BLOODY 3.2!

Oct 1, 2001, 10:33pm
Actually, I have been having lock-up problems quite frequently since before
the 3.2 upgrade... they aren't happening as often in 3.2, but they still do
occur.

Doesn't seem to be any one thing that is setting it off either. ):

I have a Celeron 333 with 192mb RAM, 16mb VooDoo3 3000 PCI, MSN Dial-Up 56k,
and plenty of hard drive space where AW is stored.

I have gotten the latest drivers for my VooDoo3.. considering that they
aren't supporting the card anymore...

I often wonder if it could be a problem with DirectX 8.0a... since 3.1 WAS
working pretty decently until I installed that to get a Ultima Ascention
demo to work...

Re: Random crashing

Nov 5, 2001, 7:43pm
*FIRST* Sorry to cross-post this, but I am unable to post into the Beta
Newsgroup where I found it.

I have been having this same problem for quite some time.

It used to happen almost constantly.. then I reformatted my hard drive,
re-installed Windows 98, installed the lastest (last)
driver set for my video card, and then only upgraded to DirectX 7.0 as I
think that 8.0a did not work with my video card
which is now defunct.

Since doing the above, I now crash only a few times.. and I too can avoid
completely crashing sometimes.. by using Task Manager
and ending aworld.exe... BUT NOT ALWAYS (Most of the time it's a complete
FREEZE)

AW Browser 3.2 Build 397
Gateway Celeron 333
192mb RAM
VooDoo3 3000 PCI (16MB) (Using Last Driver Version Released)
Windows 98 (Not sure if it's 2nd Edition)
3.45gb left on AW's hard drive
DirectX 7.0
MSN 56k Internet Access
*wonder if this might be the problem... as they haven't been really
reliable in other areas*
Ensoniq Built-in Sound Card (SoundBlaster PCI64)
Internet Explorer 5.0 (With updates for it)

were having some of the same symptons.. and they all disappeared with their

Beta 3.4 [479] [BUG] Problem with create picture?

Apr 15, 2003, 11:19am
Hey, it's great that the 3.4 [479] beta has been released to the public.
Have been wanting to see all the new features!

Possible problem though with create picture command now?

I have been using the pictwlkh.rwx with a picture saved on a geocities site,
and it works fine with 3.3

create picture geocities.com/basti_02/bastwalk.jpg

Now, with 3.4.. I don't seem to be loading the picture onto the object.

I am walking around The Bastion (world aw 1206.1N 7750.0W 0.4a 0) and
finding that a LOT of the create picture
commands are not loading with 3.4.

Anyone else having this problem, or know of a fix?

Celeron 333
WinXP Pro
192mb RAM
VooDoo3 3000 PCI (with last driver released)

Thanks,
Bastillion

When oh when is awmapper coming back?

Apr 16, 2003, 10:59pm
If I read the news page correctly...
http://mapper.activeworlds.com/aw/news.html

Apparently, the AW prop dump is too large for them to transport from one
server to another.
I think they said it is something like 1.5gb in size.

The easiest work around would obviously be for someone with a DVD burner to
copy the prop dump to a
DVD disk... course that is probably more $$$ than Activeworlds is willing to
spend in the name of Customer Service
and Satisfaction.

no auto-upgrade?

May 7, 2003, 8:57pm
That might have only occurred because Calpantera enabled it.

I recall that on the day I read that 481 was available, I did not get the
autoupdate until I actually tgrammed Calpantera about it and he said it was
because he hadn't enabled it.

They (the AW development team) probably just decided that only the true Beta
Testers would get the autoupdate, due to the fact that problems might occur
that open beta testers might not know how to deal with or react to. ;^P

Need Some Opinions....

May 8, 2003, 6:06pm
There was, and according to SkyZack (who is also an extremely key PK) still
is a group know as G.E.T. which stands for "Garbage Elimination Team"... and
their primary reason for existance is to aid Citizens with removal of
offensive objects.

I have applied for and received help from them before in removing stray
objects or incomplete builds.

They have a website where you can petition for the removal of said objects,
but I cannot for the life of me recall or find the website again.

Perhaps I found it somewhere off of the peacekeeper.net website?

I'll post if I find it.

May 8, 2003, 7:07pm
Thanks, but the majority of the talent comes from those who have built
there. :)

As it states, The Bastion is a Gallery of Talented Builders. :) Not so
much a town where people will hang out, although they are more than welcome
too... :^)

The Bastion exists to showcase what other builders have created, and is
meant to be a stepping stone to locations chosen by those who build within.
After they complete their build, I make a tport to the location of their
choice. :)

Question: Building Location Search

May 25, 2003, 2:30pm
I do not know the size of the world Mars, but if they allow you to use bots
on Mars, then you could always use any bot that uses surveying techniques.
I believe that I even had a bot at one time that was scripted to do a search
for you.

You could type in the size of the world, and either a CIT#, Description, or
Action, and then the bot would display all the objects that matched your
query.

Hope this helps.

World AW IP Change, and AWMapper down.

May 27, 2003, 11:11pm
(Cross posted to Community and General.Discussion)

Well.. that was an unexpected annoyance...

Apparently, they moved the World AW to a new server sometime today, and the
IP address changed for it.
Why does this concern me?

My firewall software wouldn't let me connect to world AW.. but it did let me
into AWGate.

