SDK for VB4?

Jan 10, 1999, 10:33am
Hi, it's really great that SDK works for VB, but I only got VB4!
I can sure get 5 or 6, but 4 is my level so far.. Please, if anybody
got an SDK bot for VB4, please mail me!

my wish

Yes, but programmers needs to be payed, and COF seems to have too little money
for paying a couple of programmers. )c;

How about getting some volounteers from AW (citizens) who are good programmers
to help Roland and Protagonist a bit? Or is that a bit risky for COF?

One-to-one mic conversation

Dec 27, 1998, 5:09pm
Just an idea a friend told me a few days ago... One-to-one mic
conversation. I guess it would be best to make it so that you right-
click an online friend's avatar or name on the contact list and
select i.e. "1-2-1 conversation".

Then that friend will get a question, just like the join confirmation-
stuff, and if he/she accepts an 1-2-1 conversation, a new tiny
window where mic quality etc. is displayed while they talk. To end
the conversation, one of the users can just press a button in that
window.

Guess it's a bit to hard for Roland to add that function, but it would
be fun if it was implemented into AW. Maybe also with an invisible
option, where the tiny window is hidden. You can stand in GZ and
talk to a friend, in real-time and with real voices.

I like the idea! (c:

One-to-one mic conversation

Dec 28, 1998, 10:34am
Yes... I know there are always some (maybe even alot) who got a slow modem.
Even if many got ISDN, some cable, there are always some with a slow modem.
That's life...! But more and more get faster connection to the net today...
Soon we'll be having video-conversations in AW as well... (c;

Actually a friend of mine, who runs a large company, once talked to ENZO about
video conversation in AW. He needed it to provide meetings with his associates
around the world. At that time, ENZO said it would be easy to implement into
AW! All he needed was some money for doing it!

I think they are capable of lots more than they want us to know... They just
need more money, or may I just say money... (c:

See you all in '99!

Dec 30, 1998, 9:22pm
See you again in 1999, folks!
And may '99 bring more new exciting stuff to the AW-browser!
Hope COF tries to put more money and power behind the building
of the AW universe! *Cheers for a great year in AW, '98. I think 1998
is the year where most stuff has happened to AW*

New years eve-greeting from CyberTwins

I just read the AW Newsletter! The beta is coming in just a few days,
containing i.e. file-transfering and better world-control for
world-owners!

This is getting better (c:

[View Quote] [View Quote] Agree (even if I don't have a 3D card at all), but I'm still happy to see these improvements!

> The option to not show avatars through stuff is cool, and about the only good thing worthy of a new build, in my opinion. Whispering MIGHT be a minor plus, too. I'd like to know what the "Many other small tweaks and improvements" as stated on http://activeworlds.com/newsletter/0199/0199.html are, however.
>

I talked to Protagonist once about that showing-avatars-through-objects-stuff some months ago. He said that it was only one single line of coding that made it like that, but if he removed it AW would be "twice more slower" than it is now! Hope he'd found an way to remove that line without making AW slower!

>
> And whoever created that AW URL directory/file system needs to use more common sense. Considering the "0199.html" file is in the "0199" directory, having the HTML file the same name is unnecessarily redundant. Simply name it "index.htm", "index.html", or "default.htm", or "default.html", and just use http://activeworlds.com/newsletter/0199/ as the link. Isn't efficiency neato? I think so...

> Software 3D rendering is just lame with the amount of 3D cards on the market and their low prices. Even RenderWare's hardware acceleration is pathetic. I get MUCH better frame rates in Tomb Raider than AW...and TR3 has multi-colored, multiple, dynamic lighting, particle effects, fog, smoke, mist, rain, snow--well, just see for youself at http://tnlc.com/eep/tr/compare.html. In essence, even the original TR blows AW away in terms of rendering, and it's over 4 years old! (AW is about the same age yet still uses the same software rendering engine.)

That reminds me about something!
I wathched CNN yesterday evening, norwegean time (yes we do get CNN in norway as well), and they had this program about the electronic future (no, it was not discovery - i'm sure it was CNN). Some of the things they told would come in the future, and wich is being developed at the moment, was 3D wich is so real you don't know if it's made by nature or by computers. It is being developed in a university somewhere in the US (maybe it was england, i don't know).

I saw some examples of the 3D engine, a woman standing holding a glass-bulb looking into a mirror with dust and some fog on the ground. The reflections, the twisting of what's behind the bulb and everything! It seemed totally real!

They called it Advanced Rendering Technology.

Now that's the future of AW! The programmers said they simply looked at the nature and programmed what they sawed into the ARD-engine.

