Full tower Case: $70
Duron 700 overclockable to god knows how fast: $30
GF2MX: $80
2656mb of PC133 SDRAM (Yes kiddies, we don't use SIMMs anymore): $40
SB Live Value sound kard of death: $20
Abit motherboard of doom: $125
CD Drive: $20
Floppy drive: $8
CPU fan: $9
56k modem as opposed to 14.4 modem: $20
Kickass brand new 40 gig HDD: $200 at most

That's dirt cheap for a hybrid top of the line/midrange system. I built a similar system in December for a little over $700 without
monitor when this stuff was still expensive.

They'll direct you in the right direction for asking about it. They might even PAY you (Unless you'll do it for free of course)

One of the 3.x releases has/will extend it to 200+ I believe, but we can't have it going too far because then the damned social

logon and make life a living hell for everyone else.

PKs have less than 100 members, and m0e is the only one I know of viscious enough to track his prey via the contact list (I've been
there since the day I bought this citizenship). 200 is the final change, and it IS implemented I believe. Make sure you're using the

Bad idea. In this age of 120 gig hard drives and 1.5GHz CPUs, tourists will be installing and reinstalling like theres no tommorrow
to get citizenships.
Heck, it takes under a half hour to install Windows now, so even if it does get rigged to work on a per-winderz basis, reformat
gives you a blank slate. In short, if toursits want cits, they have to pay.

Yeah. And I, for one have a liking for keeping my computers as sleek, fast and powerful as possible. This is achieved through
overclocking, buttloads of high quality RAM, a RAID hard drive system, etc. Now, for 99% of the people that operate this level of
system, it's useless fluff. But for me, I use EVERY CPU cycle doing genetics work for Stanford University. The additional time that
gets spent downloading and processing HTML may not seem like much, but it adds up. That's CPU time that will never get devoted to an
ything useful. When the Palomino 1.7GHz's come out later this year, I'll complain less. But since BOTH CPUs will be crunching genes,
the problem will still be there. Think about it. Would you rather my computer a) Decode your HTML posts or b) Have the potential to
design a gene that proves to be the holy graal that strikes down HIV/AIDS or cancer? This computer still gets everyday uses, but I
go FAR out of my way to make sure that they're so lightly CPU intensive that it isn't funny. My gene crunching has a higher CPU
priority than AW does. Please, concider that you may be disrupting the chance of survival for one of your descendents. This lowly
computer will not find the cure, but it will narrow the choices. Now before you get all on me about Stanford having the ability to
do their own work... There are THOUSANDS of people devoting their computers to the same thing, in what I concider the most noble
distributed computing project ever. Does Stanford have thousands of high end computers sitting around to do this on? I thought not.

You grow up, and realize that every action you make has it's repercussions somewhere in the world. If you would like to pursue your
arguments any further, you can concider yourself filtered. The same goes for anybody else that feels like backing his opinions.

Issues

Jul 7, 2001, 4:56am
Okay, so I forgot to bring these up at techtalk. There are some pretty major issues that definitely need to be addressed

1) Collision detection, in particular, climbing logic. Either it lags the holy livin shit out of me with a ton of number crunching
and the higher priority processes drown it out or it's just slow by nature. Takes about 30 seconds to climb a staircase... So, I fly
a lot.

2) Can we get a Linux client in here? OGL only of course, until some wank takes the time and ports the D3d API (And is promptly
murdered for bringing M$ software into the Linux world) I can't see anything that would truly stop it, with the exception of RW
using Windows-specific calls or maybe some Windows DLLs that I don't know about AW using.

3) In the help files, midis can be looped. In practice, THEY CAN'T (not with the documented code anyway)

4) Create texture (and probably color too) to a named object doesn't work, help files suggest that it can. In reality, it appears
that a complex astart/adone command is required.

5) Probably a dozen other things that I can't think of right now, I'll post the rest as I think of them.

