CY Awards Newsletter [IMPORTANT INFORMATION]

Jul 21, 2005, 5:40pm
Okay, everyone, please knock it off. You all guys, not just ORB and Aura
Lily but also everyone included, need to stfu.

I thought the whole dispute was resolved already. Well, it appeared it's
not. Aura Lily just had revived the flames. Shame on you, Aura Lily.

ORB, please, stop capitalizing the entire content of your writing in some of
your posting. It make you look more immature. In fact, you shouldn't CAPS
all of your posting if you truly have a serious problem with Strike Rapier.

Also... Activeworlds Inc. would recommend that you two and everyone else
drop it. If you have a problem, just email abuse at activeworlds.com. I think
that the fact you are putting your complaints in the newsgroup instead of in
email message to Activeworlds Inc. is not wise.

Please, take your personal quibbles out of this damned newsgroup. I
personally am fed up with all of your lame and baseless attempts to turn the
public against a person.

The complaints are private and should not be personally released to the
public.

In very least, I'm prepared to write a letter of complaint to Activeworlds
Inc. in case you all don't drop it. I will hope that Activeworlds Inc. take
care of this garbage crap that fills up the newsgroup. If I were an advisor
to Activeworlds Inc., I'd recommend that they delete all of this garbage
crap and to moderate this newsgroup more tightly.

I may be the person who find flame wars funny but this case is no longer
funny and, actually, I never found it funny from the beginning. The thing is
that it is more of ANNOYING.

Also, the whole flame wars of this is in violation of the Newsgroup Charter
and also violates the Active Worlds Code of Conduct and perhaps also Code of
Content (although I doubt about the last one).

I would personally recommend that Activeworlds Inc. take action and
disciplines the violators in this newsgroup and therefore moderates it more
tightly.

I have noticed that the moderation of this newsgroup is very loose, which is
not satisfying to me. I think personally that Activeworlds Inc. must tighten
its moderation of the newsgroup and to prevent any cases like this.

I suggest that ALL OF YOU quit being a bunches of stupid pricks and DROP IT
NOW.

I don't care if you tell me to filter you out because I think I shouldn't
have to. Filtering you all out is just a waste of time.

Strike Rapier just posted a posting about newsletter and yet you posted
accusation shit? That is not relevant to the thread.

I'm sorry, but you guys disappointed me and the community. THAT IS NOT THE
WAY ACTIVE WORLDS COMMUNITY SHOULD BE.

ENOUGH.

Sincerely,
Legion

Overpriced.. How the heck?

Jul 20, 2005, 6:43pm
Why would a relatively new citizen buy a uniserver? I'd say new citizens
need a lot of time doing research and see how they feel about their
experience in the Active Worlds universe or elsewhere before making a
decision to buy a uniserver. In other word, it's better to take a tour to
see what it is like and etc. :p

Sincerely,

Overpriced.. How the heck?

Jul 21, 2005, 5:47pm
That's interesting idea about non-commercial and commercial license but is
it feasible business-wise? There are many, many non-commercial world and
universe owners besides those commercial ones so if they receives lower
prices and if there is no additional purchases, Activeworlds Inc. will be in
deep shit (translation: red ink) so that is a big issue, unfortunately.

But it is possible that surveys could provide answers from many folks when
asked if they would purchase an universe or world if the idea above is
implemented and the price is lower for those non-commercial users.

But the survey method is also questionable according to some people,
especially in accuracy. But who knows.

AWGays.com

Aug 4, 2005, 1:36am
Congratulations. I'm glad to hear LGBT folks get to have a central community
to represent them for first time since the collapse of Pink Village. It's a
shame that Pink Village has collapsed years ago. It was such a great
community. It was considered to be one of the early successful communities
that deserves the mention in the Active Worlds history. I think Bille and
other folks has done an extraordinary job for Pink Village during its early
years.

