that no one else should modify another person's computer system without their knowledge, whether the action has a positive or negative effect. In another forum (I think it was somewhere on DSLreports.com), some were even questioning if the program was legal. I'm just passing along what I've read. Yes. Go to http://www.dynwebdev.com/codered/#discussions and read what
others think about the program. All I was saying is that *some* people did not want to run the program because it modifies certain things on the infected computer's system when trying to alert the admin of the worm. They did not want to run the program because of this fact. Others were debating whether or not it was even legal for an average user to download the program and run it. Another group of people installed it on as many computers as they could. The point I was trying to convey is that it is up to the indivual user to decide if they want to run it, and it has been called an "iffy" program by some. I was just trying to give a little "heads up." Some users won't touch it, some think it is illegal, while others support it very much. Just trying to give the different point of views.
