If you have join and/or file transfer disabled in your settings, and someone
tries to join and/or send you a file, a message similar to this will appear: "Immigration Officer: Sorry, your request to join xxxx was refused." Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say something like: "Immigration Officer: Sorry, xxxx disabled the join feature in their browser." -Builderz skin for browserJan 30, 2001, 10:11am
Skins usually make programs less stable and more prone to crashes. There
was recently a security vulnerability in the skin feature of Windows Media Player 7. I doubt skins are high on "The List" of things Roland wishes to fix/add to Active Worlds. -Builderz [View Quote] Re: Infinite Cell Limit?Jan 30, 2001, 10:09am

Since AW 3.1 has been released, it contains revamped sound code and
offers MP3 (MPEG-1 Layer 3) support. Here are two of my wishes for future versions of AW: 1. Streaming MP3 support. Need I say more? You wouldn't have to download the entire MP3 before hearing it play. On the flip side, the quality would be much lower if you encoded the MP3 to a streaming format for standard modem users. Another downside is that the stream may skip if the user is downloading files from a world's object path while the stream is playing (if the user is on a standard modem connection). This would be great for broadband connections, however. 2. Ogg Vorbis support. Ogg Vorbis is a high quality, patent and royalty free, open source, compressed audio format which also supports streaming. That means: NO LICENSING FEES. The main reason that the Active Worlds Browser doesn't support .gif files is because of royalties/licensing fees. More information about Ogg Vorbis can be found at http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html. -Builderz Two Wishes: Streaming MP3s & Ogg Vorbis SupportFeb 16, 2001, 12:13am
Versions below 3.1 do NOT support MP3 files, but 3.1 supports both .WAV
files with an MP3 header (an "MP3 encoded wave") and standard MP3 files. It doesn't support streaming MP3 files, however (which was my first wish in my previous post). Have a look at http://www.activeworlds.com/help/aw31/mp3.html. -Builderz [View Quote] Streaming voiceFeb 17, 2001, 1:28am

According the magazine Maximum PC, Linux was first made by a college
student named Linus Torvalds in 1991 and released to the mainstream public in 1994. Last I've heard, it is estimated that 90% of the worlds' computers are running either Microsoft Windows and/or a product by Microsoft. I don't have much experience with Linux, but from what I gather, it is aimed more at the hacking crowd than is Windows. Most applications for Linux are free, which I'm sure most script kiddies and true hackers alike enjoy. Let's just say that it has good port scanning ability. ;o) One thing's for sure...its that Linux is geared mainly for the power user crowd. New Red Hat distros have aided users in setting it up and installing it, but not every average Windows user will be comfortable using it. I have an idea for a feature that should be added to the world server
administration tool that would make the life of a multiple world hoster/world hosting provider easier. Whenever I need to manually take the worlds I host off-line for a few moments (whether its to apply a security patch, reboot the system, or what-have-you), there is usually at least one person in at least one of the worlds. I have to start either the Active Worlds Browser or a bot, teleport to the world, and inform the user(s) that the world(s) will be off-line for a bit. It would be a great benefit to world hosters if a "world shutdown notification" message could be defined in the world server admin tool. How would this work? Well, first of all, there could be a checkbox to allow the world hoster to enable or disable the message. Second, there should be a textbox so the hoster can enter their own, predefined message. Third, a command button would be needed so the hoster could send the message. Once clicked, the world server software would send the predefined message that the hoster typed into the messagebox to all of the worlds. What would the user see? Whatever the world hoster typed into the textbox. For example, the user might see the following message: "Immigration Officer: This world will be closing soon due to maintenance. It will be back up shortly." This wouldn't be too hard to add into the next version of the world server software, and, in my opinion, I wonder why it hasn't been added already. Comments, anyone? I have to agree with Wing on this one. I do wonder if you can sign up
for a trial world using a citizenship you have gotten when buying a full world, however. Probably not because the address and other similar information would be the same (unless you entered in different information). If you want another world to just experiment in, try winning one in AWBingo, AWBingo2, etc. Builderz Stuff-X - Bot & World Hosting Services http://www.stuffx.com/aw/ [View Quote] I DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP!Apr 18, 2001, 10:54pm
The reason at Home sent J B E L L a warning e-mail is because hosting ANY
type of server is against at Home's Terms of Service agreement. J B E L L doesn't want to have his entire cable modem access revoked, so he is complying with at Home and shutting down his servers. at Home probably wants their users to sign up for their at Work service (in which you CAN host servers), designed for businesses. The at Work service is more expensive per month, so in turn, at Home (the company) makes more money. This isn't entirely how it works, but it a simplified explanation. You are probably correct. I don't use at Home so I wouldn't know if Napster or other similar peer-to-peer software would be considered a "server." > Bet they dont get napster users about that >:-) You people act like I dont know anything. What people? Who said/acted like you don't know anything? You just asked a question and I tried to answer it. > WHATS WRONG WITH YOU especaly the people > from StuffX and there stuff you guys have problems, one question How many of "your" bots do you sell > Or how about how many worlds do you host? Do you even sell anything? "The people" from Stuff-X are just myself and two bot developers. What problems DO we have? Care to elaborate? Whatever other employees of Stuff-X say or do are their own actions, not an official response from Stuff-X itself. It is perfectly fine if you do or do not like me as a person, yet bashing the entire Stuff-X name is unnecessary. Stuff-X sells both bot and world hosting and plans to sell bots using Active Worlds technology in a few months. How many bots do we host? Well, look at the "Our Customers" section of our website, located at http://www.stuffx.com/aw/#Customers. We currently host four bots and six worlds. > Who would bother? Cuz I know me and J B E L L would never use your stuff > cuz it sucks. Who would bother? Well, again, look at our current customers. If what you say is true (your blunt comment about both you and J B E L L saying Stuff-X's service "sucks"), could you please give one or more reasons as to WHY it sucks? Just saying something sucks without giving a reason does not help any. Do you experience lag in worlds we host? Do you think our website should be changed somehow? If you or J B E L L would expand/elaborate on this and give valid reasons as to why our service may be lacking, we will look at those reasons try to improve our service based upon your response. So, if you get no response from AWCI regarding your wishes here in the wishlist newsgroup (which is probably the case), you can suggest them using the Suggestion Box. Unfortunately, on the flip side, a lot of already existing buildings or
things could be "broken" if there was a massive overhaul of the cell database. There is always a risk whenever changing something as large as how cells operate. I remember back a few years ago when COF changed the object sizes of some of the AW objects (like the desk, computer, etc). Many, many builds were "broken" due to that simple change. Now, don't get me wrong, I would like to have round worlds just as much as the next person, but it has to be done without hurting citizens' current property. It was made over eight months ago, and there is still no Ogg Vorbis support in AW yet. The feature set for AW 3.3 is full as of now, so the earliest Ogg Vorbis support would be added would be AW 3.4.