Pink Village has certainly played a major role in the Active World community
affairs. I think awgays.com is a good move toward resurrecting gay & lesbian
communities in the Active Worlds. I say that despite my, *ahem*, problem
with homosexuals because I think it's terribly wrong to hate the homosexuals
and to discriminate them. It is just that I am not most comfortable with
homosexuals, considering the fact that I grew up in the community in real
world that is mostly heterosexual (sp? >_<!), which is probably not
surprising since my hometown is generally within the Bible Belt. I don't
think that I have a most extreme form of homophobia. It is more of a limited
degree of homophobia. Very limited, I emphasize. But, in the consideration
of one of my high school friends being a former homosexual, it has given me
a something to soften my anti-homosexual attitude in the high school days (I
graduated last year) but I think it remains difficult for me to at least
completely eliminate my certain discomforts with homosexuals.

But, at least I hope that someday the divide between most conservative (and
currently anti-gay) communities and the gay communities is to be at least
resolved. But that's unlikely. But I don't approve of murders and abuses
against gays and lesbians just simply because of them being largely
un-Christian (not sure if this is also a problem with Islam either O_o). I
don't approve because murders and abuses are not simply sanctioned or even
approved by any Gods, whether it be Lord of Christianity, Yahweh of Judaism,
or Allah of Islam. Even without religion, the common sense will tell you
that nothing good is gained by simply abusing or murdering gays or lesbians
just because they're gays or lesbians. It's even stupid to think that
murders are answers to problems anyway.

With that said, may Gods of all religions blesses you all and good luck with
this whole thing.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Legion

ASL

Feb 18, 2006, 8:24pm
Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!

Sorry for belated reply to this thread (due to the fact that I have to leave
for college before the date this thread was created and I was practically
without freedom of access to internet at this time), but I want to just let
you know that, as a deaf person, I am grateful and pleased for your effort
to make ASL learning possible and accessible for everyone who may be
interested in learning about ASL. I would like to point out, though, that I
don't use ASL entirely.

I use another one called Signing English for most of my life and one of the
major difference between SE and ASL is that SE are closer to English grammar
and language than ASL is. In other words, SE users would signs exactly as a
normal English sentence is ordered or patterned in a way. For instance, it
does use elements such as "is" "are" and etc. ASL is relatively easier to
learn because it doesn't use those elements in order to be more quicker
because signing tends to be more slower than spoken English if it is done
exactly like spoken English in terms of ordering of sentence and etc.

ASL is far, far more common in Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
which is the world's only university fully dedicated to college education
for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. It is also more common in almost all
state's school for the deaf (although I don't have any evidence of it, since
I only have been actually enrolled at Kentucky School for the Deaf for
relatively short period prior to my return to public school during my middle
school years and have not visited any schools for the deaf at all). I was
also quite fluent in spoken English, which is really a extremely rare gift
or talent for any deaf folks to actually attains, although I was practically
unable to understand other people speaking in English during conversation. I
suspect that my growing up have something to do with this particular
difficulty to understand other's spoken English.

At any rate, I am not good at explaining anything so if you want to
understand what I'm trying to explain the major difference between SE and
ASL, you should check out this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signed_English .
I should also note that it is common for me to speak English while signing
at same time. This probably places me closer to either SSS or SE - American
as mentioned in that particular article. Yes, I know, Wikipedia may not be
reputatable encyclopedia but I know how to spot suspicious information that
may not make sense and thus may not be neutral piece of information. You
just have to use common sense to spot it. Of course, I don't recommend using
it as a source for your research projects, not even in schools or college.
;)

Anyway, I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to sweets and other
folks involved in this whole project for their efforts to bring ASL to
Active Worlds community. With that in mind, I think it should be (if not
already) nominated for Cy Awards (or whatever equivalent is to it, since I'm
still getting conflicting information about whether Cy Awards is still alive
or not...). :)

Where'd The Midis Go?

Oct 14, 2005, 8:29pm
At least I'm old-fashioned so I would still favor having Active Worlds
browser continuing MIDI support in addition to WAV and MP3, plus adding few
new audio formats. Actually, considering the media command now supported in
3.6, I'd say we got a whole lot of new media formats that are supported by
Windows Media Players so I don't know all file formats from there and which
one is audio, which one is video, and else... :)

"Sneak peak" at AW 4.1 (different universe)

Jan 12, 2006, 2:00pm
The introduction of the features in version 4.1 of Active Worlds shall make
possible or further the advance of the following creative projects and

innovations:

1.) Shopping (already existed but now further enchanced in the real form
plus in the ficitious form (shopping in Stagecoach Island is a good example
of this

type of shopping)

2.) Gambling (either in real form and/or ficitious form. This idea actually
reminds us of that ol' good Whistling Plains Casino in SW City. However, I
have

doubts about the real form of gambling being permitted since we have not
seen the real form of gambling since last world that offers it disappeared a
few

years ago)

3.) Zones that provides an opportunity for creating different types of
enivornments within same world. It is also possible to create such zones for
Angel

Island featured in the Sonic games.