I had to find the new addy, adjust my firewall.. not really that hard to
do, but would have been nice of AW to let us know that they were doing to do
that! :)

And.. in the process of doing that... apparently they have taken down the
AWmapper..

http://mapper.activeworlds.com only returns DNS errors now. :-P

Nice of them to let us know they would do that too.. and they really need to
change their website now as well.. since they still have it linked there.

Any towns still alive?

The Bastion (aw 1206n 7750w)
www.bastillion.net

I never really considered it a "town", mainly because most people who have
built there have their own large area builds or towns.
I have always called it a "Gallery" of talented builders.

Lately though, since my RL financials have been lacking, I haven't been able
to put as much time into it as I had previously.

I am still looking for good builders to come and take up a plot.. but using
dial up rather stinks.
Best way to reach me would be to e-mail me (webmaster at bastillion.net) and
let me know the coords and a good date/time that we could meet up.

Alphaworld servers lately....

Mar 30, 2005, 2:45am
Hey there,

Since I cannot afford to continue my personal world at this time, I have
been spending more time on AlphaWorld (AW).

I cannot say that I've experienced any problems with connections, downloads,
or even using my Xelabot. I've been doing some drastic
building lately, and I'm using the lowest speed cable modem that my ISP
provides, which is 112 kbps.

I am connecting from Ohio, in the United States, so perhaps being so close
to their servers might have something to do with why I don't
seem to be affected... dunno.

About the only odd thing I have noticed, is that everytime I log in, it
almost seems like my cache is refreshing everything.. I don't always
start out with triangles, but I have been getting them more often than I
remember. Again, that might be that I haven't been using this
slow of a connection with AW in awhile..

Oh, I suppose that I could also report that trying to upgrade using the
auto-upgrade doesn't work for me.. at this speed, it keeps timing
out and dropping my connection. :^p

Image Switcher

Apr 23, 2005, 2:08pm
Richard and all,
This was a "quick and dirty" solution to a question I had asked Selanit
about. It had solved my purpose, but in the process of working with it and
tweaking it, we realized just how unlimited the possibilities would be for
this new application!

That is why we had decided that we would opensource the code, and allow
others to expand on the premise.

I'm sure there would be a way to modify the script to show thumbnails in
your browser of each picture object, and I had even asked Selanit about some
other possible features - like saving an IP address so that only that person
could make changes until they released the control board, or a set amount of
time had elapsed.

Selanit was kind enough to supply me with this script to solve my
original question. He, like all of us, has a lot on our personal plates,
but took time to quickly resolve this issue for me. :)

I hope that many more people might be able to create even more wonderful
uses inside the AW universe for this application.

Apr 26, 2005, 2:46pm
Well, I couldn't figure out how to modify the .php script myself, so
instead..

www.bastillion.net/gallery/imageswitcher.htm

I created a webpage with the images, and when you click on one, it changes
the image in AW.
This webpage is small enough that I recommend opening it in your AW browser,
and using the back arrow after it
tells you that the image is switched. :)

Selanit, do you have any better ways of possibly doing this?

AlphaWorld Enhanced 1.0 released

Jun 6, 2005, 10:57pm
Actually, I thought about starting a forum topic on this, but might as well
work it out here. :)

I >think< that as long as the dimensions of said object were to remain the
same, then you COULD actually modify it and have it display.

So, if you wanted curved roads, (custom curved roads that is) you could take
one of the road models that you don't use, modify it to make it curved or
round (but remain the same size, mind you) and I think it would work.

I was going to play with this idea myself in a bit, once I remember how to
modify models. I was thinking of trying to modify an existing PW(x) and
PD(x) model to see if my theory works.

I'll post my findings here.

AW Mapper - approaching 1 year outdated

Jun 17, 2005, 1:31am
Just to make this thread active again, has anyone noticed that there isn't
one reply from anyone
that is actually involved in this project? I find that a bit disturbing.

If it's a matter of space being the biggest issue, and a way to transport
the propdump, why the
heck don't they (AWI) just plop down the lousy $150 it would cost for an
external X Gigabyte
drive? *sigh*

Just my 2 cents (not paying anything more, since the price for Cits is

AWI Answers

Nov 18, 2005, 2:38pm
Here here... I agree.

I don't understand why AWI would not like to continually update their
mainstay world.
AlphaWorld could indeed be a historical world, as well as a mothership for
their advancements.

They've already created a separate world with a copy of AWGZ on it.. and
there is even PLENTY of open space
on AlphaWorld itself where the current AWGZ could be relocated to, and
simply put up a sign for people to go and
visit the historical creation.

But, all too many times have I sat at AWGZ lately and found tourists coming
in and going "WTF is this?" or,
"I've seen better at >insert competitor here<.", or "Why would I want to pay
to use this browser if it looks like this?"

I then try to entice any of those Doubting Thomases to visit my area, or
better yet, the wonderful work that's been going
on within SW City.. but why should I have to do that in the first place?!

I do it, in hopes that perhaps they will actually stick around, perhaps
actually sign up for a cit, and therefore hopefully help pay
for some better upgrades.

I had just about left recently.. and if I find nothing changes for the
better.. may yet decide to anyway. :(

Really, there has to be a better solution that this very lame and desperate

Perhaps you should raise the funds to open an adequate world, provide
something for someone to experience and allow them
to decide if they'd like to donate and aide in your world, rather than
blindly giving you money for something that may very well
be nothing they are interested in?

You also do not mention anything about this RPG to entice anyone.
What genre will it be?
Any screenshots of the existing world you are currently building in?
Will there be extra fees to play?
How established are you as a programmer for the bots that will be running

What ISP and types of servers will be hosting your world so that those who
