Life imprisonment for hacking crimes

Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of things, it seems that corporate and
economic
interests are becoming more important that the those of the individual. The
life of a single
individual barely makes a blip on the screen when money is concerned. I
doubt this proposed
law will make it to life (this time), unaltered, however you can count on
governments/corporate
interests to attemp to gain as much out of the recent world events as
possible.

My 2 cents worth.

Mipmaps, Use them or Loose them!

Mipmaps on for me. Didn't like them at first, but quickly got used to them.
Now I don't like them off.

STOP it with....

Oct 22, 2000, 10:54pm
I rarely visit Alphaworld and have not noticed the problems expressed here.
However I can sympahize with those who find drastic and frequent backdrop
changes annoying. I have made several backdrops myself which many people.
seem to like. Check out http://members.home.com/lloydda/virtechs/ for some
examples, or visit Jynx's world "Jyngo" for another example. I would be
willing to create a series of subtly changing backdrops for Alphaworld if
enough people desire it and Activeworlds will accept them.

Re: Adobe Atmosphere (formerly Anarchy) debutes

I took it for a "spin". Your right, it looks kinda nice but it's got a long
way to go to catch up with AW. But with a big gun like Adobe behind it,
maybe it could be a contender someday.

Backdrops for new version

May 20, 2001, 7:47pm
Version 3.2 of the browser will support "skyboxes" as stated by Roland in
the latest Techtalk. Skyboxes are objects which render as a backdrop and
are always centered over the user (you). They can be any shape (usually a
dome) or size (within reason, I presume) and can be textured the same as any
other object (they can have more than 1 texture). They will also end the
"slipping" effect as you turn. Roland stated that the older backdrop method
will still be available, however he has not yet decided whether the use of a
skybox will automatically cancel the use of the regular backdrop method.
Most people at the talk appeared to want that option set manually by the
world owner. The benefit of having two backdrops (both skybox and old
method) would be that a skybox can have transparent areas (just like any
object) and the older backdrop could show through. This would allow for
some interesting effects although it would eat up some memory.

This info is what I've garnered from the latest techtalk records. If I'm
mistaken on any feature, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Please stop

I have a similar system, PII 350 with an old 8 meg Matrox card. The only
problem I've ever had so far is that once in a while I run out of video
memory (which is understandable). Actually, I'm so surprised my Matrox card
has lasted this long without any glitches. I keep seeing so many people
complaining about these souped up cards that I may stick with Matrox in the
future.

Help please:)--Fair World Server Pricing?

Oct 22, 2001, 9:53pm
It's true that a number of hosts already exhist. Yet many of these tend to
be somewhat expensive, especially for many of the "younger" AW users. That
is why a group of well known AW cit's including myself and Count Dracula are
involved with a hosting service of our own. It provides very reasonable
pricing. For example: 1 World Server is $5.00/month. Additional Worlds
are only $3.00/month. 200 meg Path is $10.00/month. Server and Path is
$12.50/month.
If you wish to see more info...check out myactiveworlds.com

I couldn't help plugging our service here. :) But it also gives alphabit
phalpha some info on the competition.

Help please:)--Fair World Server Pricing?

Oct 22, 2001, 9:55pm
Here is a proper link.... www.myactiveworlds.com

Alright...

Jan 3, 2002, 2:39pm
I agree. An increase in price such as this would require much more effort
by AWC to keep current with the demands of it's users. Perhaps this
increase indicates a change in AWC's direction. In the past AWC has
appeared to place more emphasis on the needs of it's "corporate" clients.
It could be that in the current economic climate, the "corporate" clients
are no longer providing enough income in order to sustain AWC and now AWC
has decided to change it's focus to what many have hoped for for a long
time....the average users. If this is true, and AWC has decided to make
"joe/josephine" user it's "Customer #1" (and make them pay for it), we
should expect to see a greater interest from AWC in keeping us happy.
Although I don't expect we will see huge leaps in advances to AW anytime
soon, I do think that users will be less tolerant of complacency on the part
of AW towards it's largest (paying!) group of clients. If this is indeed
what this price restructure is all about, it could spell very good things to
come, or doom, for AW. It is a gamble for AWC to ask it's users to pay so
much more. I'd be willing to pay, provided I see results. Dare I say
it.....The Corporate Client is dead!!! Long live the Average User!!! We
will see.

ATTN: NoMad -

Feb 3, 2002, 4:02am
My website is down due to the fact that I am an at Home subscriber. at Home
went bankrupt and my local provider (Rogers Cable) needed to transfer to its
own system of servers. Therefore my at Home provided website no longer
functions. I am taking advantage of this downtime to update my site and
plan to make it available again in the future.

The future of AW?

May 6, 2002, 11:53pm
Hi, I've been going without much AW for a while now (I let my world and
citizens lapse several months ago, more due to other commitments than due to
AWC status). Now I'm getting an itch to make objects again and I'm
wondering if I should fork over the money to AWC to renew. I've been
waiting for positive signs since the major changes in pricing, now I read
that AWC is merging with the makers of Stuffit software. Huh? I'm more
uncertain than ever as to the future of AW. New pricing scheme, apparent
reduction in numbers of users, no more techtalks, no word on 3.3, and other
negative signs have me worried. Can someone with some business knowledge
please explain what AWC might be up to in this latest move. Better still,
someone at AWC please send a word to enlighten all of us. (How I miss
Rolands techtalk...at least it provided a glimpse of AWC and the feeling
that someone at AWC was willing to endure contact with it's users)

The elimination of TechTalks

May 11, 2002, 2:23pm
Roland is leaving after 3.3? Is this a fact or rumour? Can you tell us
anything about "9 9 9"?

If this is true, I'll add another tickmark in the list of negative signs
related to Activeworlds.

when do we get 3.3?

May 19, 2002, 10:38pm
Surely the question of "why?" was put to Roland at the time. Did he respond
with an answer? Is he planning to leave because he is getting tired of
working on AW and wishes to seek new horizons, or because he has problems
with AWC management? I doubt he gave any answer, but any insight from those
there at the time would be helpful.

New Paths

Jun 16, 2002, 12:52pm
New paths/textures that fit with new terrain being made available at
http://members.rogers.com/nomad-1/index.htm . Note: Vertex maps are also
being made available so users can more easily alter the paths as they wish.

Just the start of a set for now....more to follow.

AWLD independent director vote results?

Jul 12, 2002, 10:58pm
Could someone with some business knowledge please fill us all in in on what
this document is saying. I, for one, don't understand business bafflegab.
After reading it, it looks to me like either 1) Rick and JP are still with
AWC, 2) Rick and JP are no longer with AWC, or 3) Rick and JP are no longer
with AWC but might be be with AWC again. Speaking in general, it's no
wonder companies can "cook" the books to the tune of billions of $ these
days.....few people can figure out what the hell is going on with them.
