Xelagot 3.604 - bug fix for user list

Jul 24, 2004, 9:26pm
If you are universe caretaker and downloaded 3.603, please
re-download: I had a error in my code that stopped uni caretakers from
seeing the user list if it was not enabled for all. Fixed (thanks Anne
of DLP). I will update the web pages later, but the version now
available there is 3.604, the fixed one :)

Re: PLEASE VOTE AND SAVE THE WORLD FROM BUSH...

Jul 25, 2004, 1:51am
I have always tried to see human beings as having the same
full-fledged rights as other human beings. Laws differ from place to
place, I leave that to the lawmakers. But in a discussion like this,
green, yellow or red cards have no place: freedom of speech is not a
USA right, it is a universal right, often denied.

Laws and regulations are needed, surely, including green cards. But
does one realise that, in fact, the USA is populated by invadors from
Europe, and forcefully migrated populations from Africa, and people
searching refuge? And that, in most cases, to the detriment of the
people that lived in the land before these invasions? So who has
green card? Don't all people living in USA now, whatever their origin
or status, have the right to be respected? Or must one be
USA-certified before receiving a human birth right? Seems so :(

Lights will shine out through the box, remember that, walls don't

Well, not exactly :)

A "light box" as you call it might help you a little experiment with
the effects of direct lighting - which is related to the diffuse
property of the object (but the world directional lighting still
interferes), but there is no way it will help you experiment with
ambient, as only the world ambient light determines this. The only
way to do this properly is to change the world ambient and directional
light properties. VR is not real world, as AW implements the lights
(8 directional, which includes the world parallel directional light,
i.e. the sun, and leaves 7 others to your choice - and 1 ambient,
which is a world property) there is no way you can isolate a spot in
the world and call it a light box... with its own properties
independent of the world light properties.

There is no such thing as night or day mode as far as a particular
spot in the world is concerned, these are determined by global world
light properties. You can not create a box with different lighting
properties :)

I confirmed this too.

1) opened IE and pasted the url there. No problem, I got the
toothbrush.

2) opened AW 555, pasted the url in the built-in web browser. The url
got truncated and I got a server error.

3) sent myself this url through telegram. opened the telegram and
clicked on the url. AW crashed.

[View Quote] >But isn't it strange that the objects are being "teleported" to far
>underground instead of just disappearing?
>

What happens is that the object database in the world server uses a
two-byte (16 bit) integer field for storing altitudes. Values are in
cm, and the maximum positive value is 32767 which is 327.67 m,
increasing beyond this produces a negative number, for example 32768
is interpreted as -32768, 32769 as -32767 and so on, i.e. the number
wraps around from positive to negative. The world database does not
reject the object, as the altitude for all it knows is valid, only not
the one you expect, and no error message is produced.

The browser, on the other hand, works in floats (real numbers with
decimals), that do not have this wrapping mechanism, so as long as you
do not move away, it shows the object where you expect it to be.

It is certainly a bug, in my opinion, that the object does not get
rejected. Whether this is the task of the browser or world server is
a matter of programming strategy. I would assign this task to the
world server, because it owns the database.

Alex

Very strange bug..

Sep 12, 2004, 9:35pm
Then it is a browser task. I have no idea, since I do not know the
protocol of the code sent, what the world receives :)

I never tried that. My thoughts on that, not knowing the code AW uses
and not having tried it, are:

1) if you try to build terrain altitudes beyond the limits of -32768
and 32767 with terrain offset 0, maybe the same happens.

2) if you build terrain within those limits (-327.68 m and 327.67 m),
but set a terrain offset between -300 and 300 (which is the range for
offset and does not wrap), then you can practically exceed the +/-
327m limits because the world keeps the terrain data separate from the
offset data. That is, terrain offset is added by the browser to the
the terrain altitude kept in the world database, giving you
effectively a +/- 300 metres extra margin.

major upgrade Xelagot 3.607

Nov 28, 2004, 3:38pm
This message concerns some x1.zip files downloaded on Sunday Nov. 28th
2004.

The first x1.zip I uploaded contained errors. You will recognise it
because it contains a User folder. If it does not contain this folder,
then you need do nothing and need not continue reading (you may if you
are curious, but it does not apply to you).

If x1.zip does contain the User folder, discard it and download x1.zip
again. Two cases are possible if you had already unzipped the files of
the faulty zip.

1) you had unzipped it over your existing x1 installation to upgrade
it. If you see both a User and a Script folder, check to see it the
Script folder still has all your old scripts, If it has, then move the
scripts to the User folder and delete the Script folder which you do
not need any more. Unzip the new good x1.zip onto the application
folder, and run the bot application to complete the installation.
Then stop the application, and follow the upgrade instructions on this
page if you had not already done so:
http://www.imatowns.com/xelagot/xlgtopic_usbd.html

2) you had unzipped the faulty zip into an empty folder - if you
attempted to run the bot, it would throw access violation messages in
a loop and could only be shut down with Task Manager. Just delete the
old contents (except for the new x1.zip if it is there) and unzip
again. Run the bot application to complete the installation.

If you are in doubt whether you had the good or bad zip because you
deleted it, download it again and follow the above instructions. The
new good zip was uploaded only a few hours after the first bad one,
about 6 pm GMT (4 pm VRT) on Sunday november 28th.

Av99bot and SrvcXlgBot do not have this problem.

Sorry for this mess!

CP, sorry if it is inconvenient for you. A link to my What's New page
is very convenient for me:

1) it saves bandwidth here and in other newsservers and forums,
especially as I cross-post.
2) it allows me to write extensive descriptions, with links to other
pages. This is in everyone's benefit. I would not be able to do this
here.
3) the "What's new" page centralises the info, and is also available
from the x1 bot's menu "help > omline > what's new"

So I will carry on posting the link to my page. If you do not wish to
activate the link from your newsreader, you can copy it to the
clipboard, close the reader and open the web browser, then paste the
url there... very complicated, but saves in memory usage.

WOW, this page is great! It reminds me of my childhood. My mother
was a Uruguayan consul in Buenos Aires, and she used to read us aloud
letters the consulate received from utter nut cases. One case I
remember: the writer seriously petitioned the Uruguayan government to
change the course of the Rio de la Plata (the miles wide estuary
separating Uruguay and Argentina) to solve social and moral depravity.
Times have not changed that much, I see :)

That's not a bug, it's by design. If the parent window does not have
the focus, you first need to give it focus. I chose on purpose not to
use MSWindow objects in most cases of buttons, because they use up
graphic resources. Delphi buttons, on the other hand, do not rely on
the MSWindows api and do not use up graphic resources, the down side
being that if their parent form does not have the focus (or in other
words, is not in the foreground), they do not catch mouse events.

MicroOlap has updated its dbx4mysql.dll driver, used by Xelagots to
connect to a MySQL database. If you are using this driver, you can
download the update (version 1.7, 1st March 2005) directly from here:

http://www.imatowns.com/xelagot/dbx4mysql.zip

New in this version, among many other things, is that you can attach
the port number to the hostname in the connection parameters (if the
port is not the standard one), for example:
HostName=localhost:2345

The Xelagot SQL introduction page, which also contains a link to this
driver, is here:
