Wishlist FAQ?

Dec 19, 1998, 1:12pm
I'll set up a list. Everyone who has an idea that should be on the list,
submit it to: rolu99 at mediaport.org If you want to vote on an idea, you can
send your vote(s) to this adress, too. The rules:

-Every person may vote on every idea, but only once per idea.
-The ideas on the list with the most votes will be on top of the list, the
ideas with the least votes at the end. So, the most wanted ideas will be on
top. I will list the idea, and the number of people that voted on the idea
since the idea was added to the list.
-The list will be posted to this newsgroup occasionally, and I will put it
on my webpage.
-The list will contain ideas about possible improvements to AW, thus
everything that can be posted to the wishlist ng, but in a sorted way.

So, send in your ideas to: rolu99 at mediaport.org !!! I hope to hear from all
of you soon, and as soon as I have a few wishes, I'll post this list so you
can vote.

It's rather a "frequently wished wishes list" than a faq. It's like:

idea: privacy mode for telegrams
description: blablabla
votes: 18

You see? I'm not *that* stupid :-)

AW Frequently Wished Wishes-list

Here is the first version of the Frequently Wished Wishes List. If you =
have read the Wishlist newsgroup, you might have read about it already. =
It is an attempt to find out which features should be added first to AW. =
So, please read, send in new ideas, and vote on the ideas *you* want to =
see added to AW!!
The Frequently Wished Wishes List
compiled and updated by Rolu
Version 1

1. Goal of the list

The goal of this list is to list all the ideas of the users of Active =
Worlds about possible improvements for this program, and to find out =
which improvements are most wanted.

2. How to add an idea to the list

If you have an idea that you want to see added to the list, E-mail this =
idea to: Rolu99 at Mediaport.org Please mention your AW-nickname in the =
E-mail.

3. How to change an idea on the list

If you have an addition to an idea on the list, for example, if you know =
a possible solution to a problem that will come up when the idea is =
implemented, mail your addition to: Rolu99 at Mediaport.org Please mention =
the version of the list (found directly under the title, to the right of =
the page) and the rank of the idea.

4. Voting

To find out which ideas are most wanted, everyone can vote on the ideas. =
The rules for voting are:

1. Votes should be submitted to: Rolu99 at Mediaport.org=20
2. If you submit your votes, you should mention both the =
version of the list and the ranking of the idea you vote on.=20
3. Everyone can vote as many times as he wants, but only =
once per idea. So, if you want, you can vote on every idea on the list, =
or only a few of them.=20
4. The names of the voters are not listed next to the ideas, =
but I will keep track of who voted on which idea.=20
5. You can always withdraw your vote on one or more ideas, =
assumed you have voted on these ideas.=20
6. If you submit an idea, your submission is not counted as =
a vote, so all ideas start with zero votes. You can, however, vote on =
your own idea(s).=20
=20
The ideas that have received the most votes are on top of the list, and =
are thus the most wanted ones.

5. Miscelanelous

a.. When an idea is added to Active Worlds, I will remove it from =
this list.

b.. The reason you have to mention both the version of the list and =
the ranking of the idea is that the ranking of an idea is a good short =
way to refer to an idea, but that the ranking can change from version to =
version.

c.. Since this is version 1 of the list, no-one has voted yet, so =
the ideas are in random order.

6. List of wishes

I am making such a list, including voting on the ideas to find out which
ones should have priority. If you want to add an idea to the list, or if you
want to vote on ideas, look at the thread "AW Frequently Wished Wishes-list"
in the newsgroups Wishlist, AWCommunity or Worldbuilders.

plus, too. I'd like to know what the "Many other small tweaks and
improvements" as stated on http://activeworlds.com/newsletter/0199/0199.html
are, however.

showing-avatars-through-objects-stuff some months ago. He said that it was
only one single line of coding that made it like that, but if he removed it
AW would be "twice more slower" than it is now! Hope he'd found an way to
remove that line without making AW slower!

I bet that won't be possible... It's just a matter of wheter the avatars can
be rendered apart from the scenery or not. But if you render the avatars
togeather with the scene, you have to render the whole scene again every
time an avatar moves a bit, even if you stay at the same place. If you
render the avatars apart from the scene, you only have to re-render the
avatars when they move, and not the scenery. This saves a lot of time,
however, it has as a drawback that the avatars will always be at top.

duh, we could do without avatar animation, textures, lightning and action
commands, too. However, with all these things it looks a lot nicer. It's a
good thing to give the car a new paintjob/colour. However, then *also* give
it a better motor if it sux. Personally I would like fading avatars.