Why not let COF make some more and better 'bells and whistles' and first of all
better GUI (graphical user interface) so they attract users wich "fall in love" with
all the extras, THEN they can concentrate more on the engine as the hardware
developes.. That would at least be better than having a better engine and no one to
ride it, since the program isn't good enough.
And Eep and cubiac.. There's no need to say that I'm not enjoying AW, since I am! I
love AW, but I didn't fell in love with the engine. It did play an important part,
but that wasn't before after a while!

So I'm saying that COF sould make a better sunroof, car stereo and maybe even mobile
phone to attract new users, then they can develope the engine as they get more money
and more users.
When testers from for example magazines open AW and see a over 3 year old layout,
they get a bad impression.. AW's new component (forgot the name) got WAY to many
extras, and they got a very bad engine, so it's important to find a baance but still
don't scare the new users off!

When you come in to a car store, do go right to the Monstertruck or the el-car?

[View Quote] [View Quote] I've actually been in AW for 2 1/2 year now, but never really been so interested in the engine.. For me AW don't jerk, twitch or lag! It's normally on 8-9 kbps and that's enough for me. I don't need anymore to enjoy AW! And I got a 3 yrs old Pentium 133 with resently updated ram (now 32), and it have been a bit slow before, but it works just great now and it has been for a long time..
I hope 1999 will be a year of changes (c:

>
>
> Oh, so you fell in love with how AW jerks, lags, and twitches? You must be a Christian or something (a glutton for punishment). While I don't necessarily NEED a "super-charged" car, I want something that works adequately and is reliable.

Nope, it didn't jerk twitch and lag! I'm not even religious, I want the same as you, but I've already had that for a while. It wasn't always that reliable, but I think it is now.. And it is good enough to enjoy AW and do what you came to do!

>
>
> Think about that. If the engine is laggy, twitchy, and unresponsive, how are all the fluff features in the world going to make up for the basic functionality that AW lacks? It won't. The 3D engine is the most important part of any 3D application. Period.

They may do more work on the engine, I'm not saying that that's out of the question, but at least refresh the look a bit! For instance the gesture buttons.. Those are a bit old... The 3D engine IS a very important part, sure.. What would the application be without it? Just a good looking piece of shit, I know.. But I'd rather enjoy AW with 8-9 kbps and a new look on the program than wait some months till COF has improved the engine, so i must upgrade my computer and still have the old fasion look!

>
>
> Right, and the balance begins with better 3D hardware support. Do you (or have you ever) work(ed) in the computer industry? I doubt it.

Nope, I'm only 14 years old, so that wouldn't be possible.. I've only worked with some programming and webdesign.. Maybe that's why I'm so eager to get a better look?

If COF would make AW's engine so good that it required Voodo, Pentium 200+ and 64 MB RAM , most of the user would still be stucked with the old fasion look and nothing else! My computer is already soing its best, and that's ok for me, since I can't upgrade my computer (costs too much for a 14 yrs old boy)!

I totally agree with you! But i wasn't religious..
And talking bad about others religions can be the worst thing someone can ever

you should think about what you write about others, Eep!

Eep! Do you think you could learn as much Norwegian as I know English when you
were 14 years old??

Just want to say that - I live in Norway, and our neighbour countries are
Sweeden and Denmark. You know what? The three "different" languages of the
three countries isn't almost different at all. A sweedish don't have any
problems talking to a norwegian. (c;

Just my comment... Every single language got another language it's based on.
Except the "base" language. That's it... English is the base language at the
moment. Many norwegean, sweedish and dannish words are very simular to both the
english and the german language. Soon we'll all be speaking Chineese!!

What's the matter with you Eep?
You say we're newbies and idiots! I tell you what.. You are the idiot and newbie in here! Maybe not in the AW engine, but in normal conversation you're a complete fool! I really don't even want to answer you, but you sure need some help!

You can't accept that other got other oppinions than you, and if they do, they're just idiots and newbies? It's YOU that need an upgrade in the engine!

Teleport/url text-2-link transformer

Mar 7, 1999, 7:27pm
Why not simply add a small piece of code (sounds so easy...) wich checks
if you write either a teleport or a url/mail address. Then it prints the
whole sentance you said to the dialog box, but makes the
url/teleport-part into a link. If the user press the link he/she will be
sent to that url/coordinate.

That shouldn't be too hard? I have to admit I got the idea from IRC, but
it is very useful! It will eliminate all those questions from tourists
saying like "what's a telepart?" and "how to i telega.. eh... port??"
