Hi,
I have noticed that alot of people complain about the Cy Awards being a popularity contest, becuase of the public voting, so i want to take a poll over it. This may not affect the Cy Awards Voting system at all, i am just interested in knowing. Poll: Do you think the Cy Awards Voting System should be public, or should it be an internal judging system? LilAlpha Phalpha Cy Awards Public Relations It's Poll TimeAug 7, 2001, 6:10pm
accually Cy Awards is seperate from AWC, therefore it would have no formal
represenative to the cy awards under it's charter. What i am attempting to do here however is open up communication between the Community, and the Cy Awards Committee, and act at the represenative for both groups. where is AW goingJan 2, 2002, 10:04pm
My opinion is to trust in AWCOM in this matter becuase they have the figures
and we don't. If in a few months they discover they are wrong they might lower the prices instead of shutting down due to lack of user growth(and more income.) I am no expert in financial matters and I am only in the 9th grade. Sure AW will probably lose alot of it's valuable citizens over this, but thats thier problem right? If they WANT to keep thier current citizens AND get new ones, they WILL lower thier prices if this dosent work out. IF they don't it could be the end of it anyways. So I believe it is best to leave this up to the people at AWCOM who know what they are talking about, who have all the facts, and are trying to save thier own jobs, all the while trying to keep us happy. I think we're just making it worse by bickering of this, i would think it would be a tough thing to balance for them... If they run out of money...there is no more AW for us, If we all leave due to excessive prices, then they run outof money anyways. Let them make thier own mistakes and learn from them, after all it's also thier future they are dealing with not just ours. Grow up people, you can't have everything. LilAlpha Phalpha Other universesJan 3, 2002, 2:46am
For all of us who are renewing, we dont know it will be 9.50 a month. The
prices for us could and possibly will be cheaper. However if worse comes to worse I plan to emmigrate to Outerworlds and start over there. I feel sory for people like Comit, who have put so much work into AW and now has to leave. All the rest of us can hope for is that our renewal prices will be cheaper. If not i want all of you who can afford to stay to keep the community together untill i get a job... LilAlpha Phalpha [View Quote] Who will leaveJan 4, 2002, 6:54am
Dear AW Community,
Due to circumstances beyond my control (we all know what thoes are) I will be leaving aw -permanently- when my citizenship expires on the 20th of June. I do not believe these prices changes are fair, although i can see why they are needed. I was hoping the prices for currently regestered citizens would be lower, but the chances of that are slim. I really with there were some way around this, but there isnt... It just dosen't seem real. I cannot afford the new prices as my parents are paying for my citizenship currently and they won't pay $114 a year. I have been an active citizen of AW, and an active member of the community for 6 years this comming March. I have made lots of friends, built many things, and I did many things here I could never dream of doing in real life. I have learned to program here with the help of friends. I have made objects, and avatars. I have almost lived a life in AW. I am a member of the Cy Comittee, the AWComReg, and a former member of the AWEC. I put many hours into all of them. I will continue to serve the community untill July 20, 2001 at 8:29PM in which my citizenship expires. I hope everything i have worked at in ActiveWorlds for the past 6 years wasn't in vein. It's just a shame that i have to leave it all behind, there were so many things i hadn't done yet... So, unless things change you can consider this my first farewell (I'll prolly have another one in June :) ) It's been a great 6 years! For all of you who are staying, and for thoes who have to leave, Good luck to all of you, and godspeed. LilAlpha Phalpha Let me tell of a tale 'bout a man named George..Jan 3, 2002, 6:05am
Yes, facter enlightened a few of us that this is all part of a larger plan