At StarTrek they made the holodeck display reality because it is easier =
to film reality than to make 3D animations. If they would make every =
holodeck scene in 3D virtual reality - wheter it is good or bad 3D - it =
would take way more time and money.
[View Quote] They probably foresaw that the possibility of traditional 3D =
rendering engines creating such realism would be very unbelievable =
(besides the fact that VR animation was, by that time, hardly original). =
They could have chosen to go the traditional route, but chose something =
that could open more possibilities (if only fictional).=20

In other words, 3D rendering was already a familiar concept so they =
went with something that people were unfamiliar with and could give the =
illusion of being possible someday. With the traditional 3d rendering =
engine concept, if it had been chosen, people would be saying "Yeah, =
right! Give me a break!" But, with the energy/matter manipulation =
concept not many people had the background experience from seeing it in =
the media to have a basis for saying such things.=20

But, I am sure that even if energy/matter manipulation ever comes =
into the realm of reality, there will always be some flaw in the design =
that will prevent the total illusion of reality from being pulled off =
completely. Any creation of man which depends totally upon synthetics =
and human calculation will inevitably fail to be a fool proof illusion =
of reality. No matter how real it may seem, there will always be some =
"crack in the wall" of the illusion that will give it away.=20

[View Quote] Shyea...right. I'll believe it when I experience it. I can tell =
3D so easily. Most 3D modellers/animators mess up on the lighting =
(making the object too shiny/reflective and/or bright/glared). Plus the =
jerkiness/twitchiness of 3D animation is VERY easy to spot, not to =
mention the overall plastic/doll-like look to humans. And when in doubt, =
look for polygon edges. Got a URL for it perhaps? 3D has a LONG way to =
go before it's believably real...to me at least.=20
And "Advanced Rendering Technology" has to be the cheesiest, =
most cliche name something can have. Talk about technobabble...almost as =
bad as "state-of-the-art", "cutting edge technology", and "on the =
leading edge". Feh...there's another lame phrase I can't seem to recall =
at the moment, but it's equally as annoying when used by people who =
don't even know what the hell they're talking about (like =
advertisers/marketers/public relations types/etc).=20

Sure, but then give the car a good paint job, $2000 stereo system, a sunroof
*and* a new engine. It will drive better *and* look better. AW is in urgent
need of some speed and performance increase. However, it also needs its
"look" to attract new visitors and keep old ones. So, I would say, go after
a better (preferably full screen) 3D-engine, but keep an eye on the details.
It is a balance between performance and looks. I consider the performance
the most important thing at the moment.

>AW's been in desperate need of a new 3D engine for years. My point is, the
engine needs work before the sunroof is added. Everything else is fluff. The
engine should be the main priority for Roland.

That's what I said.

>AW's system CPU requirements is a Pentium (no MHz specified). I have a
Pentium-rated 133MHz CPU and AW LAGS like shit on it. The earliest Pentium
speed is, what, 60MHz? Now let's think here...either COF ups their minimum
requirements, or they get a new engine because right now it's shit, dig?
This ain't brain surgery to see why the engine is more important than all
these shit fluff additions...

I've got a P-200 + Hercules Stingray 128/3D, in AWGate I get 4-7fps at 40m,
densely built area's without avatars 18+fps at 40+m, empty area's (all green
open field) 72-80fps at 120m. Especially with a lot of avatars in sight the
(still not very high) performance goes down. I agree that Roland should get
a better 3D engine. Mabye everyone should go search for a better engine and
give what they found to Roland, if he doesn't have time for it.

Exactly. All the time things come up in you. Most of the time they are
wrong. However, you assume that they are right, and then you start to tell
us that you don't agree to something that we actually didn't even say. And
then it takes us days to make you see your error. If you make an assumption,
and then want to tell that you don't agree to it, first ask us if it
actually was what we meant. Most of the times it won't.

Again not right. You said COF gives a way too low minimum requirement, and
that the current engine is shit. You say they have to correct at least one
of these two. Then, I give AW's performance on a reasonable good computer
with 3D acceleration. Then I say that the performance still isn't very high.
I agreed to you on that point, I didn't decline it.

>No, what Roland needs to do is bug the shit out of Criterion to provide
ADEQUATE RenderWare Direct3D drivers. You'd think after COF (although
probably actually Worlds) paid, what, $10K (or a few $K to upgrade from
version 2.0) for RenderWare 2.1 they'd at least want to get their money's
worth. I already tried bugging them but I can only do so much since I don't
actually have a license with them. COF should. I even posted about this on
their listserve but Criterion never responded and some other people who paid
big money for RenderWare were pretty pissed too. For all intensive purposes,
RenderWare is dead.

Mabye Roland should try OpenGL. Nowadays, it's reasonable fast, gives a WAY
better image quality, has full 3dfx support (and other hardware
acceleration, I believe), is system-independent, and well documented. And
best, its totally *free*. No licenses, no $10K. OpenGL lives, more and more
hardware accelerator producers deliver OpenGL drivers with their cards. More
and more games and apps use OpenGL. OpenGL is worked on all the time. In my
opinion, a *far* better choice than sticking to RenderWare.
