Do not browse to your store folder to import, obviously the dbx there is in use by the current OE instance. Copy the file you want to import elsewhere and browse to it using the import dialog.

WinXP Professional Recycle Bin Question

Sep 25, 2002, 4:05pm
No MS operating system allows you to delete or even move to recycle bin files in use like system files in the Windows folder. Especialy Win2K/XP feature Windows File Protection which protects the files listed in %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache folder from deletion; you can try it yourself by deleting for example %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\winmine.exe (game Minesweeper), a couple seconds after you delete it it reappears in the system32 folder.

Anyway "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?" doesn't mean it is attempting to delete the OS heart folder, it could be a file with no extension named windows or a subfolder. If there is no such file/folder a Start->Run->chkdsk /f might help. You can also check/restore the original versions of system files through Start->Run->sfc /SCANNOW, keep the WinXP CD in the drive if you run SFC. I assume you have already run a full AV scan with the latest virus definitions.

Windows Update

I have seen similar behavior caused by script blocking programs like NIS, STOPzilla or Popup Stopper; if you run anything of the kind, temporarily disable it and try again. Also WU requires cookies so check if a program or the web browser itself blocks them.

Some more ideas that you can try:
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files right click Update Class, remove. This will force the WU AX to redownload
Delete C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate
Tools/Internet Options/Delete Files check delete all offline content.

Btw it's obvious you are upset, your screenshots have an extra p :)

In spam related NG (NANAE for example) the all uppercase spelling is avoided by the regulars and new posters are advised to use the lowercase spelling; I doubt Hormel would bother but it still is a registered trademark. Absolutely no. One admin is more than enough, I meant you should be logged in as a simple user,
power user at most and never use the admin account except for administrative tasks;
even for these, Runas is sufficient in most cases, you don't even have to log off.

If you are concerned about forgotten passwords:

- Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and then click Change Password.
- In User name, type the user name of the account that you want to create a password
reset disk for.
- In Log on to, click your LocalComputerName.
- Click Backup.
- Follow the steps in the Forgotten Password Wizard until the procedure is complete.
Store the password reset disk in a safe and secure place.

There is a simple fact that everyone working with computers should understand;
If you run someone's code, the programer owns your machine...simple as that.
The only way around this is trusting the source (or writing your own software),
no one can do anything for you if you run malicious code.

In my previous post I quoted the exact statement that I was referring to, the
one about AWI needing to do something about malicious bots. It's the user's
responsibility and not an AW security hole, period. I didn't really understand
what the OS has got to do with anything, a SunOS box can easily be owned with a
malicious binary if the user is ignorant enough to work as root or another
privileged user (like the vast majority of windows users work as
administrators, Microsoft can't do much about this).

You don't need to be scared, you need to be cautious. If you use common sense
and run only trusted programs you should be fine. I disagree that if you have
technical knowledge you can handle unknown programs; maybe you can, maybe you
can't...depends on the programmer's skills to hide malicious content. Even an
advanced user can overlook malicious behavior because it's a simple fact, code
can do *anything* on computers.

Trust is an issue too, who can you trust? Let's not forget a couple years back
when someone earned the community's trust with a text to speech program only to
release a password stealing bot a couple weeks later.

Your problem sounds more like a routing or firewall problem than services, try
disabling personal firewalls running on the machine included the XP built-in
Internet Connection Firewall (which actualy is a packet filter). In any case it
doesn't hurt to know more about services :)

Strange, weird extra .dll?

Mar 27, 2000, 11:18pm
Hi Klassi,

This seems to be a joke by a world owner. I presume you are talking about the world England. The java messages that appear in the
world's homepage on the internet browser's status bar appear on the AW browser's status bar too, (eg Warning hacking in progress,
to autoblock incoming signals type Blocker now), when you have selected "show web". So ppl think it is something coming from the
AW browser itself. Hope this explains it.

There is a related post by Technozeus at the Beta NG [April 13 2000, Subject: Re: quoted text (was Re: What is ras?)]. The only way to increase line length beyond 132 chars in OE or Outlook is to go through registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{A12A0416-9869-43FB-9384-9038B2DF16B7}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\News\Message Plain Character Line Wrap

Right click/Modify. Value 7fff (32767 chars) seems to work best. You can do the same for email if you want in the \mail key.

Please, send this information to every person in your address book.

If you receive and e-mail that reads
"UPGRADE INTERNET2", do not open it as it contains an executable named "PERRIN.EXE". It will erase all the data in your hard drive and it will stay in memory. Every time you upload any data, it will be automatically erased and you will not be able to use your computer again.

This information was published in the CNN web site.

This is a very dangerous virus. To this date, there is no known antivirus program for this particular virus.

Please, forward this information to your friends (and enemies, as well), so that they will be on the alert.

Also check the list below, sent by IBM, with the names of some e-mails that, if received, should not be opened and must be deleted immediately, because they contain attached viruses. This way, your computer will be safe. The titles are:
1) buddylst.exe

Zone Alarm

Feb 8, 2001, 7:29pm
The only problems I've seen with ZA is when it's installed on localized versions of WinMe especially when installing an older d/l of the program. Tends to block most connections, not just AW, plus it causes available system resources to drop a lot (memory leak?). A brief statement in their support site leads me to believe they are aware and working on the problem. In any other windows version (95, 98, 98SE, Win2K) ZA works without a prob with AW, of course file transfer requires "Allow Server". About the "weird reason" while uninstalling check out http://www.zonelabs.com/services/support_common.htm#25

Baron

[View Quote] What I want to know is, have any of you used Zone alarm and got AW working with it - the worst things about zonealarm, is that even uninstalling it, does not always unblock the ports - for some wierd reason.

Just after anyones experiences with the program =)