that "we should enjoy" if AW lasts long enough to see it through. For all of you complaining, if you love AW enough money is no object, however if you think it is to much then leave, theres no compromise. Apparently this has been in planning for a few months, since Facter knows about it. He didn't give us any details, but I hope it works whatever it is. Rick has saved AW before and hes gonna do it again (hopefully). For all you AWCOM folks and the entire AW Community, good luck and godspeed! Facter: oh yeah, invite me to join then ignore me chris =P SW Chris: y Goober King: Guess I'll be staying a bit longer.... hay Facter :) SW Comit: ^_^ Syntax: lol hi Fac SW Chris: oh there you are. Facter: aye guys SW Chris: Sorry for missing your join request. :\ SW Comit: lol chris you always do that LilAlpha Phalpha: hi facter Facter: its okay, just giving you shit :) Goober King: hehe Facter: ok SW Chris: I was rereading my Talking Points column. Syntax: yea he always does that Facter: i cant relaly comment on this muchin all honesty :) SW Chris: That is my one and only flaw. ^_^ LilAlpha Phalpha: <cough> Syntax: lol "hub-bub" Facter: reading their statement well SW Chris: I think you knew about it several months ago. :) But we were talking about the possibility of appealing to another corporation to buy AWC out. SW Chris: like Sony or AOL/Time Warner. Facter: I'd say that what is written there, isnt an excuse, and is probably the truth - i mean, rick signed it, and I no matter what, I have never, ever known Rick to be a deceptive man - its not in him SW Comit: Time Warner would be interested? SW Chris: I believe every word he said. SW Comit: AOL I can see, they buy a lot of stuff SW Chris: They are a media company... *shrug* Facter: yeah, so do I SW Chris: He's just not a businessman, it seems. Goober King: I don't think any of us here is in doubt of him... It's just that do they really need to go that high? Goober King: Do they truly understand the ramifications of all this? Facter: I know, that there is more to the story..i actualyl know a shitload of stuff that you guys dont, company stuff..i know some plans etc etc that they have in the works, and I can also see how this fits in with some of those plans SW Chris: Well those plans won't work if Ol' George is still a rulin from England. :) SW Chris: (see community newsgroup for an explaination) *shrug* Goober King: The letter made it sound like Rick was just expecting the rest of the community to go along with this scheme... LilAlpha Phalpha: LOL SW Chris: I think he was hoping against hope that most people would understand. Facter: ricks a fukin great guy, honestly - if he thinks he's doing the right thing, then that is what he in his heart believes - I had the opportunity to get to know him in person, and all I know is that the man is a truely good soul SW Comit: hmm I can't see why they need the sharp revenue change, are they planning on hiring 20 programmers or something? Facter: goober SW Chris: Lara's not happy that's for sure. Facter: I dont think he's expecting anything SW Chris: tortured soul as well. :\ Facter: and I'm damn sure, that he knew that there were going to be alot of unhappy people Goober King: Lots of people aren't happy, Chris SW Chris: What would dumping the 3d homepages program and selling excess bandwidth do to help things? Facter: oh man, how would you feel having to do something like this, seriously ? Goober King: Frankly, I would have at least given everyone a bit more notice that one whole day :P Facter: have any of you guys looked at the economy lately? im amazed AW didnt fold along with the rest of the internet companies in the past year SW Chris: Read the Talking Points article. :) Facter: notice for what though goober? Facter: if they are going to do it,t hey are going to do it - what difference is one day, a week, or a month going to do? Facter: you all have cits, im sure you have time left on them SW Chris: Looking at it from Rick's perspective, yeah Facter you're right. Facter: look Facter: im not taking sides here SW Comit: afaw while I read talking points Facter: one of the hardet fukin things i did was go to work for that company, and basically ostracise myself fromt he community SW Chris: neither are we we hope. Syntax: He said ostrich ^_^ SW Chris: .... Goober King: *smacks Syn* Syntax: lol Syntax: Too bad Comit is afaw, he woulda laughed :-P Facter: but ive had the unique perspective to be in on things that you guys dont know, and am privvy to a plan they have that will, if it works, probably end up knocking your socks out - if they survive that long..which I guess is allt hey are trying to do n Facter: I think its jsut a wait and see thing really Goober King: The problem is, Facter, we've heard that line before... Facter: so thats all I'm going to do...wait and see Goober King: Same here SW Chris: I'll be praying it does. But I really wish he'd explain it. Facter: the thing is goober - it hasnt been someone you trust telling you that line Facter: I'd like to think you guys trust my opinion sometimes, even if I am naive to believe so =P Goober King: True enough... but then, Rick and JP should already be people I can trust :P Facter: well, you dont, and thats reality Facter: its shame, but you dont Syntax: I think you have some good points fac Facter: hell, i dont trust bill gates and i still use his stupid software SW Chris: but Facter.. Facter: what I *do* trust is you guys SW Chris: we don't have a _choice_ =P Goober King: I'd love to trust them to, honestly... But I just can't given