4.) Particle emitters shall provides opportunities for creating different
types of particle effects such as smokes, different type of gases, possibly
fires

as well, ion or any forms of effect being emitted by engines such as
starships (think of Star Trek), cars, etc. and it also allows us to
generates the

effects of steams far more advanced than the existing steams used in
Alphaworld, and many more possiblities. It allows for creation of different
types of

environments in far, far more realistic form such as dark, seedy urban
environments, industrial complexes, a star system with planets and stars. It
also may

possibly enables us to generates more realistic forms of waters,
particularly in rivers, creeks, oceans, and more.

5.) Customizable avatar may allow us to have a greater numbers of unique
avatars to choose. Essentially, this allows all of us to become ourselves
instead of

looking same just because we were forced to use specific avatar without
ability to customizes them. I could be businessman (think: corporate CEO), a
mafiaso,

or a police officer. You could be a knight with a sort of unique way of
identifying yourself by your own shields, be a modern-day soldier, be a
dolphin, be a

bird of any kinds such as hummingbird or that ordinary birde (obviously).
Many possiblities exists. It also allows you to change clothes for whatever

occasions warrants, such as parties, memorial services (not sure if we did
have that before but I dunno), religious services, etc. This also goes for

weddings, birthday parties, grand opening of certain places, festivals
(especially that SW City's Birthday Bash as well for Active Worlds
Festivals), and as

well that Cy Awards or whatever that replaced it (I say that because I'm
getting too many conflicting reports of whether Cy Awards is still going on
or not)

and more.

6.) Vehicles, a.k.a movers, opens up pretty much lots of opportunities.
First of all, it allows us to use it as a transportation. I am still getting

conflicting reports on whether it will allows for passengers in addition its
driver but I do believe it will be eventually implemented if it hasn't been
done

yet. If that were to be implemented, this will certainly allows Active
Worlds to be ahead of a particular best-selling game called Grand Theft
Auto: San

Andreas since the latter still lacks the ability to allow you to take anyone
as passengers even without gangs joining you, hookers joining you, or anyone

going for your taxis. I'm talking about the NORMAL circumstance that you
take ANYONE, not specific kinds of people. Glitches in that latter game
probably

allows for that but it wasn't originally intended for that. On other hand,
Active Worlds may have an edge over it in that it is not only a sort of
"multi-

user enivronments" with humans instead of AI-controlled folks but also that
you could actually at least talks to your friends while travelling.

This feature and the above description will allow the following:

Field Trips on a bus, coach, or whatever that is...
Limousine in or out of a motorcade ;P You could drive or ride in it with
your own driver. ;P
Parades
Racing Events to be televised on AW-based television networks involving
either cars, motorcycles, airplanes, etc.
Air Shows
Car Show just for people to brags or boasts about their own cars. ;P
Bike Show ;P
Bikers (I hope we don't get another Hell's Angels O_O)
School Bus (O_____O)
Garbage Dump Truck (>_<)
Tow Truck (O_______O) (note that it is not yet possible to tow any cars at
this point and don't even think AWI will allow that either. It will surely
be

abused!)
Police Car, Police Motorcycle, and Police Helicopter
It may be possible to have bots automatically set to fly the planes with
humans in it (if the passenger features are enabled..) on schedules from
airport to

another airport. O_________O
Air battles O____O (I doubt AWI will implement features to allow damage
models or any forms of damages / weapons, considering their staunch
anti-violence