BTW: Regarding the bug in #1, my system specs are
AMD Duron 700 running stable and ice cold at 1200MHz
256mb PC150 at 100
SB Live Value
RAID hard drives (In other words, I assure you, the hardware is not causing the slowdown with the possible exception of el crappo
cache on CPU)

I've tested it on the following video systems, all are 32mb unless noted
Quadro II MXR (Same chip as GeForce II MX with slighly different voltage) solo
Quadro II MXR with Jaton Trident PCI secondar
GeForce II MX solo
GeForce II MX with Jaton Trident PCI
GeForce II GTS 64mb
TNT2 m64 16mb
Jaton Trident PCI (no 3d) running in AW3.1's hardware emulation
TNT2 Ultra
TNT2 Vanta
TNT2 Vanta LT 16mb

Okay, so I'm an nVidia whore, so sue me :)

I tested under the following software conditions:
Normal processes (including Genome crunching)
Sterile (Nothing but Winderz and AW)

ALL configurations have yeilded the same results. I also have another system that I seem to recall having the same problem, but it's
IDE controllers are dead so I'll check that out when I get a replacement board for it.

These two, I was mostly concerned about the misinformation that the helpfiles produced.

Yet another one that bothers me, though it doesn't deal with the software.

On Alpha's object path, the sprites all seem to be in really badly compressed JPEGs. This causes the mask to make any transparency
behind it completely transparent and the texture not to extend to the edge of the mask, therefore giving a really ugly visual
effect.

I assume that the glass over glass triangle crap (for lack of a better term) was discussed before I arrived, because there was a
rather stunning example of it right in front of Roland's avatar.

A new command

One problem: Tourists.
[View Quote]

A new command

Jul 8, 2001, 5:52pm
I believe (it would be most efficient to) that AW's command parser is completely seperate from the citnum. This means, that every
time we trigger an action, whether it be create, bump or activate, our browser would neccessitate checking our citnum to be sure
that we are allowed to actually send telegrams. This would probably slow down the interface (Correct me if I'm wrong about that) and
potentially allow tourists to send telegrams via cracked browsers.
[View Quote]

A new command

Jul 9, 2001, 3:46am
No, it's a good idea, just it needs to be implemented in a bulletproof fashion. Now that I think about it, tourists wouldn't be able
to actually SEND them, just access the telegram window itself, regardless of the state of the browser (cracked or not), the
uniserver would toss out the tele.

Blah, I wonder if Roland would ever implement it against order. They'd never notice...

Even if they did, they'd be commiting suicide if they canned him, Roland has little concept of how some parts of the code work,
imagine being someone else trying to interpret all of his code (Especially if he doesn't comment)

CMM... The post is old and has been replied to already. Also, since they're probably plugged into the mail server by 100 or gigabit
ethernet (Which I also assume is their method for connecting their world servers to the uniserver) any HTML message would be a split
second deal for them.

Move command addition

*sigh* At least you havn't weasled yourself into their payroll yet. Another brickhead to be bashed open.

Just because you sucked yourself into a personal favor doesn't mean they're perfect. In fact, you've increased the problem.Given
them one less reason to listen to the citizens and world owners. You got a freebie.

This also means you are a LIABILITY to the company that you defend so much. Also, does giving free stuff to suckups sound like fair
practice? I don't approve of free worlds, with the exception of trials PERIOD. They charge TONS to those who are honest and give it
free to the little bastards that suck up to them, win pathetically easy games, etc. THIS is why world prices went up. Giving away so
damned many of them.

Erm... I believe that makes you an off-the-books employee (AKA volunteer) if the project is still managed by them. Your opinion is
biased either way. Those of us who look for "negativity" can see both sides of the argument, but there just isn't all that much good
stuff to see. And we aren't in it to find good stuff, we're in it to fix the bad.

Get Rid Of...

Jul 19, 2001, 10:57pm
AW's pointless worlds, a fun topic.
90% of them are for corperate suits, not leavin anytime soon. Alphaworld may not be hosted on it's own seperate server, but I'm
rather positive that the corperate suits get their own high-priority server to run their worlds on. Think 1.33GHz and 1024 megs of
RAM while the general hsoting servers are 486's with 16 megs of RAM runnin Win95 :)

BTW, empty worlds don't cause lag because they aren't sucking bandwidth, except for the heartbeat to the uniserver, which is
logically over a thick LAN as opposed to wasting bandwidth and using the outside line just to get it turned around and sent right
back. Or it SHOULD be that way.