their past performance Facter: of course you have a choice man Facter: use AW or leave SW Chris: not to use Microsoft's software Facter: pay what they want, or leave SW Chris: that's what I waws talking about. : ) Facter: let it fail, or let it live Facter: there is always a choice, its jsut not always the choice YOU want SW Chris: touche Goober King: I guess real life had to intrude on the virtual one at some point *smirk* Facter: at some stage you guys will have to choose to go, or stay SW Chris: interesting take on that situation. Facter: yeh, it sucks when that happens Syntax: bah Syntax: But what if AW goes go belly-up? SW Chris: I for one will hang on till it's not worth it anymore. Facter: fuck, we've stuck with it this long Syntax: What will I do with this 3 years of work? Goober King: Then we move on, Syn Facter: if it goes belly up? SW Chris: And after that I'll keep a close eye on what AWC is doing. Syntax: What will i do with all this work? Facter: hmmm Syntax: 400k+ of objects built? Goober King: Remember it LilAlpha Phalpha: Facter if it goes "belly up" will the other universes go down too? SW Chris: would uniservers still work if there's no company left to pay dues to? Goober King: They certainly wouldn't develop anymore Facter: well, seriously...if it went belly up financially? rick and JP would still own it. It wouldnt disappear I dont tihnk..they could fire everyone at the office,a dn keep it running probably Goober King: You think OW or City4All has any programmers of Roland's caliber? :P SW Chris: but it'd be a nice museum piece. Have your own personal uniserver just to preserve this city. Facter: it jsut would enver,e ver grow, and it would soon, ina year or two, be a meuseum and obsolete Facter: goober Facter: theres a difgference - what the hell do they need bloody programmers for ? they buy the software from aw ? LilAlpha Phalpha: would need a uniserver, mabey just a galaxy Facter: then go to another universe guys Facter: there are plenty out there, ow is a fun place Facter: as for the stuff here ? SW Chris: Well we're rootin for AW. Goober King: That's what I mean, Fac... if AW stops, they take all the other universes with it Facter: Get a world, back up the work you did in here, and re-bot it in a different universe with the same object path Facter: eh Facter: goober SW Chris: :\ SW Chris: We can't afford a p500 Syntax: lol Goober King: We'll be stuck in 3.2 for eternity LilAlpha Phalpha: LOL Syntax: yea this city is 800 x 600 coords Facter: I hav been to universes that have never been paid for, lets not be naive here SW Comit: back SW Comit: 500x850+ for the hundreth time >_< SW Chris: ah, he catches on. LilAlpha Phalpha: LOL Syntax: Go up and read my funny comment, COmit :-P SW Chris: It is a last-ditch option though. SW Comit: I did Syntax: ^_^ Goober King: I know that... But AW is the only one actually *developing* the software... if AW goes stagnant, so will all the other Universes SW Chris: only should the community itself cease to exist. Facter: yes? Facter: of course? SW Comit: as for the UniverseX, David16 runs it Facter: I dont see the argument here ? SW Comit: with dennis and magical SW Chris: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Facter: so it goes belly up? no more AW ? Facter: let me ask you something Facter: so what ? SW Chris: to clarify on Goober's part... no more new tech from AW. Syntax: ah well.. Syntax: I'll just pay for one month of AW a year.. Facter: what, do you guys love this place so much that you'd miss it ? Goober King: No, because once development stops, then interest wanes and the community disappears SW Chris: Yeah! :) Facter: right Syntax: Fac..yes Facter: the community tends to die right ? Goober King: You tell me, Fac... I've spent 5+ years here Facter: then stop your bitching, keep supporting them for as long as you feel you are morally able to, or financially able to, and see where it takes you Facter: because the only way its going to survive is by following their game plan Syntax: Yea I guess your right. Facter: theres no question about that Facter: what the hell choice do you guys have? its a business? ither support them or dont, stay, ro leave - its pretty simple SW Comit: they outa just cut staff....look at Motorola, a major communication company. They had finical problems so they cut staff, you didn't see them jacking the prices on their computer parts, they got too much competition Goober King: That's all well and good, but if I decide to play along, it won't make much of a difference if nobody else does :P Facter: comit Syntax: yea i guess.. Goober King: They don't have that much of a staff to cut, Comit :P Facter: read what you just said SW Chris: It is also a way of life. Facter: plese note, that your talking to someone that worked for them until two or so month ago, and read the line you jsut wrote Facter: ahem. hello. people. unemployed individual