stance)
Tank battles
Further advances in paintball technologies possibly
Naval battles O_____O
Space battles >_<
Starships
Naval vessels
Tanks
Airplanes
Jet or Propeller Fighter
Jet or Propeller Bomber
Bot-controlled public bus system across city
Bot-controlled public rail system across city
Trains
Missiles O___________O
Bombs O_o
Bot-controlled police officers on feet and in cars comes swarming upon you
if you triggered something O____________O
Mining vehicles going into and out of mines...
Ambulances
Fire trucks O_o
Mech troops (boring them...I prefer human troops :p)
Riding a horse or donkey O_o
Bot-controlled animals via vehicles moving around on farms, grasslands, in
the forests, etc. Bears, cows, sheeps, etc. Maybe buffalos, or dinousaurs.
O_O
Automated bot-controlled traffic moving around in the city.
Farm machinary such as tractors, harvesters, etc. I don't want a farm
machinary that can grinds into an avatar into meats like in GTA:SA... too
gross >_<
Helicopters :D
Jetskis of course but it's boring to me :p
Snowboards
Hang Gliders
Skateboards O_o
Scooters >_<
Mopeds >_<
Hovercrafts O_o
Space shuttle :p
Rockets O_O
Boats
Sail boats
Fishing boats
Whaling boats O_o (kind of stupid anyways.. pointless them)
Cruise Ships O_________O
Cargo Ships
Aircraft Carriers O____________O
Oar-sailed vessels from ancient era O_o
Titantic O_o
Apache Helicopters for military O_o
Hearse (what do we need that for? >_<)
Boat racing events O_o
Cargo helicopters
Submarine O____________O
Riverboat O_o
Construction equipments or machinary such as bulldozers (although obviously
it won't bulldozes anything in any public-building worlds. No points
building in

a world if it is gonna be bulldozed. :P)
Subway Trains O___________O
Monorail Trains O___________O
Maglev Trains O__________O
Ice Cream trucks with its music ;P
Private jets O_____O

Oh, by the way, please do not ask for features to allow you to crash into
buildings to take it down. I consider it a disgrace and disrespect for those
who

lost lives in World Trade Center / 9-11 events. Please respect their memory.
This is just simply a warning to those immature teens who will probably ask
for

that. -_-

A bot-controlled public subway, monorail, or maglev system
Esclators?
Elevators? O__________O
Industrial machinary O.o
Sedans
Convertible crusing on road along the beach on sunny day O______O
Pickup Trucks O.o
Shopping Carts? Nah... maybe Golf carts. Wealthy folks at country club ftw.
:p
Stagecoach driven by horses. O_o
Viking longboats (Mithyrl would especially like this one :p)
and many more....

7.) For the first time, everyone can hear any sound effects you activates or
bump-triggered. This allows for the following possiblities...:

Opera event
Rock, Jazz, or any types of music concerts
RPGs that involves teams maybe being enchanced?
Paintball technologies maybe being enchanced???
Judge in the court banging gavels to silence the crowds getting out of hands
in courtroom ;P
Traffic with its sounds... you might as well hear it while driving or riding
on a vehicle moving through the traffic. O_o
Fog horn
Boat horn
Car horns O_O
Any types of battles being played out with its sounds
and more...

Also anything other than sounds being activated can also be seen by everyone
within the ranges. This allows for the above plus:

Doors being opened is also seen by everyone in the ranges

Any kinds of effects such as fires accidentially started (;P) or lights
being switched on or off can be seen by anyone. This will also opens up
another way

to annoys people in the house or any buildings by switching lights on and
off repeatedly or something along that line. ;P

Any machinary being turned on while everyone sees it starting up :p

And more...

There are supposed to be other features but I have yet to see them or to
test them out. I'll add more about those features if I manages to do that.

That's about it.

Thank you.

A WARNING TO ALL...

Jan 12, 2006, 3:02pm
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let's get this straight for once and all...if I find out that one of the
users in Active Worlds falsely accuses me or any citizens in order to get
them or me wrongly permanently banned by AWI, I will have them thrown out of
the universe by contacting AWI about it. This message is prompted by
yesterday's evening conversation with Ferruccio about me getting banned from
Active Worlds, which has gotten me suspicious about whether he will made up
a false accusation or not. I doubt he will take that dangerous risks but
this message is simply a warning that applies to ANYONE that uses Active
Worlds. Don't even think about taking that path or I will do what I have
stated above. This is your warning. I'm warning you all. Don't make me do
this. This is a serious stuff and I'm not even being funny or joking AT ALL.