here. Syntax: lol duh SW Chris: Welcome to the No Spin Zone. SW Comit: welp, dunno what to say about that...it happens SW Chris: I think he was pointing out that they alread DID cut staff. Facter: well yes, but if you guys think that all f this is sudden, jsut review the past year or so and you'll see its not Syntax: Guess we'll have to pay if we want the city. Goober King: Smooth, Comit :P Facter: ahem. well. yes, that was my point exactly. SW Chris: Well I'm savin. Syntax: *shrugs* Syntax: same Syntax: ugh but its like $18 a month in Canada :-(( Goober King: I'm renewing ASAP, so I don't have to pay until next year :) SW Chris: ahh Syn... give Facter a break. LilAlpha Phalpha: do they really need 5 programmers tho, werent they doing fine with just roland? Syntax: hehe I have until October... SW Chris: He's been through that all night I bet. Facter: but...I have faith in Rick, in all honesty. alot of times I didnt agree with him, and sometimes I still dont..but if this is what he thinks he can do, then I'll believe him. He saved this place from disappearing once before, and I reckon he probablyd SW Chris: August for me. SW Comit: they got 5? wow didn't know that =P Syntax: Well..HamFon, Roland, Nanodragon... Facter: has enough lvoe..no, nto probably, he fukin adores this place and this community, you have no idea - i reckon he can do it again Syntax: err Facter: five Facter: hamfon, roland, shamus, nanodragon and grimm as contractor SW Comit: what's a nanodragon? lol Syntax: oh right Facter: a very small dragon Facter: :) SW Comit: heh =P Syntax: >_< Goober King: You also gotta remember that everyone raised the same ruccus back when they first introduced the $20/yr fee, and the community managed to survive that too Syntax: Would that be a lizard? :-D SW Comit: Hey facter I thought you left AW cause you found a better job? Facter: yep, it did - and, aftr thgat, it actually made money through investment, and even went over the blackline for a short time til the market died SW Comit: I didn't follow up on the story well Facter: no SW Chris: Would the MMORPG comparison hold up here Facter? Subscribers to those services pay around 10 bucks a month as well. Facter: i left AW because I had other things in my life I wanted to do Facter: it was a mutual compromise between all parties involved SW Comit: mmm I thought that implied as another job Facter: other things in life do not necessarily always mean a 9-5 job my friend..no, im happily writing music, and doing scifi stories...and im about to move over to London, and start exploring Europe for a while :) SW Comit: mmm those MMORPGs are worth 10 a month, though..it must be, most of them have millions of users O_O SW Comit: well not most SW Comit: lots... Facter: chris, yes, that comparison could hold up Syntax: Speaking of MMORPG's.... Facter: *waiting for his SoL CD to arrive* Syntax: I hear Helbreath calling my name, lol SW Comit: but I thought *you* left AW, they didn't lay you off... Facter: mmmmm Facter: its long story, and not really one that I think is up fer discussion - lets just say that we all had to do things, and we parted on good terms, and I enjoyed working there SW Chris: ahhhh SW Comit: np Facter: but in all honesty, i think I rpefer now to just be one of you guys :) SW Chris: sounds good. Goober King: hehe SW Chris: Eep's not around to bug you either. ^_^ SW Comit: lol Syntax: lol SW Comit: if he did I'd bump warp him to my sfx hell Facter: h, and i've been gettin in some damn good EQ in my time off too..hehehe SW Chris: I'm glad he's gone. Facter: hehe Facter: eep? SW Chris: yes... Goober King: He didn't leave AW entirely... SW Chris: all he did was moan and complain. Goober King: Or did he? Facter: I actually think hes okay, always made things interesting SW Chris: And if you saw that masochistic post about what he does in his spare time on Usenet... Facter: he just gave me the absolute shit is all :) LilAlpha Phalpha: LOL yes he did Facter: hay Goober King: I thought he was just kicked out of the NGs... SW Comit: Grace Mace would be a good addition to our conversation, too bad he's not here =P Syntax: lmao SW Comit: *shakes head* SW Chris: heh well don't worry. It was the exact same stuff he pulled in the AW NGs. Facter: hes a pudgy young guy with nothing but his computer for companionship SW Chris: :( LilAlpha Phalpha: accually, all of eep's posts had a point, they werent just complaints Facter: hes gotta get his anger out soemhow :) Facter: and SW Comit: lol pudgy Facter: hes quite intelligent SW Chris: he's got a lot of it. Facter: an idiot, but quite intelligent Goober King: So smart, he's stupid :) SW Comit: legless you SW Chris: intelligence should have some mind to not take out his anger on the defenseless. But that's another story. Facter: thats not intelligence Facter: thats wisdom Facter: note I did not say he was wise, there is a huge difference :) SW Chris: I figured the two went hand in hand. Goober King: That's social intelligence... something that I find a lot of people are lacking :P SW Chris: :) Facter: not at all ! SW Comit: >_< Facter: wisdom and intelligence are two completly seperate beings SW Comit: wisdsom is the intellegence of using/applying intellegence Facter: they go hand in hand with *time* maybe, but its not a given thing SW Comit: so now what? SW Comit: ... Facter: god, look at this world - if intelligence went with wisdom, no one would of invented an atomic bomb, or they would of buried it forever :) Goober King: Well, folks... You're right XP is super-fast, and can be customized for the "power-user" or

I seriously doubt that rumor, becuase in space if there is noting to accel
you, you maintain constant speed. However, gravity affects 2 or more objetcs no matter the distance. So, assuming the universe is a sphere, or even if it isn't, gravity will eventually slow down the speed of expansion and one day will bring it back into a singularity for the cycle to begin again. I read in a library book that according to the red-shift (Doppler effect), the universe has started to slow down. Scientists compare it to galaxies which are closer, and show more current light, than to galaxies farther away, and have older light(longer way to go), and have determined that the red-shift in the colser galaxies is lest than that of the galaxies farther away. In conclusion, this means expansion is slowing down, and one day in the distant....distant future will turn to blue shift. The greater the blue-shift, the faster the object is moving towards us. So, this latest theory of yours dosent really add up... LilAlpha Phalpha [View Quote] FREE OBJECT FOR WORLD OWNERSJan 9, 2002, 10:33pm
Hmm, nothing in here I believe is true. The believe the Big Bang Theory,
that the universe started out as a single point, a singularity, at the center of our universe it is exapnding still now, but the expansion is slowing, and will eventually shrink. There is radiation at the center of the universe left to support this theory Gravity has infinite distance, no matter how minute... Check out this law of physics...A body continues in its state of constant velocity unless it is acted upon by an external force. The glalxies are in a constant state of motion out-wards, and the external force is gravity. About your bowl theory, that is only possible if objects have an orbit, and to have an orbit there would have to be an object in the middle with great enough gravity to hold it in orbit, dont get me wrong tho, the gravity would still have an effect on objects even if they were moving too fast to enter orbit. So, the universe isnt like marbles in a bowl, its more like blowing up a balloon, it's expanding in all directions. Also, as they are expanding, we only see red-shift, that means all the galaxies are moving away from eachother, getting farther apart... but the speed at witch they are moving apart is slowing down, due to gravity, the the Doppler effect can prove that. GRRRRR. OVER TIME the force exerted by gravity is causing the slow-down of the expansion, the change from red-shift to blueshift... Kinda like when you up in the air and running in AW, it takes you a little time to slow down and stop then go backward, maybe a second in AW, but trillions of years in the universe... > > and to have an orbit there would have to be an object in the middle with > great enough gravity to hold it in orbit, dont get me wrong tho, the gravity > would still have an effect on objects even if they were moving too fast to > enter orbit. > > No, objects can move without an orbit around something. As the > universe expands, the matter inside it expands as well. well the marbles in the bowl in no way can represent the expanding of the universe becuase the galaxies arent going around in a circle or even a spiral, so there would be no random movement like you show in the bowl, the galaxies are moving in a straight line... outwards, untill gravity pulls them back in. > > galaxies are moving away from eachother, getting farther apart... but the > speed at witch they are moving apart is slowing down, due to gravity, the > the Doppler effect can prove that. > > No, it's slowing down because other things are acting upon them. As galaxies get closer, > because they have so much mass, they act upon each other and get closer. > But this doesn't mean the universe is collapsing just yet. Did i say the universe was collapsing yet? magnetic fields have a finite reach... any internal force cant excert a force externally, kinda like trying to lift a chair without touching the ground while your standing on it... gravity is an external force, it is infinite in distance so, the galaxy at the otherside of this universe is also exerting a force on me, tho it is probably even more minute than your hands. > > --Bowen-- > > > FREE OBJECT FOR WORLD OWNERSJan 10, 2002, 1:24am