If you want to make my day, go ahead and see what happens next. Thank you
for your attention. Have a good evening or day, whereever you are.

A WARNING TO ALL...

Jan 13, 2006, 1:44pm
I do not believe I have done anything to warrants my own banning but if you
have any evidences to show me otherwise, I will be willing to terminate
these alleged actions for that I do not wish to be banned from the Active
Worlds universe that is very dear to my heart. The Active Worlds universe
has one thing that I loved greatly and that is being able to build virtually
anything, especially with respect with realism, in their public building
worlds.

If you have any true evidences that may warrant the possible banning of me
from the Active Worlds universe, please do not be afraid to talk to me about
it and I will attempt to resolve them. I am willing to take as far as I can
so that I can continue to enjoy building in the universe.

Thank you.

A WARNING TO ALL...

Jan 13, 2006, 1:55pm
Sweets, not all of what I've done is really intended to be annoyances. There
is difference between what I intended to annoy anyone and what I did not
intend to.

This "hooker" comment was meant to be jokes. Oddly enough, I did this joke
with some girls in RL and they seems to be laughing. I apologize if that
offends you or anyone.

I just like to jokes. Apparently the lines between when I was actually
intended to be annoying and when I am really joking is blurred so much that
it is real difficult to tell the difference.

I always joked with females, unlike that of males. I think. Bah, I don't
remember everything. I seem to always have a selective memory, which is
probably one of symptoms of my bipolar disorder, at least I think I was told
by someone about that. I am trying to confirm whether that is one of
symptoms of bipolar disorder or not but to no avail. I would appreciate if
anyone can answer this one because I really want to know if this is true or
not. These selective memory are really frustrating me. -_-

A WARNING TO ALL...

Jan 15, 2006, 10:22pm
I am withdrawing my warning and would like to respectfully requests that the
entire thread of this be deleted on the behalf of this community. I cites my
own personal tiredness of being on defensive against controversies as a
reason for withdrawal of my own warning and also for planned sharp reduction
of my posting activities in the newsgroup and elsewhere.

I also have established my personal "blacklist" in my contact list in both
Active Worlds and Stagecoach Island universe in which I shall enable all of
the available privacy options via "right-click menu" on those "blacklisted"
citizens which includes, but are not limited to, "mute on sight", "block
telegram", "block join and invite requests", "block file transfer requests",
"hide world I'm in", and finally "hide my online status".

I am planning to downsize my "public life" which has extensively
overexpanded up to this point since 1999 and shall now take more on a role
as a "private citizen". I look forward to returning to private life with
greater privacy and peace in Active Worlds. However, as for those objections
to my signatures, I will not remove my signatures. I will not answer any
further objections to that. I shall stand by my own signature.

That will be all. No further replies from myself will be made to this
thread. Thank you for your patience and may God bless you all. Have a good
evening (or day).

several projects, or towns, that I'd like for its location to be kept
secret. Can people put in coordinates to those locations without my
permissions? Obviously, I would not like that and consider it a violation of
my "privacy".

I just want to know how you will deal with those particular concerns. Thanks
for this project, though! It's an impressive project that I see a lot of
potentials for! :)

Crashing in Steel

Feb 14, 2006, 3:41am
I'm curious.. is there a website I can go to find out what Steel is about,
specifically what theme? I am just a world-hopper, akin to virtual
e-grasshopper. ;)

Requests for AWI to comment on this...

Feb 7, 2006, 3:34pm
I would like to cite the posting at
http://www.swcity.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=3876.msg67263#msg67263 which I
respectfully requests for AWI representatives to comment on...

Here is the full excerpt from Goober's posting in that particular thread:

-------------------

Actually, the campaign appears to be getting the job done! According to
Stacee, chrispeg is now lobbying for changes in AW, and Rick is considering
implementing them after they finish their other big projects (i.e. AW 4.1,
NewAW, etc). It may be a few months, but we definitely have an impact. As
Stacee put it, "It was good for opening the door....then everyone ran
through" ^_^

Might as well keep up the compliments, while Chris, Archy, and myself give
it that final shove at the Reunion! Who knew it could be so effective? :O

Strange email from Linn

Feb 9, 2006, 9:23pm
Um, why the hell are folks sending you insulting telegrams about pointless
crap? People, what the hell are you up to? Don't make this shit more worse,
okay?

At any rate, at first glance of the original posting in this thread prior to
any replies made to it by any other folks, I knew it wasn't linn who would
have done this on intent.

In fact, linn is a highly respected and prominent citizen who is very
trusted and honest. There is absolutely no way, and not even conceivable,
that she has done it on purpose. Therefore, I have already reached at
conclusion as much as other certain folks have arrived at that this is
nothing but simply a chain mail or whatever that are devised by malicious,
immature folks seeking to enjoy their satisification in seeing damages being
done to people not just in causing false alarms about its being virus but
also creating distrubance in the society, as well evident by the
circumstances surrounding the controvestories following the creation of this
particular thread without the victim's knowledge. Linn is not so unlike
others whom have been affected by this... she is latest victim.. and so are
you folks whose rushes to judgement is uncalled for...

We should not allow those stupid people to take advantage of us. I am
saddened to see that people, suddenly unnecessarily concerned and angry or
in any forms, sends such insulting grams to linn as stated in her earlier
posting in which I am replying to. This certainly reminds me of my earlier
conversation with my former boss (assuming that he is giving up the county
or something like that) in which he mentioned that humans are simply animals
that have such tendencies to bickers and violently reacts and whatsoever
even though people think we can change but the such violent and tempered
nature of humanity is not so unlike to that of animals, in which we can see
we are all Romans at heart (in reference to Romans' such unusual love of
violent sports).

It's quite sad... it's not unusual for any humans to simply rushes to
judgement without even investigating or at least reviewing the circumstances
further.

Notice to Alphaworld Users

I'm thinking this might have something to do with the fact that AWI is now
looking for someone to hire as the System Administrator / Tech Support.
Oddly enough, the day before the Jobs page was updated to announce a two
position to be opened for hiring, the welcome message was updated to the one
you quoted (except that it was still mentioning Janurary newsletter until at
least few days of Feburary passed before that particular part was finally
updated) and Alphaworld suddenly became a private world (closed) and it
remained for a period of at least few hours, give or take, and it suddenly
went back up on the same day!

Apparently it did not remained down until the date stated in that statement
you quoted from! Then the next day, I suddenly saw that they are hiring and
coincidentally enough one of the position appeared to be related to
"maintainence" and that is system administrator / tech support. I find it
odd. I smells something fishy here...

Oh, and no words from AWI on why this part of the announcement was left
in.... :O

Actually, you can opt to work for them from home. See
http://www.shamusyoung.com/aboutus/ for evidence of that. ;)

That page mentioned Shamus Young as work-at-home programmer for Activeworlds
Inc. This isn't first time I learned about that. Hamfon, or whoever it was
at the time after the end of a Tech Talk meeting (don't think it was part of
transcript... I think Mauz, who was transcripting the meeting, left before
that conversation after the meeting concluded), told me that he actually
worked at home when I mentioned my concern about moving to Massachusetts
office (at this time, I was considering a future possible career in
Activeworlds Inc. but later reverted to my original career goal of becoming
an urban planner, only to later also consider becoming an architect or
perhaps a history teacher at high school with respect to the infamous quote,
"Don't put all eggs in one basket.).

Anyway, my impression is that certain positions, possibly those in
accounting and etc., requires moving to Newburyport area to work in AWI
office, while other positions, most notably programming thanks to advent of
Internet enabling the exchanges and communications in relation to work,
allows those to remain at their home and do the work from there.

However, I think it's obvious even those positions does not mean you can
always do work all the time from home. For example, certain events or
situation may require travel.. for instance... I have seen pictures of
certain AWI employees being at certain events... I have seen those pictures
at swcity.net forum. I don't have url address to that thread right away so
you'll have to find them yourself but anyway those such jobs with respect to
working from home is really intriguing, considering that humans have spent
millennias working at workplace. You can bet that this is just a beginning
of a major change and transformation of our human society and civilization
on a scale far greater than those of Industrial Revolution and Neolithic
Revolution. After all, 21st century is the century of the future, a gateway
to a brave new world set in the future. O_O
